"Mark Darrah's A Catalogue of Common People is anything but common itself. It is an extraordinary collection of beautifully constructed, thoughtful essays that resonant with humor, insight, and compassion. If there is such a thing as a collective voice for the dreams and misgivings we all share, then Darrah has captured it with eloquence." ~Teresa Miller, author of Remnants of Glory. "Do not let the title fool you-A Catalogue of Common People is an uncommonly good book. Written by Mark Darrah in plainspoken yet compelling prose, these are the stories of people we all know and others we hope to meet. But beware! This book is as seductive as grandma's peanut brittle. Once you start reading, you won't stop. Take it from someone who knows and now craves a second helping." ~Michael Wallis, Best-selling author "Rich with insight and nostalgia, shot through with a kind of exquisite melancholia, and filled to the brim with an optimism that never fails to renew itself-even against long odds-Mark Darrah's A Catalogue of Common People stays with you long after the last page is turned. To call it a celebration of the commonplace would be doing it a disservice; there's far more than a celebration going on here, and none of it is commonplace. Taken together, these wonderful little vignettes add up to something greater: an exploration of what it means to be a thinking and feeling human being in 21st Century America." ~John Wooley, author of Shot in Oklahoma: A Century of Sooner State Cinema and popular host of "Swing on This," a radio show celebrating the legacy of western swing.

I will write this review with bias. The author is an old and good friend of mine. Many of the stories I first heard years ago. In a few, I passed through them. These are mostly true in fact and absolutely true in perception.Mark Darrah assimilates what he sees and hears in a very special way. With his word craft he binds diverse bits of truth into an image, a collage better than its parts. I read the book cover to cover in one sitting. It is a great read!

Delectable Morsels of Human Experience Dished Up by an Uncommon Author By Julie Saeger Nierenberg I've been an ardent fan of Darrah's essays for many years. As a privileged subscriber to his "Tortoise Tracts," I have eagerly awaited each new juicy morsel, knowing it would be an insightful, thought-provoking and often deeply touching text. Now, in "A Catalogue of Common People," we have a collection of Mark's best to read as often as we like. The book is perfect to revisit and quench my thirst for the common people stories that resonate so well. Mark is an uncommon author and I commend him for taking the perfect ingredients from his abundant writing pantry and creating a menu that stirs and delights. If you are reading this, Mark, know that I'm ready for more.

At their best, such as the essays when he discusses his father, they are like Marilyn Robinson’s novels Gilead and Lila, and other times they are like sitting on the front porch with Andy Taylor, hearing thoughtful yarns about life, the past, love, and pain. Throughout, the writing is quite fine, in particular the essay “Never As It Appears,” where his descriptions reveal the landscape through detail and the arresting arrangement of words. As stated, the several essays about his father are particularly vibrant with detail and feeling, but even when he is discussing an archeological dig in Colorado or how an old friend Wayne got girls to like him by simply listening, Darrah connects to larger themes of living. Good stuff.
