Bunker Behind the awkward wording of this book's title is an excellent volume of scholarly critiques and analyses of a host of science fiction films. Regarding that (in my opinion) ill-advised title, what it means is "Science Fiction Film Which is Endangering," with "Endangering" in turn being used to mean challenging, thought-provoking, and just plain interesting. In the two editors' various section-introductions through the book they keep awkwardly shoehorning the word "[en]danger[ing]" into their text, to the point that I wanted to quote The Princes Bride at them: "You keep using that word..."Moving on to the content of the book, it's a collection of articles by various authors, most of them professors of film studies or related fields. As with all such books, I found some of the articles more rewarding than others, but overall I was impressed with the quality of the volume. A few of the chapters were a bit too thick with scholarly jargon for my pedestrian education to keep up with, and there were others that tried to make points that I didn't find convincing or well-argued, or were on topics I didn't find interesting. But all of these flaws were the exception rather than the rule, to my eye.Among my favorites were Alan Woolfolk's chapter (whose intimidatingly jargonistic title I won't repeat). Among other interesting points, Woolfolk compares the initial efforts to aid the alien "prawns" depicted in District 9 with "the official humanitarian efforts that have become all too familiar in the contemporary world in which such efforts begin with good intentions and end with moral exhaustion and disgust." He goes on to draw some thought-provoking parallels between District 9 and Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness and Hannah Arendt's classic study of Nazism, Eichmann in Jerusalem.Other excellent articles include Sherryl Vint's compare-and-contrast of the movies World War Z and Monsters, in which she discusses the sharply divergent political subtexts of the two films, and a piece by Scott Wilson that takes an incisive look at the recurring themes in David Cronenberg's films. There were many other fine articles out of the book's 19 chapters, covering a broad range of topics and quite a few (mostly recent) SF films.A point of interest one often finds in books like this one is that scholarly skills don't always coincide with nerd skills. Thus, for example, no less than two of this volume's articles manage to misquote Roy Batty's "Tears in rain" speech from Blade Runner. One simply flubs the wording, while another mistakenly uses a version of the monologue that appeared only in a leaked shooting script. This may seem like a mind-boggling goof to those of us who have a nerdily detailed knowledge of SF films, but really it isn't. Again, scholarly skills don't always coincide with nerd skills, and there's a difference between being able to extract interesting insights and depths of meaning from a film and being able to spot trivial errors in quoted passages. For my money, the former expertise is far more worthwhile.If you have an interest in science fiction film that goes beyond surface-level entertainment, and if you want to take a look at the sorts of thoughts and insights that have been gleaned from such films by some leading scholars, I think you'll find this book a deeply interesting, educational, and rewarding read.Full disclosure: I received a copy of this book in return for a review.

3 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Great book for a lot of recent college grads By bingo This is a subject that really resonates with a lot of college graduates today. Great to have a story by someone who has actually lived this experience -- and found her way to a life choice and possible career by being tough enough to plunge in, change course, and take some chances. The message seems to be: Fill out your own space, don't worry too much, get busy and do whatever looks like the best option at the time, and, possibly, have a good laugh about the awfullest parts of it when you finally land on your feet in a place you are happy to be with your life. Good thoughts for anybody, in fact.

The parallel world we find the main character living in is strange to say the least. Every person in the world is on a master list and the people at the top of the list often find themselves having to redistribute their wealth. And by redistribute I mean people at or near the bottom of the list can enter the top peoples homes and help themselves to their stuff. (quite legally) The main character, a self proclaimed modern Adonis, seeks out a doctor to write him a sick note that would allow him to take off half a year from work. With note in hand he convinces his boss that the note is real and within two days of being off of work he is jailed. This book is silly and fun to read. The imagination of the author is like no other and will take you on the ride of your life.

Weird and Wonderful By Kevin Lintner When the main character of a book is known as "Goof," you should have a pretty good idea of what kind of story you are in for. "A Prison For Bozos" has every element that a good Bizarro story should have, unusual characters in unusual situations, an alternate reality, and enough humor and satire to fill at least two full length novels. Goof Gilbert is a slacker with dozens upon dozens of get-rich-quick schemes that he just knows will work, but his day job keeps getting in the way. So Goof cracks yet another scheme, and that is to get a doctor's note excusing him from work for eighteen months so he can concentrate on getting rich and not needing a job. Not long after he manages to get a note, he winds up in trouble with the law and gets sentenced to the Free-Will Annex. "A Prison For Bozos" is written in a very stream-of-consciousness style that is part slapstick, social commentary, and sometimes just plain weird. I loved it.

For the madly complacent among us… By TFLReader Who hasn't expended more energy trying to get out of going to work than they would have used if they had actually just gone to work and done their job in the first place? I know I'm guilty. This is the absurdity and hilarity of the situations that character Goof Gilbert gets himself into doing just that in "Prison for Bozos". A delightful read about a man who finagles 6 months free from work, only to find himself locked up within days. If you enjoy irony and comedic writing, this is a must read.

This is a book about having FUN with words. And if you’re wondering why that word is in capital letters, all will become clear.

And it’s a very particular form of fun with words: one that involves jumbling and tumbling them into eye-pleasingly symmetrical patterns and making riddles, jokes, and poetry in the form of crossword clues. A love of crosswords is also a love of language—albeit a love that enjoys seeing the object of its affections toyed with, tickled, and flipped upside down.

Crossword puzzles are a silly, playful way of taking English and making it into a game. They have been doing so since December 21, 1913, when the world’s first crossword appeared—although lovers of language had been deriving pleasure from wordplay long before then, of course. However, it was the crossword that came to supersede all other puzzles. It has become a cornerstone of almost all newspapers and, for many, a fondly anticipated daily appointment.

The crossword today looks quite different than that first puzzle—or that should perhaps read “crosswords today” so as to encompass the baroque creations seen in Sunday papers, the strange mutant British form known as the cryptic, and all of the themed and jokey variants on offer on any given day.

What they have in common is the pleasure of identifying what the constructor is asking for and seeing the answers mesh with one another until the puzzle is finished. For a century, the worker has whiled away journeys and parents have passed on tips and tricks in the hope that each grid tackled will be correctly filled.

In The Crossword Century, we’ll be looking at the playfulness, the humor, and the frustration of the crossword in all its forms, and how the world of the puzzle has overlapped with espionage and humor, current affairs and literature. We’ll see fictional crossword encounters, from The West Wing to The Simpsons, and we’ll see crosswords from the real world: the one that seemed to predict the outcome of a presidential election and the ones that appeared to be giving away the secrets of the Second World War.

We’ll look at how clues tantalize those who are addicted to puzzles by sending the solver on wild-goose chases, by being sweetly silly and soberly serious, and by stubbornly withholding their real meanings until the penny drops.

And we ask questions about the experience of solving: Why do some people try to finish crosswords as quickly as possible? Can computers crack clues? And does puzzling really stave off dementia?

As for how to read this book, please feel free to treat it like a puzzle. That is to say, you can start at 1 across and work sequentially, or you can dive in and out and follow your instincts. The chapters are in two sections: The ACROSS entries look at the creation of puzzles and the strange things that can go on within clues and grids, while the DOWNs describe what happens to the crossword once it escapes into the world and meets its solvers.

Like the British man who created the first crossword in New York, we’ll be crossing the Atlantic Ocean—a few times, in fact—and I humbly hope that along the way I might persuade you that the baffling-looking British cryptic is a lot more enjoyable than legend has it.

How the crossword first appeared in 1913 and became an overnight sensation in 1924

Newsday’s crossword editor puts it best. “Liverpool’s two greatest gifts to the world of popular culture,” writes Stanley Newman, “are the Beatles and Arthur Wynne.”

The comparison with the Beatles is on the money—or, to use a more British locution, spot-on. Like the music of the Fab Four, the crossword is a global phenomenon that is at once American and British. But while the Beatles are known wherever recorded music is played, Arthur Wynne’s name remains unspoken by almost all. Who was he?

Well, he wasn’t the Lennon or the McCartney of crosswords; we’ll meet them soon enough. He was perhaps crosswords’ Fats Domino: a pioneer who would see his innovation taken by others to strange, often baroque mutant forms and variants.

Not that this was how Wynne saw his career playing out when he became one of the forty million people who emigrated from Europe between 1830 and 1930, and one of the nine million heading from Liverpool for the New World during that same period.

The son of the editor of The Liverpool Mercury, Wynne was—at least initially, and in his own mind—a journalist. He spent most of his newspaper career working for the empire of print mogul William Randolph Hearst. His legacy, though, was not a piece of reporting, and it appeared in the New York World, a Democrat-supporting daily published by Hearst’s rival, Joseph Pulitzer.

As a kind of precursor to the New York Post, The World mixed sensation with investigation, and it was Wynne’s job to add puzzles to the jokes and cartoons for “Fun,” the Sunday magazine section. He had messed around with tried-and-tested formats: word searches, mazes, anagrams, rebuses.

Some of my best memories of spending time with my dad is passing a weekend newspaper crosswords puzzle back and forth with a leaky inky ballpoint pen, so I had looked forward eagerly to receiving this book as a kind of resource compendium.Unfortunately, this is a retrospective, overly cheerful sort of Wikipedia article in a book form. Though, yes, there are some tidbits of useful info (i.e. I knew what the concept of 'ninas' were, but not what they were formally called; that Sondheim, Sinatra, and Fry are all avid crossword fans; information about wartime codebreakers), it comes off as trying too hard and more of a punny eyeroller than a non-fiction book you'd want to read more than once.

Outrage gives you a sentiment being in control, strangy. It advises others to regard your limits, which despite everything I accept is fundamental now and again. However incessant annoyance is an alternate thing. It just makes you a hopeless individual. There are numerous sorts of indignation. I didn't know until I read this book. I am liable of 'aloof outrage' and the book depicted it precisely. By Ciel Sebastian Geniston We sometimes can't control ourselves of the things that are happening in our life and we admit it or not we sometimes response to it the wrong way. Like anger, we sometimes put it on the wrong way which can cause much trouble to us. This isn't new to me because I most of the time burst out in anger whenever something's not right is happening to my day to day life. I know this can be change by knowing on how to deal with my own self. To think of the outcome before bursting out my emotions. It is not easy but I know I can do it anytime soon. It's always nice to make some changes in our lives especially if it's for the betterment of everyone around us. I will definitely recommend this book. Many lessons to learn from.

Efficient and Effective By Belinda Irwin I have anger issues and I don't want to undergo anger management classes or be part of a support group or something. It's just not my thing. So I grabbed this book to help me overcome this issue.The book was written in a very approachable manner that it felt like I was just talking to a very close friend. It felt like Ted truly understands what I am going through. His points are spot-on and his advice are both efficient and effective. Been following them consistently and me and my family are seeing a gradual change in my mood and I don't get easily angered or annoyed as much as I was before but I still have it. This is way, way better than going into a class or support group.

21 of 21 people found the following review helpful. Mr. Teardrop Gets the Treatment He Deserves By Ernie McHone Marty Robbins is one of the greatest and most talented singer/songwriters of all time. I really began listening to Marty's music about three years ago. I was born a little less than two years after Marty's untimely death, therefore, I wasn't really exposed to a lot of his music. I was aware through television and radio of songs like "El Paso" and "Devil Woman" but had never taken the time to really listen.I purchased one of his greatest hits CDs here on Amazon, and needless to say, I was truly impressed at how talented and versatile this man was. He was crossing over into the pop charts way before anyone else was with songs like "A White Sport Coat" and the above mentioned "El Paso". I recently watched an interview with Marty Robbins where he stated that he never really arranged many songs in a country style. That seems to be just where people wanted to place him. But Marty Robbins was beyond a country and western singer. He was a singer period. Just take a listen to the album "Marty after Midnight". It is pure jazz greatness and is just a slice of this man's vocal prowess.I had scoured the internet after being introduced to Marty for anything I could find on him. After buying the CD, I soon bought the "Essential" CD collection as well as the "Legendary Performances" and "Marty Robbins Anthology" DVDs. I must say he has become my all time favorite vocalist. While searching the internet for Marty stuff, my goal was to find a biography about the man. Sadly, my search came up short as the only thing available was the large bibliography "Marty Robbins: Fast Cars and Country Music" and "Some Memories: Growing up with Marty Robbins" which was a book co-written by Marty's twin sister before she passed. This wasn't enough for me, as I wanted a volume dedicated to the man's life. A definitive biography of this legendary entertainer.Diane Diekman has done just that. She has crafted one of the best biographies out there. This book is exhaustive and covers every aspect of Marty Robbins life. From his birth in Arizona to his untimely death at the age of 57 in Nashville, Tn. It is filled with recollections from his children, his siblings, peers, band members and Marty himself. This book leaves no stone unturned and gives you an overall picture of Marty without pulling any punches.Mr. Teardrop deserves this biography and so do his fans. I highly recommend this book and cannot put it down.

A Great Picture of Marty Robbin's Life By Gary Presley I share membership in a writing critique group with Diane, and I know firsthand how much hard work, dedication, and insight she has brought to this biography. Diane's knowledge is rooted in the fact she is a fan, a person who saw Robbins perform several times. Diane is the type of writer who researches, interviews friends and family to get all sides of her subject, and then sticks to the facts. Don't expect a modern psycho-biography, but a fan will learn much about Robbins and what made him the man and performer the public saw on stage. The biography begins with Marty's rough-and-tumble childhood in Arizona and then follows him through his service in World War II, where he saw combat in the South Pacific. The chapters about his career, his family life, and his racing in NASCAR wind up the story. Robbins was a natural artist, and his story deserved an author like Diane, one who is both a skillful writer and a knowledgeable music enthusiast.

Like any other project author Diane Diekman produces, the material she presents comes from countless hours of research and interviews. She doesn't take 'I don't remember' for an answer. Diane digs till she gets the information she's looking for. Through her diligence, we are rewarded with an all-access pass with the late Marty Robbins from the people who knew him best. Diane leads you on a journey through detailed accounts and photos from his boyhood antics through to his many accomplishments both in the music industry and on the racetrack. Not only will you see a side of Marty Robbins only those closest to him ever saw, but you get a glimpse of what life in Nashville was like in it's early days and the role he played in helping others on their way up. Whether you are a fan of classic country, Nascar or the man, this book on the legendary Marty Robbins belongs in your collection.

I used it for studing for my PET Certification and it was by far the most helpful book. The questions at the end of each chapter were also very helpful. I have recommended this book to every PET and nuclear medicine tech I meet.
