By Amazon Customer The author has taken the means to write a good book and broken it down into 5 separate very short books. Is this to make more money because we are teased by the first book then have to buy the others. Put it all into one book start to finish

By Teri Hicks This is one of the first books I have read from this writer and I thought it was pretty good but I would have liked it more as a novella one that supplies background. The writing was good and I like the character development even the storyline was good but it just ended with no resolution. That was a bummer. Will I read more? It's possible, but I hope book two doesn't end in the same manner.

Facts plus informed opinion By Rico I have four college guides (Fiske, Tanabe's America's Best Colleges, Princeton Review's Best 380, and the Insider's Guide), plus I subscribe to the US News college rankings. Each resource has its strengths, but the Fiske Guide to Colleges is the one I reach for first when I want to look up a school. Instead of just putting statistics in narrative form, or quoting students who have little basis for comparison, Fiske places each college in context and delineates the school's distinguishing features. For each entry, Fiske gives a list of "overlaps," competing colleges that share the same applicants, which is helpful information during the discovery phase of a college search. Fiske opens each college's entry with a summary paragraph that seeks to distill the unique essence of the college, often by differentiating it from its peer institutions. There are many places where you can get the bare facts about a college, but Fiske gives you an informed opinion that is much more valuable.

It really only has a small number of schools in here. The write ups are great, so if you are looking for a selective college (and I use that term loosely) or the biggest public college in each state this book is for you. I was shocked they had 1 of the University of Wisconsin colleges, 2 of the Michigan public universities. The same thing can be said about many other states. It seems to be geared more towards private schools. A few people have read how they "supposedly" chose their schools, but left scratching their heads too.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. MUST HAVE By Amazon Customer The Fiske Guide to Colleges never fails me each year. It's the best college guide book out there. The information is valuable, insightful, and useful. You can't do the college search without it.

What is success? What does it mean? How is it that we all look for this thing we call "success" while each having our own idea about what it could be? Is there one definition for success? And why does the dictionary get it wrong? Find out in Climbing Maya.

Each person must find success on their own, of course. It's either that or remain unfulfilled. Nobody tells us what it is or how to find it or even what to look for; we're just told that it's what we're supposed to be. Common ideas about success include money, fame, power, and belongings - but those are all ultimately meaningless in the face of mortality. As it turns out, "success" isn't a thing we acquire or a place where we go. It's not a job or a family or any one thing. It is all of these things, and when you find what they all have in common the way to success opens before you.

Success casts its great shadow, like the shadow of some unscalable mountain, across our lives. We know it's "up there". But what does it mean to go "up there"? Where is the map that shows us the way? Climbing Maya was my way of finding the answer to this question of success, my way of defining the term and laying out a map to the goal.

As a philosophical memoir, Climbing Maya exposes the listener to ideas about success in the works of Plato and Aristotle, optimality theory and Buddhism, Kundalini Yoga, Maslow, and much more as I search for the final answer. Because success, as it turns out, is not about being rich or having it all. It's about finding that place in your life where you can breathe free, understand yourself, and take that next step toward becoming who you want to be.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. It takes you into the author's mind and world during a period of life that is filled with joy, sorrow By Sharon L. Hulbert Climbing Maya purports to be an exploration of how to define success, but it is much more. It is the story of life with all its bumps and bruises interwoven into a study of success. It takes you into the author's mind and world during a period of life that is filled with joy, sorrow, pain, self doubt and searching. In other words, life. At times, I wanted to smack the author up side the head and yell enough of this already. It is the same reaction I had to a college philosophy class that spent two days discussing whether a tree made a noise in the woods when no one was around and the meaning of Descartes "I think, therefore I am". I quit before the third class, but I did not quit reading this book because it caused me to think and I cared about what was happening around the edges and in the middle of the philosophical discussions. This is ultimately a book about staying the course, getting through the tough times and learning who you are and what keeps you moving forward towards that elusive goal we call success. Read it and you might just find your own meaning of success.

Since I've long wondered myself, I eagerly joined the search along with Ken La Salle as he quested for this holy grail. As with most things in life, it turns out there is or was no magical solution. For the author success is revealed as happiness, eventually; from this reader's perspective perhaps because he finally admitted his own truth and began to realize same. He's a writer - a damned fine one, at that - and he should write because writing makes him happy. It's probably more than that, of course, but I envy him just the same. I still have yet to figure out what my truth is, so I guess I'm still climbing. Even so, seeing Climbing Maya as a depiction of the journey to success, which in itself can be a success sometimes, made for a thought-provoking read.

Very easy to read and understand. It leaves you with a burning desire to debate with the author.Success is one of those terms that mean something different to everyone. It can be fleeting and lifelong. It raises more questions of what success is.This is the fourth book I've read from this author, each one so very different and yet all enjoyable and fast reading.Worth the read!"

Can you live a beautiful life while living with Lupus? Incurable and unpredictable, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, or Lupus, is an autoimmune disease known for its difficulty to treat and its penchant for disrupting lives. A Lupus patient can be stable one day and suffering in the hospital from a full-blown “flare” of the disease the next. For the over 1.5 million Americans living with the disease, the toll it takes is enormous. Living a life filled with fear, uncertainty, and strong medications, finding peace in this all-too-often stormy life with Lupus can be daunting—even in the mildest of cases. But with the habits and rituals of the Live a Beautiful Life with Lupus framework, a path to a better quality of life is possible. Written by Olivia Davenport, a Lupus patient herself, this book was borne out of years of debilitating episodes of illness and medical emergencies. In her desperation to find a way to truly live, she researched, queried, and conferred with her doctors and other practitioners to develop a systematic way to take care of herself holistically—body, mind, and spirit. Her approach is the reason she can say, “Yes, you can live a beautiful life with Lupus!”

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. It helped ease my mind and gave me a plan of action. By Vegas Valley Gal I highly recommend this book. A friend gave this book to me and I found myself wishing that I could have had it when I was diagnosed. So many emotions overwhelmed me, what is lupus? How badly will I be affected? What will my life be like now? Finally, and most frightening of all, how long will that life be? What I wanted was a short, informative volume that would let me “hit the ground running” as I learned to accept my diagnosis. What I found were books with hundreds of pages and lots of symptoms and terminology but not much of a human touch. This book provided a wealth of information in a small concise volume. For those of you who are just beginning your Lupus journey, there are myriads of books out there but few that educate, uplift and provide a plan of action like this one. Ms. Davenport’s book concentrates on Systemic Lupus but much of her advice and coping strategies could be applied to anyone living with any autoimmune disease. Live a Beautiful Life with Lupus is divided into 3 sections: Part I, which defines the author’s concept of living a beautiful life, Part 2 how Lupus affects your body, and Part 3, living a beautiful life with Lupus. So much of coping with life’s vagaries depends upon one’s attitude and Ms. Davenport’s book is built around maintaining the best outlook possible regardless of what the disease throws at you. The last part of the book lists resources (both physical and spiritual, though the book is nondenominational) that will help the reader gather more information about how to live with your new reality. If you are the friend/loved one of someone who has Lupus this is also an excellent book for you to read. It’s short enough so that you won’t lose interest and will help you help your “Lupie” as some people with Lupus refer to themselves, stay positive. If you never read another book on Lupus or if you go on to collect dozens, this book would be a valuable addition to your library that you’ll find yourself consulting again and again.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful read! By D. Hayes As a family member of a person diagnosed with Lupus, this book has provided me with extremely useful insight on the challenges of, as well as the tools for, managing the illness. When starting the book my goal was to obtain some general tips that would help prepare me to discuss coping methods. Upon completing the book, I realized I had received a lovely gift that met this goal and so much more. Ms. Davenport’s clear and unpretentious style of writing has increased my understanding of Lupus, and maybe more importantly, has opened my mind to the power of a positive attitude and approach. The structure and writing style make the book easy to understand and quite beautifully and simply lay out useful strategies that address all aspects of one’s life. Additionally, the resources provided toward the end of the book are invaluable. If you are living with Lupus, have a loved one living with Lupus or simply want insight on how a positive attitude can make a significant difference in living with a chronic illness, I suggest you read this book!

By Winston A funny, genuine, and raw look into parenting three little kids, including stories that range from self-help guidelines for keeping parental sanity to Dr. Seuss like poems written from a very special point of view where the parent meets the child. Sam's original point of view and fearlessness about telling the truth about raising her three little wild and lovable monsters makes for a hilarious and endearing read.

Sam pours out her vulnerable, creative, funny soul on these pages as she negotiates through her new role of motherhood. Her warped sense of comedy gives voices to the three deranged foreigners who have come to populate her home (and to their toys too)! Funny, bright, will bring a smile to all parents!

By Emm Kay Well done Sam!!Don't really know how you managed to juggle being a Super-Mom with being a Super-Wife and a Super-Writer... but you did it!As a mom of two lively-forever-war-mongering munchkins many moons ago I was chuckingly put in a time-machine to the past for several of the stories in the book... thanks for that! We tend to gloss over those moments where mainly love and our good upbringing prevented us from being thrown in the nick for happily strangling our own offspring! This obviously very much-tongue-in-cheek; although there had been, being honest, moments where I doubted my own sanity when they were "at it again"... hehehe!I love your writing style...I love your sense of humour..I love the short, easily manageable chapters...The whole package allows me to be the silent chuckling observer, secretly partaking in your anything-but-boring family life..You clearly wrote the book with the words pouring from your heart... and the message comes through, loud and clear.Your love and passion for life and love and family simply shine through the pages...Thanks for the jolly -and at times more thoughtful- roller coaster ride... your falling-in-love with your husband story is quite poignant in that respect!I look forward to the next instalment with much impatience!Emm :) :)

This book is not for you if you can't take the heartbreak of things like: A tornado that runs off with a farmer's daughter (before finishing harvesting the corn!). A group of bears being scammed into thinking they're going to another planet in hyper sleep chambers (when they're not). The pathetic sight of snake boxing. A tree murdering another tree "in cold chlorophyll." A Neanderthal who never marries after witnessing a spit paint incident between another guy and his wife (in public). A depressed sock that turns to drinking fabric softener (due to his recent separation). If you can handle the tragedies like those listed above then you should be able to handle the rest of the cartoons in this collection that are less tragic, like: Some guy double bogeying the entrance of a black hole. Hum Dum having a great fall off the Great Wall. The introduction of the fly strip tie into the fashion world. At any rate, if you like depressing things, you'll like this book.

The humor ranges from the quick, easy laugh to the cerebral, with the occassional brain-teaser thrown in as well. Recommended for the young cartoon enthusiast to the jaded adult, there is something here for anyone who wants a quick laugh that sticks with you throughout the day.

Totally awesome humor that pretty much embodies every newsletter ever, with witty insights and, to be honest, some clever advice where you wouldn't expect it. Basically, here's your remedy for internet stupidity, and a much needed remedy it is. My mood is tons lights. Next time I need a break from the F-Book, I'm picking this one back up HA!

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Antidote to catalogs and blogs By Convoke I really needed this book about now. A giggle-worthy send up of catalogs and blogs? Oh, yes. But more -- a commentary on the great whole-earth vaudeville show now taking place before our watering eyes. An antidote to the blither infecting the internet. Read it and feel sanity return. You're not alone. Dexter Poin is out there, too...
