What is success? What does it mean? How is it that we all look for this thing we call "success" while each having our own idea about what it could be? Is there one definition for success? And why does the dictionary get it wrong? Find out in Climbing Maya.

Each person must find success on their own, of course. It's either that or remain unfulfilled. Nobody tells us what it is or how to find it or even what to look for; we're just told that it's what we're supposed to be. Common ideas about success include money, fame, power, and belongings - but those are all ultimately meaningless in the face of mortality. As it turns out, "success" isn't a thing we acquire or a place where we go. It's not a job or a family or any one thing. It is all of these things, and when you find what they all have in common the way to success opens before you.

Success casts its great shadow, like the shadow of some unscalable mountain, across our lives. We know it's "up there". But what does it mean to go "up there"? Where is the map that shows us the way? Climbing Maya was my way of finding the answer to this question of success, my way of defining the term and laying out a map to the goal.

As a philosophical memoir, Climbing Maya exposes the listener to ideas about success in the works of Plato and Aristotle, optimality theory and Buddhism, Kundalini Yoga, Maslow, and much more as I search for the final answer. Because success, as it turns out, is not about being rich or having it all. It's about finding that place in your life where you can breathe free, understand yourself, and take that next step toward becoming who you want to be.

Hulbert Climbing Maya purports to be an exploration of how to define success, but it is much more. It is the story of life with all its bumps and bruises interwoven into a study of success. It takes you into the author's mind and world during a period of life that is filled with joy, sorrow, pain, self doubt and searching. In other words, life. At times, I wanted to smack the author up side the head and yell enough of this already. It is the same reaction I had to a college philosophy class that spent two days discussing whether a tree made a noise in the woods when no one was around and the meaning of Descartes "I think, therefore I am". I quit before the third class, but I did not quit reading this book because it caused me to think and I cared about what was happening around the edges and in the middle of the philosophical discussions. This is ultimately a book about staying the course, getting through the tough times and learning who you are and what keeps you moving forward towards that elusive goal we call success. Read it and you might just find your own meaning of success.

Since I've long wondered myself, I eagerly joined the search along with Ken La Salle as he quested for this holy grail. As with most things in life, it turns out there is or was no magical solution. For the author success is revealed as happiness, eventually; from this reader's perspective perhaps because he finally admitted his own truth and began to realize same. He's a writer - a damned fine one, at that - and he should write because writing makes him happy. It's probably more than that, of course, but I envy him just the same. I still have yet to figure out what my truth is, so I guess I'm still climbing. Even so, seeing Climbing Maya as a depiction of the journey to success, which in itself can be a success sometimes, made for a thought-provoking read.

Very easy to read and understand. It leaves you with a burning desire to debate with the author.Success is one of those terms that mean something different to everyone. It can be fleeting and lifelong. It raises more questions of what success is.This is the fourth book I've read from this author, each one so very different and yet all enjoyable and fast reading.Worth the read!"
