Women often think that their risk of getting Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS) or Invasive Breast Cancer (IBC) is much higher than real numbers show. This fear is often fed by new stories about research, and sometimes by their own doctors. Many doctors and researchers say that DCIS is not Invasive Breast Cancer (IBC) because it stays in the breast duct. HOWEVER... DCIS is also called Stage 0 breast cancer, and is treated as if it were IBC. There are many dilemmas about DCIS, and this book tries to clear them up. We know how easy it is to end up more confused after looking at different websites, books, and research results. We present a new way to approach DCIS that combines the latest research with practical information. Even though we state things plainly, many scientific resources and references were used to make sure this book is accurate. Please be aware that those resources may use older language that we are learning is not accurate for DCIS. For example, DCIS lesions do not have the ability to "recur," even though this term is commonly used by many scientists and doctors. You will learn about DCIS and how it fits into breast diseases, including breast cancer. The process of getting diagnosed is also explained, as are the different types of treatments that are commonly given for DCIS. Risks are also explained clearly. This includes the risk of being diagnosed with DCIS, as well as the risk of getting another DCIS or a future Invasive Breast Cancer. This book also highlights the various kinds of ongoing research for DCIS. A list of terms, and additional resources and references are also included to help you find more detailed information. We hope this book offers useful information to help you make decisions about DCIS, and look forward to hearing how you use it! Deborah Collyar (1st author): Deborah Collyar was breaking glass ceilings in a computer company when she found a lump at age 32. A mastectomy, chemotherapy, radiation, and chemo-induced menopause produced a new outlook on career and life, especially after delivering a healthy baby in 1993. Ductal Carcinoma in Situ (DCIS), another breast cancer, and husband Bob's lung cancer sent them blazing new trails by injecting patients directly into the research process, from policies, idea generation and grant proposals, to development, clinical trials, and delivering 'better results to people faster. Philippe Gascard (2nd author): Over the last 30 years, Dr. Philippe Gascard has built a solid background in protein and lipid chemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, systems biology and epigenetics. Over the past 10 years, Dr. Gascard has gained extensive expertise in breast cancer biology with an emphasis on epigenetics, biomarker discovery and multiplex immunohistochemistry. An active participant of the Integrative Cancer Biology Program (ICBP), he was the Director of the Central Pathology Laboratory for the UCSF Roadmap Epigenetics Mapping Consortium (REMC) from 2008 to 2014. As researcher and project manager in Dr. Tlsty's laboratory since 2008, he has been closely involved in the writing and scientific conceptualization of multiple grant applications, including a recently funded award aimed at identifying new biomarkers for prediction of outcome in patients diagnosed with DCIS. Thea Tlsty (3rd author): Dr. Thea Tlsty has over 25 years of experience studying human cells and the earliest steps of malignancy. The model systems she developed contribute to clinical utility by identifying molecular stromal-epithelial interactions that facilitate tumor progression in the breast and prostate. These analyses have led her to identify consequences of epithelial stress that lead to the activation of pro-tumorigenic tissue phenotypes that helps activate a multicellular stromal program shared by high mammographic density and tumor tissues.

I have been passionately researching this topic for 6 years due to a DCIS diagnosis which I feel I was mis-treated and over-treated for. After a two year journey and 3 surgeries, I said NO MORE! I created two websites (DCIS 411 and DCIS Redefined) to help women diagnosed with DCIS take more time to understand what DCIS is and to find support and resources for integrative solutions and "active surveillance." There is so little information and support out there for women seeking a less aggressive approach to DCIS so I greatly appreciate the very intensive research that the authors have put into this comprehensive book discussing a difficult and controversial topic. It is such a complicated and confusing diagnosis and far too many women are rushed into very drastic life-altering treatments -- often times in a panic. There is now solid research showing a great deal of the "standard of care" treatments are unnecessary -- and there is great harm being done to women. This book brings many of these controversies to light. The issue of DCIS over-treatment made international news in 2015 with a large study that came out stating that there was no survival benefit to any of the current standard of care treatments., Many doctors are not fully informing their patients of the potential risks and harms of mammograms -- one of which is a diagnosis of DCIS -- which opens to the can of worms and dilemmas this book discusses. Too many women are being needlessly harmed with very drastic treatments (as if they have invasive cancer). This needs to be investigated further so that women can make healthier, more common-sense decisions that are truly in their best interest based on their individual pathology and true risk assessment and not just based in fear and one-size-fits-all radical treatments. It's time women become informed and empowered regarding mammograms, DCIS and breast cancer prevention and risk reduction. This book is an excellent resource for any woman who is getting screening mammograms due to the high rate of false positives and suspicious calcifications that may lead to biopsies and the terrible dilemmas associated with a DCIS diagnosis.

Fewer diagnoses provide such a wide range of available treatments. This book very carefully and clearly lays out the questions that those individuals with the DCIS diagnosis confront. The DCIS Dilemmas provides the information to help those have been diagnosed with DCIS make an informed decision about how they want to proceed. As someone who co-facilitates a support group for DCIS, I continually see women struggle and agonize over what they should do. The two biggest issues that bring women to the group are fear of recurrence and how much treatment is necessary. For them the likelihood of recurrence gets buried in statistical manipulation and the suggested DCIS treatment plan often resembles that of someone with far more advanced breast cancer. So often I hear women say their doctors tell them what they should do without letting them know about their options. I personally know that with knowledge and information about breast cancer comes empowerment. It helped me alleviate fear and make educated, not emotional decisions. This is a must read. I have recommended this book to those who attended the group in the past as well as the current members. Each of us that have had this diagnosis needs to know more.

The Rise and Fall of Alternative Rock in the Nineties In 1990 alternative music was where it belonged - underground. It left the business of rock stardom to rock stars. But by 1992 alternative rock had spawned a revolution in music and style that transformed youth culture and revived a moribund music industry. Five years later, alternative rock was over, leaving behind a handful of dead heroes, a few dozen masterpieces, and a lot more questions than answers. What, if anything, had the alternative revolution meant? And had it been possible - as so many of its heroes had insisted - for it to be both on MtV and under the radar? Had it used the machinery of corporate rock to destroy corporate rock? In ENtERtAIN US! Craig Schuftan takes you on a journey through the nineties - from Sonic Youth's 'Kool thing' to Radiohead's 'Kid A', NEVERMIND to ODELAY, Madchester to Nu-Metal, Lollapalooza to Woodstock '99 - narrated in the voices of the decade's most important artists. this is the story of alternative rock - the people who made it, the people who loved it, the industry that bought and sold it, and the culture that grew up in its wake - in the last decade of the twentieth century.

Being a kid of the 90’s but not old enough to seek out or grasp the behind the scenes politics of the industry this book, for me was both a wonderful wave of nostalgia and an in-depth learning experience. While because of Schuftan's attempt to include as many bands as possible and cover both the American and British alt rock scenes, the book does at times wander however I still found it all worthwhile. It was fascinating getting the stories behind the music that shaped my childhood and I'm completely bummed it had to end! Read this while listening to all the bands/albums that were mentioned in the book and recommend all music lovers to do the same!*Received from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review*

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Entertain Us needs a playlist. It's a great book if you listen along. By W. Mackela I wasn’t as engaged with Alternative Rock in the nineties as someone who was born in the seventies would have been. Many of the band names in this book were unfamiliar, but since I had the advantage of a paid membership to a streaming music service, I was able to listen to these groups and hear their music as I was reading about them.I knew the major players such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Oasis, and Smashing Pumpkins. I had listened to many of the other groups on the radio back then, but didn’t really pay much attention to their stories. I was 41 in 1990 and had to go to work everyday. This book taught me a lot about what was happening in music back then.Since I’m an American I knew more about the Seattle music scene than what was going on in Manchester, England. Much of the British music never made it here, and I’m sure that most of the lesser known American bands never were popular in Europe. So even if you grew up during the nineties, to really appreciate the book that Mr. Schuftan wrote, you will have to listen to some of the music that he writes about.Entertain Us goes into depth discussing the role of Alternative Rock. Mr. Schuftan talks about grunge, and how fame affected the way that Kurt Cobain and Eddie Vedder thought, how they tried to make their music less accessible and therefore less popular. He talks about other movements in music, how female musicians revolted, and formed groups that pushed back against the sexist role of women in rock. How MTV used the music of everyone in rock to sell hamburgers and toothpaste. How some bands couldn’t justify the money they made, when they wanted to change the world. Then some people went the other way, and took whatever was up for grabs, and said that it was only rock and roll, not revolution. There was a lot more going on behind the music than I ever knew about,Entertain Us is a thoroughly enjoyable book about music in the nineties. If you think that none of it will be new to you, you will be surprised, because there was such a separation of music between the US and the UK. Many bands never became popular because there was such a big difference in what was going on in music in their own countries. I can’t emphasize enough that you will have to spend the extra time and effort to listen to the music that Mr. Schuftan talks about as you are reading about it. If you don’t, you will just be reading a bunch of words that won’t make a connection in your brain. Entertain Us needs to come with a soundtrack. Maybe someone can put up a playlist on Spotify or Beats Music, so that we can more easily listen along. It would have helped a lot.I give Entertain Us 4 1/2 Stars out of 5 and a Big Thumbs Up! If you grew up during the nineties and claim the music from that time, read this book, because you will like the trip down memory lane, and also because you will learn more about what was going on at the time. If you are older, you probably don’t know most of the back story, but unless you are a real music fan, you may not care.I received a Digital Review Copy of this book from the publisher.

By Brett Mason This Book delivers ultimately on what it claims to.As far as giving an in depth look at most of the bands that shaped the music scene in the ninties and beyond. I felt there was a great mix of quotes and relevant facts to do with the feel of the era combined with the authors own experience and apparent love of this particular time in musical history. I myself, a music lover who grew up with a lot of the bands explored in this book would recommend it to anyone who wants to get a grasp on the who's the whats, the why's and the how's of some of the bands that shaped not just alternative music but many styles and musical minds of young people in particular in the 90's.

Left in the wild, Billie the elephant would have spent her life surrounded by her family, free to wander the jungles of Asia. Instead, she was captured as a baby and shipped to America where she arrived in the mid 1950s, long before circus and zoo-goers worried about animal living conditions. Billie spent her first years confined in a tiny zoo yard giving rides to children. At 19, she was sold and groomed for life in the circus. Billie mastered difficult stunts: she could balance on her hind legs, walk on her front legs and perform one-foot handstands. For twenty-three years she dazzled audiences, but she lived a life of neglect and abuse. As years passed, Billie rebelled. When she attacked and injured her trainer, a federal inspector ordered her taken off the road. For a decade she languished in a dusty barn. Finally, fate intervened. The U.S. Department of Agriculture removed Billie and fifteen other elephants as part of the largest elephant rescue in American history. Billie wound up at a sanctuary for performing elephants in Tennessee at 45, but she thundered with anxiety in her new environment and refused to let anyone remove a chain still clamped around her leg. Last Chain on Billie charts the growing movement to rescue performing elephants from lives of misery, and tells the story of how one emotionally damaged elephant overcame her past and learned to trust humans again.

Last Chain On Billie: How One Extraordinary Elephant Escaped the Big Top, by Carol Bradley

From Booklist *Starred Review* Like the majority of captive elephants, Billie was captured as a calf, surfacing in the U.S. in 1966 as a four-year-old. After several years in a private zoo, she joined the circus, where she was trained to perform. Circuses are an extremely demanding environment for elephants, with constant travel from one town to another, multiple shows per week, and continuous noise. Although she learned difficult tricks and was a star, Billie rebelled and began to be known as a difficult elephant, gaining a reputation for attacking her trainers. Meanwhile, two former elephant trainers had grown disenchanted with circuses and the distorted lives that circus elephants lived, and they decided to found a sanctuary for former performing elephants in Tennessee. The story of how Billie got to the Elephant Sanctuary, and of how the sanctuary overcame the prejudices of both the circus and zoo communities, is both heartrending and uplifting. Full of details of the brutal life endured by performing elephants, of battles between Billie’s owner and the U.S. Department of Agriculture over her ultimate fate, and of Billie’s eventual adjustment to a life of freedom, Bradley’s newest (after Saving Gracie, 2010) has produced a well-researched winner. --Nancy Bent

Review

“Last Chain on Billie is powerful and haunting. I urge everyone to read and share this important – and beautifully written – book.” ―Jane Goodall

“Last Chain on Billie deserves a standing ovation! It is a heart-rending and, unfortunately, deadly accurate description of elephant suffering in circuses and zoos. Please read Last Chain on Billie. It will help you understand why the animal rights movement is sweeping the country.” ―Bob Barker, legendary game-show host and ardent animal-welfare activist

“Last Chain on Billie brings the reader on an insightful, behind-the-scenes journey to witness Elephant experience in circuses and zoos. Not only do we learn about the realities of captive life, but also about the culture in which we live that has brought such anguish to the gentle Elephant. Billie's story compels us to reconcile how it is that our species, humans, do things to Elephants, that despite, their might and comparability in mind, they never do to us. This book represents a critical step on the path toward reconciliation with animal kin and human salvation.” ―G.A. Bradshaw Ph.D Ph,D, Founder and Director, The Kerulos Center, and author of Elephants on the Edge: What Animals Teach Us About Humanity

“Heartbreaking though it is, Last Chain on Billie will lift your spirits. You can't help but root for this feisty, determined elephant who refuses to yield to her human tormentors, and ultimately discovers that people can be kind, too.” ―Virginia Morell, author of Animal Wise

“Readers will want to stand up and cheer for Billie as she struggles to remain true to herself in the face of great odds, and they'll applaud the Elephant Sanctuary for offering this vulnerable but resilient elephant a chance at a new life. This ground-breaking book about the enduring strength of one of our most majestic creatures will capture hearts everywhere.” ―Elizabeth Letts, New York Times bestselling author of The Eighty-Dollar Champion

“After reading this heartfelt, poignant and deeply moving book, you will never look at an elephant the same way again. The narrative is at once brutal, uplifting and gripping. It is almost impossible to grasp the unspeakable cruelty these magnificent, intelligent beings have endured for so many years, all in the name of "family entertainment." But as Carol Bradley writes with exquisite detail and painstaking research, there is hope yet for these captive animals, and for the human race that has made them suffer so needlessly.” ―David Kirby, New York Times bestselling author of Animal Factory and Death at SeaWorld

“Last Chain on Billie is a fact-filled page-turning biography of a magnificent circus elephant's long, painful, and unpredictable journey from reprehensible confinement to freedom. It is at once riveting, haunting, and inspirational. Billie's story kept me up at night - tearful and joyful - as she entered and then wouldn't leave my heart. I also was deeply moved by the selfless work of the wonderful people who ultimately were able to free her once and for all so she could live out her life in safety and peace and with the dignity she so deserves. This outstanding and groundbreaking book will make a difference for other circus elephants and other 'entertainment animals' who find themselves living horrific and hopeless lives filled with fear, stress, and uncertainty. It gave me hope.” ―Marc Bekoff, author of Why Dogs Hump and Bees Get Depressed, The Emotional Lives of Animals, and Rewilding Our Hearts

“Today, Billie must celebrate every day, for she enjoys a more normal life, thanks to caring humans who spoke up for her and her like. Although the dream of returning to her homeland and her family can never be fulfilled, at least she has other elephant friends and caring humans who treat her kindly. Her story will go a long way towards helping others and saving them from a cruel life of bondage and servitude. Her story will educate people around the world about the nature of her iconic species, sparing many other young elephants miserable captivity.” ―Dr. Dame Daphne Sheldrick DBE, David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, Nairobi, Kenya, and author of Love, Life, and Elephants

“...both heartrending and uplifting...a well-researched winner.” ―Booklist (starred review)

“Vivid...A moving and informative account of the plight of trained elephants in the U.S.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“Last Chain on Billie is a wonderful book. It is well-written, well-researched, and well thought out. You cannot read it without realizing how extraordinary elephants are and how extraordinarily bad humans, until only very recently, have treated them. To understand what has happened to change our attitude, I can think of no better book than this. It is a labor of love, and I know many people will respond in kind. Anyone who loves elephants will love this book.” ―Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson, Ph.D., author of Dogs Never Lie About Love and Beasts: What Animals Can Teach Us About the Origins of Good and Evil

Carol did an amazing job of explaining the history of elephants in captivity and Billie's journey through it all. I heard of this book through The Elephant Sanctuary, as I love to visit their website and watch the Ele-Cams. This book made me laugh and cry and feel outrage over the injustice these beautiful creatures have to endure. I am thoroughly disgusted by the lack of punishment against Cuneo and circuses in general that abuse their elephants and cannot fathom why they are allowed to get away with such cruelty. Thank God for The Elephant Sanctuary and the amazing work that they do in providing a safe place for these elephants to spend the rest of their lives at. Highly recommend this book to any elephant lovers or those who wish to learn about the "training" practices that circuses use.

By LG Anyone who looks deep down into themselves knows that an elephant does not willingly do a handstand or put their front legs onto the back of another elephant. However, what really goes into those "performances" will blow your mind. And what that life does to one of the most majestic and most intelligent animals on the planet is disgusting and indefensible.Never, ever, go to the circus. You are simply endorsing cruelty if you do. It's time to rise up and show circuses that they are not fooling us any longer. Circuses are a collective stain on human history, one we should be trying to start clean up. This book sheds light on those trying to help. It is a sad, yet uplifting story - one that is worth reading...

I was so happy to learn about another elephant's life that lives at one of the places I do charity for, The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee. This is not only about Billie but tells the story of other elephants that got saved by the sanctuary. This book goes in depth about the horrors that are done to elephants in the circus and some zoos. I was appalled that some of these things were going on for so long before the USDA and the courts finally started to help. There are some people out there with no souls, they are cruel to animals and people. I really hope this book opens the eyes of more people as we petition circuses all of the time and know that these animals are beaten into submission and other horrors. This is a wonderful book telling stories of some beautiful creatures.

Ryan Schocket is annoyed. His undergraduate experience was nothing like what he had seen in every college-themed TV show or movie. “College left me derailed and delirious, with a minimized self-esteem and a maximally dense body.” As a freshman, he arrived to school knee-deep in optimism—and debt—and was met with the harsh truth that college isn’t the dreamland that it’s so exhaustingly painted as. He faced unrelenting humiliation and rejection, buffered by drunken nights and new freedoms. The Good, The Bad, & I’m Ugly? is his collection of awkward encounters and embarrassing stories that cover facets of undergraduate life that students won’t read about on their schools’ websites. Each story touches on these unspoken, fundamental aspects of college—like grinding at a party, going home with someone, conquering class icebreakers, overcoming inconvenient diarrhea, sharing a room, drinking, making friends, surviving stalkers, dealing with DWGs (Drunken White Girls), and more. Embedded in this retrospective collection of humorous stories are concepts that every teen and twentysomething face: freedom, loneliness, rejection, and change. His counsel ranges from sentimental (“The nostalgia ten years from now will transfix us, as we wonder just how we felt in that very moment of crisis or elation.”) to irreverent. (“If you can’t get into a party, say that you dropped your diabetes EpiPen when you were admitted inside earlier in the night.”) Ripe with self-deprecation, unfiltered opinion, and hilarious commentary, The Good, The Bad, & I’m Ugly prepares and comforts both prospective and current college students. In each chapter, readers will put on the shoes of an un-famous, socially awkward victim of the freshman fifteen. At twenty, Schocket is sure about one thing: college is not a utopia. And through his stories and advice, he hopes to guide readers before they abruptly awakened to that reality.

Review "Schocket has such a great voice--it is relatable and refined and charming and funny. I loved reading! He has such a wit that carries throughout the stories and is the kind of human that other people would like to slip into their back pocket as the guidebook for whatever awkward, funny, but life-defining moments college will take them through!" - Hannah Brencher, If You Find This Letter

About the Author Ryan Schocket is a 21-year-old from New Jersey. He is a junior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. There, he writes for a blog, called "Awkward Encounters," and works for the student-run independent newspaper, The Daily Tar Heel.

Ryan Schocket's personality and voice intensely shine through, making the reader actually laugh out loud the entire read. He never holds back from the sometimes ugly truth, as he exposes the unheard side of college life. No matter what experience you may have or not had in school, you can relate to his real anecdotes that start from youth and end in college. A must read for any odd ball, outcast, social climber, and definitely an entering freshman.

Any one who has a child going away to school I HIGHLY recommend this easy to read, funny thought provoking, and to the moms, a little bit of a tear jerker, for either you parents who worry or you students who are excited and scared. I also think it's a good read for anyone who has ever wished to "just fit in"! 5 Stars!

By Griffin Knowing how witty and humorous Ryan Schocket is in person, I had high hopes when starting this novel. These hopes were met and then some by the excellent style of writing that had me laughing uncontrollably at points. This is a book that all college students should read, especially those wishing to get a realistic heads up on what to expect for college. Everyone should add this to their cart right away!

I must be honest it has good and bad like everything else in this world but I want to say that I'm not bashing this book by any means, I feel being an author my that criticism can be a good thing if done in a respectable way. Having said that here goes nothing. I loved the premise of the book very much. As a movie lover I adore the fact that you came up with such a original book idea. Also there have been many many debates on which villain is the greatest. As for the cons of the book, and I will state I only was able to see the kindle version, I was extremely disappointed in the formatting of the book. the wording was scattered all over the place and pages did not look done professionally. That made it pretty frustrating to be able to read the book in a matter it needs to be read. This being your first book I will give you slack for that. Otherwise I think its a great idea and the amount of time and writing put into it was definitely shown.I'm sorry for only 3 stars but the format really made it hard for me to be to enjoy what is a good book.

Must have for movie fans or for those writing about or studying villains. The "Did you know" section for each villain often had some really interesting little piece of information. I also liked the "True villain moment."For those monster and bad guy lovers this is a great book to add to your collection. Made me want to watch a few more movies and gave me some great ideas for bad guys in my books.

Review

"Hernandez and Rue have been key players in the evolution of multimedia storytelling. With this book they detail the key tenants and history of this emerging format with detailed case studies on some of the top producers working today." ―Brian Storm, Founder, MediaStorm

"Hernandez and Rue take us behind the scenes to the pivotal moments that helped shape the techniques employed by today's best interactive storytellers. Along the way, they introduce us to a new way of categorizing stories, which gives those of us in the newsroom and classroom a foundation to think about new work." ―Josh Williams, Multimedia Editor, The New York Times

"I saw a piece of art from Pop artist Donny Miller that stated: ‘Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to think they're original.’ I appreciate the snark. But one truly needs to value history. If you understand how the past was shaped, your future will be better informed and more enlightened. Principles of Multimedia Journalism from Koci and Rue is a perfect combination of looking at the evolution of news design, diving deeply into recent case studies and exploring the current frameworks to help push us into the future." ―Andrew DeVigal, University of Oregon School of Journalism & Communication

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. I really like how it brought out old memories By Brian J This is an interesting look at the history of digital storytelling. I really like how it brought out old memories. I fondly remember the days of using old CD-ROMs and slide projectors. It's interesting to see how on-line storytelling came to be. It's a little frustrating to think how in some ways the media industry was so close, yet so far to truly getting it.I think it's helpful when you read this to know that the chapters are more of a collection of completely separate entities, and they can be read out of order. You can jump around and read what's most interesting. Here is a quick summary:Chapter 2 is the history section.Chapter 3 covers their taxonomy ideas, and is a little more involved reading.Chapters 4-7 are case studies to backup the taxonomy.Chapter 8 I thought was really interesting, almost a preamble about how people consume media, and maybe should have been placed much sooner.Chapter 9 is work flows for producers, and is probably the most practical chapterChapter 10 is an ending wrap-up

The best friend of the modern media creator By Alexmaron-kindle The body of this research is solid and amazing. They analysed and categorised every peace of media asset possibly available and developed a framework about how to understand and work with these storytelling components.I have been working with media for the last 20 years. When i started, we just had one channel to worry about: print, radio, TV. Now, when we think about a story, we have too many options and it can be overwhelming. This book really helps the content creator on the decision making process of which are the best assets to build so that you can tell an specific story.Great work!
