New digital health technologies – such as apps, wearables, and home sensors – are expected to revolutionize healthcare in the near future. But when will they become truly useful and usable for those with the most at stake: older adults with multiple medical problems? Better Digital Health for Aging equips digital health entrepreneurs with the information necessary to develop useful and usable products for the booming senior healthcare market. Written from a practicing doctor’s perspective and featuring a detailed case study, this book covers: • How older adults and clinicians manage health problems and health pain points, • Why current digital health tools often fail, • How to create digital health products that experts can recommend, and that seniors and family caregivers will find beneficial. Dr. Kernisan also provides a practical overview of key changes in healthcare that innovators should anticipate, as well as an essential overview of her specialty, geriatrics, and why its principles are key to better digital health products for seniors.

Review "It seems like everyone in digital health has checked the "user-centered design" box. Geriatrician Leslie Kernisan MD has more experience than almost anyone using and evaluating digital tools intended for seniors and their caregivers. As anyone who's read her great stuff on The Health Care Blog knows, she's been disappointed by the tools she's found. But instead of despairing, Leslie has written a deeply practical guide for anyone building a tool or service for seniors, complex chronically ill patients and their care givers--and it should be required reading for anyone who cares about the health of the elderly." - Matthew Holt, Co-Chairman, Health 2.0 Conference "If you want to design tools that will meaningfully solve health problems for the elderly, read this book. Leslie is truly a human-centered design expert for the field of geriatrics." - Joyce Lee, MD MPH, Healthcare Design Expert, Assoc Prof of Pediatrics & Public Health, University of Michigan "As a cancer-beating Baby Boomer who just turned 65, I have some pretty strong feelings about the differences between what healthy developers think versuss what aging people actually need, to manage life as their health gets more complex. You cannot solve the practical needs of people swimming in that pool by standing outside and imagining what it's like in there; you must get wet. This book is written from the front lines of wetness and, from Dr. Kernisan's years of experience, describes what will actually help people achieve better health while aging."- e-Patient Dave deBronkart, Healthcare Thought Leader, Speaker, Author"If your app is explicitly or implicitly impacting the aged community, then this book is required reading."- Fred Trotter, Co-Founder Careset Systems

A unique resource for digital health entrepreneurs By Steve Darden My review perspective is conditioned by my background as a computer scientist and retired software developer. So I have some understanding of digital product design, and a selfish interest in improving geriatric medical care.Who should buy this book? Dr. Kernisan's target readers are the creators of digital health care tools. This book is a unique resource for everyone hoping to succeed in that market - just buy it - now. As a prospective healthcare consumer I also found the book useful for insights into how the US health care system works, and what consumers need to know to navigate the US system. Elderly patients have an especially difficult challenge because there are so few physicians concentrating in geriatric care (Dr. Kernisan is one of the too-few geriatric specialists.) At the other end of the patient spectrum (pediatrics) there are many more doctors with appropriate training and experience. But the growth end of the medical market is us seniors. This is a practical book - carefully written to be easy to understand for people having no medical training. The core of the book is developed around the fictional character Joan, created to give the reader a concrete representation of the challenges that patients, families, and primary care providers face. Joan helps both Dr. Kernisan and the reader to stay focused on what the patient wants. I was a bit surprised at how often Joan's wants are very different from the goals of her doctor. Both are your prospective buyers. As are Joan's caregiver and the doctor's institution. The book is designed to help busy people get evidence-based ideas and answers quickly. It's well organized, indexed and referenced - so you can use it as a long-term resource. E.g., for engineers who know little about patients coping with a complex of interacting chronic conditions, there is an appendix of quality references you will need, such as the Medicare Chronic Conditions Chartbook. You need this book if you are involved in product development for the power users like Joan. I think it's a good value for us seniors too.Full disclosure: Dr. Kernisan provided a free review copy of this book in exchange for my review. This demonstrates a thorough study of how to successfully publish via Amazon. Good writing is hard work. Getting people to read your writing is perhaps a bigger challenge - and what's the point if nobody reads your work?

Anyone Designing Apps for Healthcare Should Read By claire I follow Dr. Kernisan's blog, and as a physician who also deals primarily with older patients, find her insights into tech applications helpful. She brings these insights together in her book, with very practical information for anyone interested in developing apps or other tech products for use by and for patients. She points out both user and design factors to consider, with users not only being the patient, but also the health care provider who may receive data collected, as well as involved family members. She explains the importance of not designing new digital tools based on the many flawed aspects of disease-based current health care, rather than considering a person and their life in a larger context. The book is very readable, with a case-based example running through much of it that helps illustrate her important points.I did receive a free advance copy in exchange for writing a review.Dr. Susan Molchan
