The book opens with a disclaimer of not redistributing without purchasing additional copies. I doubt that will be an issue. Ironically, the disclaimer and copyright info is the best written part of the whole book, as the remainder of the book is written in plain ol' English...ESL style. Heavily, at that. Before I am accused of being a racist elitist, let me point out that the ESL writing will actually cause severe issues with any MTG noob, as the critical elements of the game are often referred to quite differently than what Wizards of the Coast intended. "Creatures" are "Animals" which is severely misleading, as many creatures are actually humanoid in appearance. So while some of the ESL issues are humorous instead, I agree that "Artifacts" are indeed "vapid" LOL, many of them are mores serious, and practical, in nature. In addition, the book begins with a description of the various text found on most any MtG card, but lacks illustration to the referenced text, instead showing only a card and expecting a noob to know where to look when a certain feature of the card is examined. Yeah, no. Just confused any new player out there with that. Made worse by the fact that the author actually says, when referencing the card without a diagram, (this) is this and (does this).Other issues include statements such as "You'll recognize that land has no content; this is due to the fact that the land can only tap for mana." Um, come again. Let's throw out Mishra's Factory, Strip Mine or a whole host of Lands that do things other than "tapping for mana."Another strike against it, is that it regurgitates a large amount of information already presented in other works, and poorly at that. The Deck Builds at the end of the book are standard decks which have been running around since MtG first started back in '97. In that respect, the guide offers nothing new to seasoned vets. Add to this the inability to reference key terms with their proper names, this guide offers only confusion and misery for the MtG noob looking for a headstart on the competition. And most sickenly of all, the guide closes by stating that "once you start to implement the strategies outlined in this guide, there will be a much greater success of chance for you. In addition, you will find yourself beating any Magic Card Opponent you encounter." NO guidebook can truthfully promise that you will beat ANY opponent you face in Magic. This alone is worthy of a lawsuit. :/There is some good content in this book, however, which is why I am giving two stars instead of one, but the overall damage caused by inappropriate and misleading information, as well as the fact that much of the content is regurgitated from other sources, makes it a tedious read at best.

Second it seems like the author just wanted to make a quick buck. My ten year old could describe the game better and he's the person I bought it for .

For an unofficial guide, it does pretty amazing job of getting a newbie setup for serious challenges against seasoned players. I enjoyed it and I learned a lot. And most importantly, I am not so easy to beat anymore.
