Heart-Based Singing: Vocal Technique, by Agatha Carubia

Review "Agatha Carubia's Heart-Based Singing presents an updated and contemporary approach to the time-honored tradition of bel canto. She provides valuable and accessible lessons, which are soundly based on her years of experience as singer and voice instructor. Her passion and dedication to the art of singing will inspire singers of all levels."- Eudora Brown, Operatic Mezzo Soprano"Agatha's technique gave me a deep, natural connection to my voice that has kept me in top performance condition since I began studying with her. As I have grown as a vocalist and per- former, this approach has continued to serve as my foundation. Her methods facilitate a true understanding of one's instrument that does not rely on tricks or gimmicks. Simply legitimate, unpolluted knowledge."-Andrea Matthews, Brown University"Agatha inspired me right away to sing my vowels and to practice feeling the resonances in all the places described. Even for a non-singer like me, the method makes for really joyous practicing. Agatha says singing is 'practically medicine.' From my perspective as a somatic therapist, I would say that when using her method, singing most definitely IS medicine! Emily Conrad, developer of Continuum Movement, calls the dance of movement and sound in the body, 'moving medicine.' While practicing singing now, I experience that same sensation of moving medicine. This is medicine of the best kind!"-Heather Young, Somatic Therapist"I am almost done with your book. I am enjoying it very much and find it refreshing. I bet that is something your colleagues have said to you - refreshing. It is a very good counter balance to the mechanical approach we often see that segregates the mechanism's function - separating the singer from both joy and aesthetic success. The title is the best: heart - based... as a stage director, I find that I have to reconnect the actor to why they loved performance in the first place. The engine of their art was sparked by a sensation and buoyancy and glow they felt in their heart. Heart-Based Singing reclaims and anchors singing to that natural wonderful moment."-David Herendeen, Director of Opera and Musical Theater, Oklahoma City University

I immediately knew she had something special to offer the world. We started as neighbors, then became friends. Eventually, I became her student and assistant for workshops, when she was in Hawaii. As she shared her knowledge of singing, she also shared that she intended one day to turn this wonderful material into a book. Yay, I'm so glad she did.Agatha's approach to singing combines traditional classical methodology, which the old-schooler in me really likes, with Eastern philosophy and energy systems. East has been meeting West in many traditions, and now Agatha brings these beautiful metaphors and exercises into the world of singing and vocal instruction. They are gentle, effective, if used as a regular practice can improve your voice and heal your spirit. When I first met Agatha, I had stopped singing. I had a lot of musical wounds, and I had all but given up music. Agatha, however, wanted me to start using my voice again, and with her help, I was able to reach parts of my voice that I didn't know I had. She taught me the methods that she teaches in this book. Doing that freed up other parts of my musical world, and today I am working in the areas of music again. Thanks you, Agatha!

Aguilar As a recent graduate from a music program, I know this book will benefit all people studying vocal technique. I've been able to use the technique in every style I sing. I use it when I practice - it has really saved me from frustrating sections and some bad vocal days. The book is super light and slim - fits perfectly in my choir folder. Here are some highlights I enjoy:- Detailed instruction on every aspect of singing, including posture, breath support, and how to feel good singing (troubleshooting sections, like how to help with "running out of breath")- Fun notated vocal exercises that help explain ideas like resonance, vowels, flexibility, etc. (great for warming up with and strengthening your voice (you can sing along to them on the website!))- Connection to the body/mind/soul- Practical advice related to recital selections, singing in a band, and aria interpretation- Countless nuggets of wisdom about more than just singing- Colorfully written with motivation quotations and a sense of humor :)And so much more!!!The book walks you through the first steps in singing all the way to concepts I still wrestle with today. I know I'll be referencing it as I continue singing and especially when I begin teaching! Thanks Agatha!

By Amazon Customer Heart-Based Singing is a guide for every musician and yogi! A synthesis of spirit and voice, this book offers a method that is inspiring, empowering and practical. Heart-Based Singing embodies the atmosphere Agatha creates in her vocal studio. As a classical pianist, I found that I sometimes held my breath while practicing or performing. The techniques offered in this book have greatly benefited my ability to play with breath and freedom. The principles of heart-based singing are thoughtfully and thoroughly presented. It all begins at the heart of the matter – with the primary use of breath and the generating centers of energy. Agatha continues with a practical, step-by-step guide through the method, using sensitively detailed descriptions and applications. She outlines a daily practice – from head to toe and back! Each chapter begins with an inspiring quote - from a 13th century monk on Mt. Athos to Frank Zappa. The twenty-one pages of vocal maxims, lovingly offered through Agatha’s insight and wisdom, reveal that Heart-Based Singing is cultivated through a life-long love of teaching and learning. It is her gift to us, offered from her devotion to music, yoga, and expressing life in the finest possible way. I can’t wait to take a workshop!
