Four people who could not be more dissimilar pitched in on a lottery ticket and split the $16,000,000 jackpot. Two teenages were lost. Macy hit by a car driven by the town drunk and Hoop who disappeared. Two funerals were held, Macy's and thedrunk whose car hit a tree.Chloe who was 14 that spring is now 26 and a reporter for the local paper. She has been tasked with writing an article about "The Week," to be published by the twelth anniversary. The article was requested by an anonymous person who was willing to make a charitable donation for the story. Chloe is happy with the assignment. Over the years she has searched for her lost friend Hoop and has kept herself at arms length from love because of a teenage crush.On the morning Chloe sets out to interview people who were most connected to the big occurrences, she sees smoke ahead and with that smoke comes the beginning of a story with more twists and turns than the snakes mentioned within.The author has set the town of Beulah on a swamp and the details of flora and fauna seem to be written by a naturalist. The deeper Chloe digs the more she finds that the scariest things in a swamp may not be gators or snakes. There are a plethora of belly crawlers.There is a handsome new man in town who lives across the swamp from Chloe and they actually meet over a dead body. He seems to have designs on her. Although the deputy sheriff broke up with Chloe almost a year ago he is still in love with her and always answers her calls for help.Once I picked up this book, I could not put it down. The plot is so fresh and original. The grand finale which is advertised as a magic show is spectacular. You don't want to miss this book!

Anne McAneny's CIRCLED reminds us that sometimes life unfolds in the most unexpected way By Cyrus Webb I've enjoyed reading books by Anne McAneny over the past few years and the book CIRCLED is a perfect addition to the CRIME AFTER TIME collection. We are able to see how the characters are dealing with life-changing events of the past while still trying to move forward in their present lives.In CIRCLED we are able to see how Chloe is dealing with a loss from 12 years prior while doing her job as a reporter and an individual still healing. As things around her seem to be going in the wrong direction while working on a requested assignment, Chloe realizes that some things can't stay buried and others will lead you full circle with your unresolved past.This is a book that really takes you into the journey of Chloe and a town that has a past so many of us can relate to with its closets full of skeletons and trust being something hard to find---or do. The reader is sure to be caught up in McAneny's web once again, and eagerly await the next book

The hope everlasting was encouraging and so well conveyed. A very cleverly woven plot with well developed characters. The knowledge of the swamps wad interesting also. Super writing skills that immediately hook you into the story. I would highly recommend this book and I will most certainly be reading all Anne McAneny's other books. Thanks for the mental ride.

About the Author

ANDREW PEACOCK was born in Toronto and raised in the town of Kapuskasing in northern Ontario. After finishing degrees in biology at Trent University and veterinary medicine at the University of Guelph he moved with his wife to the small fishing village of Freshwater on the island of Newfoundland. As a veterinarian he worked in a mixed animal practice in rural Newfoundland from 1982 until 2010. He is now retired from clinical practice and works for the Newfoundland and Labrador College of Veterinarians. Andrew and his wife previously owned an independent bookstore named "Waterwords" in the town of Carbonear. His family, writing, music, photography and love of the outdoors keep him very busy and happy.

Amusing but lacks Character By Nicola Mansfield Amusing collection of anecdotes from a veterinarian who left Ontario to work in Newfoundland and never left. An interesting tidbit of information which is never mentioned in the story is that this author is the brother of famous Canadian YA writer, Shane Peacock. Andrew, unfortunately, doesn't have his brother's gift for storytelling, at least yet. I'm not a pet person myself but find I'm fond of vet/zoo/animal expedition tales; what I found lacking here was a good narrative voice and a connection with the characters. The stories were interesting, amusing and certainly gave off a genuine love for the landscape and people of Newfoundland. The writing though is stilted and the humour often falls flat of where it seemed to be aiming. With hardly any repetition of recurring patients and owners the book lacks cohesiveness and the potential for a reader to become invested in any characters is lost. However, this certainly doesn't mean the vignettes collected here are not worth the read.

By Luanne Ollivier A young friend of mine has just started her professional career in Newfoundland, leaving behind friends and family, knowing not one soul in her new home.When I saw Andrew Peacock's newly released memoir, Creatures of the Rock: A Veterinarian's Adventures in Newfoundland, it struck a chord. Hailey, this one's for you!In 1982 newly minted veterinarian Andrew Peacock and his physician wife (also recently graduated) move from Ontario to Newfoundland to start their professional careers. They too, knew no one. The plan - stay two years.In Creatures of the Rock, Peacock recounts those first days and the ensuing years in a practice that spanned twenty eight years on the Avalon Peninsula. Peacock was the only vet for 130 miles, on call night and day - and on his own.His patients ranged from the smallest house pet to one of the largest animals you could imagine - a whale! And of course the owners of those animals are a large part of the story as well. We meet the neighbours and the clients as Peacock and his wife settle into life on the Rock and raise their three children in the small community of Freshwater. I enjoyed the glimpse into life in Newfoundland and I also picked up some animal husbandry knowledge!Peacock's writing has an ease to it, a tone of conversation almost. His warmth, humour and compassion and love of his profession are evident in his recounting of his years tending to the creatures in his territory. He's a very engaging storyteller.There are photographs included with the book - it was nice to put a face to a voice I really enjoyed reading. There will be inevitable comparisons to British vet, James Herriot. Peacock acknowledges that those tales were a model for his own. My advice? Pick up Peacock's book - it's homegrown and a really great read. Here's an excerpt of Creatures of the Rock.Andrew and Ingrid still make their home in Newfoundland. And Hailey's adventures are just beginning....

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Delightful book! By Joyce Simard I know Andrew and have loved hearing about his adventures as a veterinarian in Newfoundland. When I heard he wrote a book, I could not wait to read it. I have and find it a wonderful book to just enjoy. With the terrible situations that are occurring all over the world, this book reminds us that one person can make a positive impact in the lives of people and animals. His descriptions of the people he meets though his work are so colorful, the language and approaches to various situations with their animals are a wonderful way to escape from the "other" news of the day. Now, of course I must visit Newfoundland as the way Andrew paints pictures of this beautiful county have me anxious to see it myself.

About the Author Kate has been studying art for as long as she can remember. Back in 1999 she became a qualified medical illustrator, but due to an aversion to blood found her life taking a different route. She opened a pet portrait business, which became successful, but she found she wanted and needed more of a challenge. This came in the form of the human body. Not wanting to just draw portraits and nude models she was looking for something else. Something more. Then in 2015 she found it. She stumbled upon a social site that allowed people to express themselves in different ways. People who wanted to feel free and both give and take pleasure. She joined and soon found herself amongst others who wanted to push their bodies to extremes. Not only through the limits of physicality but also through emotion. Suddenly she found that by drawing the human body with rope, she could capture a vulnerability that had been missing. So now she draws what others label as erotic art, although Kate maintains that it is just art. She looks, not for sexuality, but for beauty in form and emotion. So the line drawings that are included in this book are not overtly sexual but they are sensual. Kate describes herself as a sensual artist as opposed to an erotic artist.

Neither Adored Nor Despised By ratty While some might find this offensive (although if you do it was a mean gift or you didn't read the description) one main thing that I did not like was that all of the figures appeared to be female. Also many of the figures did not have heads or legs. This suggests helplessness rather than pleasure. The author states that she is a sensual artist, but I, personally, do not find helplessness sensual.

Its brief, but packed with creepy stories that will spook you...especially the ones about the 'robot' entities and the missing persons. So scary to think about...it will give you the chills if you are alone and it is in the middle of the night. Its that type of book, the kind you remember on cold, dark nights when out alone and suddenly you flash on a terrifying memory of one of these stories!. It will get under your skin!.

You start off with a chapter from Matthew, 2 chapters a day starting in Acts & a few verses from Proverbs. With this being an ebook you can have your devotions with you to read any time that you're "waiting" for something else.

The author did a great job filling this book with a lot of great information. There's great steps, procedures, yummy recipes and a lot more. Just don't have enough time to tell, plus I'll let you see for yourself. This book was planned very well and has lots of quality inside to learn from. Overall great book, would recommend this!

The book is carefully written to leave nothing out when it comes to burning body fat and having a really toned body and better health. In the book you will find a nice combination of fruits, vegetables and of course exercise that complement each other in your journey to a better health.The best part of the book for me is the recipes. Here, there is no guess work, the recipe is laid out for you and all you need do is follow the instructions and in no time you will be able to wipe up a nice dinner, breakfast or launch for yourself. This will help you maintain your metabolism and make your body function optimally.

By Charles Drewek I've been searching lately for ways that I can improve my diet and I came across this book. Very detailed! It will give you a full plan for the entire 14 days with ingredients and cooking directions for every single meal. However before committing to this plan I would want to know what kind of results I could expect from following the plan. Additionally I would want to know where to go after the 14 day plan is over. I would recommend this book if you have no eating habits established and need a kickstart to being healthier. You'll have everything laid out for two weeks but you'll have to search elsewhere after that in your quest for a healthier diet.

By Dr. Adams A harrowing real-life account by a high school athlete of his experience of being pressured to play through a very serious injury, resulting in a disturbing worsening of the original injury. Ryan Buxman tells his personal story of playing through injury with candor, insight, and an immaculate focus on making sense of his experiences and using them to make the world a better place. While Ryan's personal attitude is very inspiring, the book itself sounds an alarming wake-up call about what happens when we as a society fail to balance our passion for the warrior mentality of sports with the need to be more conscientious about actually caring about the well-being of the people we put on pedestals and cheer on. We need to do a much better job of knowing when to just let someone rest, and we need to learn how to make sure that person still feels valued on the team. On a more positive note, I really enjoyed reading the parts about nutrition and CrossFit. This was very inspiring and gave me some great ideas about my own fitness routine. Perhaps most inspiring is the fact that Ryan has actually created a non-profit organization dedicated to helping out athletes who have had experiences similar to his. The book is also a great, almost encyclopedic, resource for anyone seeking information on the topic of athletes being pressured to play through injuries. Ryan has clearly been transformed by his experiences, and is an inspiration to anyone struggling to recover from any type of traumatic event.

In the last third of the 19th century Brahms and Bruckner were regarded as antipodes. Is this perception really true to the historical reality or had their contemporaries overestimated the «dimension of their distance», as argued later? Both wrote autonomously conceived music, both held on to traditional forms, and both rejected program music. To find an answer to this question, part I tries to elucidate Brahms’ relation to Bruckner in its biographic, historical, artistic and art-theoretical aspects. At the center of the second part, whose subject is Brahms’ early work, is the question whether Brahms was indeed an autonomously working composer. The topic of the third part is a taboo of Bruckner research: Bruckner’s relation to program music. «The second and third part of the study achieve new insights. About the Author Constantin Floros is professor emeritus of Musicology at the University of Hamburg. Among his monographs are volumes on the origin of Gregorian neumes, about Gustav Mahler, Anton Bruckner, Johannes Brahms, Ludwig van Beethoven, the Symphony of the 19th Century, Alban Berg and György Ligeti. Ernest Bernhardt-Kabisch is professor emeritus of English and Comparative Literature at Indiana University, Bloomington (IND.). He has translated several books by Constantin Floros.

By scarecrow this is a nice collection of Riley, I loved having the "keyboard studies" now I can play them; there are other pieces some quite early and later of fixed and questionable interest. Not all that Riley writes is worth a second visit.....but this is the price you pay to be interested in his music in the first place....the post-modern times seems to take away just as much as it provides.....

By anthroguy Lakdawala's most recent contribution to Everyman's Move by Move series resurrects Bird's opening, which has been unjustly neglected for decades. The Bird is a Dutch reversed, so if you want to employ both openings in your repertoire you'll find this particularly helpful. I've been through Cyrus' book twice now, and yesterday I won one game and drew another, both against rated opponents (my own rating is around 1750).The analysis is thorough and up to date, meticulously checked by the comps. Unlike the other reviewer who commented here, I don't mind the author's writing style -- it enlivens what otherwise could be the tedious work of labouring through intricate moves and diagrams, and even serves for me as a kind of mnemonic that highlights key moments in the game being presented. If a chessbook can be novelistic, why not?The slightly earlier Tim Taylor book on the Bird, and Henrik Danielsen's very recent online collection of games via Kindle, serve as counterpoint to Lakdawala's book. All three players/authors have a slightly different take on the Bird, so I find that the three complement one another nicely. If you don't like one approach to a particular line of the Bird, you can try another!

I play the Bird's Opening myself, and I was always irritated by the lack of material put out on the subject. I own both of IM Timothy Taylor's book on the Bird's, and I also own Henrik Danielsen's ebook aswell, and I can easily say this is the most comprehensive book on the market.I struggled with a few variation of the Bird's and tried to make several of the variations work, reasonably, and I came up with few ideas that seem to make the Classical Bird's opening viable for play. While IM Taylor's book seems to touch on the classical variation just for the sake of taking up space, IM Lakdawala puts down very strong ideas that bring up the classical variation's reputation.As always, IM Lakdawala entertains with his trademark colorful style, and makes evaluations and variation easy to digest.My personal way of playing the Bird's has changed, and I am seeing results in both online play, and in over-the-board tournament settings. I would highly recommend anyone wanting to learn the Bird's pick this book over the others.

The content is good BUT for the life of me please don't make a chess book into a literary pulitzer prize wannabe novel... I'll quote a few examples: "... Black’s e-pawn insolently looks in our direction and makes a neck-slicing gesture by dragging a finger across its throat.", "... with free associative interpretations.", "The bishop, unsatisfied with mere reverence from his followers, now demands outright worship from his g7-brother. The hermetic seal of Black’s defence finally opens a crack, just enough to allow infiltration.", "Sherlock Holmes said that in life-threatening emergencies, we tend to “save the object dearest to our hearts.” In the case of the black king, the “dearest” object happens to be himself. He has little choice but to forgive his h6-sister her trespasses - mainly since she has the power to arbitrarily order his immediate execution if the mood comes upon her.", "Black’s king reminds us of a psychologically tormented victim in an Edgar Allan Poe story.", "“So now you recognize - much too late - the degree to which my power overwhelms yours,” the queen tells her unfortunate b6-rival." and so on and on and on... This book could have been made more concise and clear without the need for metaphors nor literary references. I could see some foreigners buying this book become confused with the colorful comments. I particularly do not like it.EDIT: I added an extra star to credit for the good chess content.
