Kimmel "Mr. North" is a light and relatively minor film from 1988, albeit one with a strong cast. It was directed by 25 year old Danny Huston, son of the legendary director John Huston, who had collaborated on the script and was to have a role in the film. When John was too ill to appear Robert Mitchum stepped in. Shot in Newport, Rhode Island, it would be largely forgotten but for the fact that Nat Segaloff, then a freelancer film critic for the Boston Herald, was given the opportunity to have exclusive behind the scenes access to the people involved in making the film. These included Anthony Edwards, Lauren Bacall, Angelica Huston, Harry Dean Stanton, David Warner, and Virginia Madsen. Now bringing together his reporting at the time with the perspective of nearly thirty years, Segaloff paints a warm and at times funny portrait of several generations of Hollywood coming together on a film project, with john Huston's failing health an ever-present reminder that an era is passing.Full disclosure: I am a friend of the author who has collaborated with him on some projects. I have read an enjoyed many of his books. This one is special. He captures the lack of glamour in the production of a movie, and the excitement of having the rare privilege of being an outsider who was invited in to observe.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Well-written and well-edited book about a master filmmaker By David W. Menefee Mr. North was an ordinary film made under extraordinary circumstances. Modest of budget, humble of ambition, and pleasant of purpose, it was intended, first, as light entertainment, and, second, as a means by which a young director could get a foothold on a career. Inasmuch as the young director was the son of a very well-known older director, the father prevailed upon his movie star friends to help him give his son a jumpstart into feature filmmaking. What nobody anticipated was that the director-father would become critically ill just as filming started and that his struggle to postpone death would haunt every moment of what was supposed to be a romantic adventure set in a recent fairy-tale past. The old director was John Huston, and the events surrounding. Well-written and edited, the book includes Footnotes, Endnotes, Epilogue, Index, and a generous photo section.

Mr. Huston/Mr. North presents an intimate portrayal of life on-set with one of the great dynasties of American cinema, but Segaloff is, by no means, obsequious towards his subjects. If you long for the days of movie stars and wish to experience the kind of organized pandemonium, commitment and cold pasta salad it takes to pull off a movie, then this is the read for you. I recommend enjoying a martini while reading...be liberal with the vermouth
