Dumb Criminals if not all that funny By Gail Christian This was not nearly as funny as I had hoped it would be, but there were some that made me laugh. However, almost all of them make you wonder why these criminals ever bothered in the first place: "What were they thinking?"Got it free, had a few laughs, shared the better ones with my husband -all in all not a bad way to spend a lazy summer afternoon. Definitely worth checking out.

Professor Birdsong's 157 Dumbest Criminal Stories attempts to share brilliant material but the delivery is so deadpan and lacking in comedic presentation value that the book falls flat. Have you ever heard a person who had a really great joke but their delivery was so bad the comedy just died on the vine. That's the problem with Professor Birdsong's 157 Dumbest Criminal Stories. The stories if told by a less clinical story teller might have been more entertaining. It takes a very special professor to tell a funny story using clinical language and methods. Professor Birdsong's 157 Dumbest Criminal Stories shares its comedic jewels in a far too clinical dispassionate way. The silly purely human factor of the stories is not amplified. Stories like this should be told as if you are in a bar room not a class room.Law Enforcement often does a far better job of sharing funny criminal stories because; officers must find the humor in such painful ugly experiences to survive in their chosen profession. Law Enforcement Officers often have just enough people skills to relate the funniest aspects of human failings they encounter on the job. The academic world isolates the good professor from the subjects he speaks of in his book in ways that distance him from the situation. The distance an academic keeps from his subject matter is different than the kind of distance a law enforcement officer uses to keep his perspective. Clinical distance reduces the most funny aspects of the human to that of white mice engaging in conditioned responses. That clinical distance that isolates Professor Birdsong from his subject matter also isolates him from the funny bones of his audience. Law Enforcement has the social skills needed to bring the readers into the dumb criminal situation as if it is a virtual ride-a-long. You feel you are witnessing a police officers funniest experiences as if you are there with him watching the madness unfold before your eyes in a virtual ride-a-long.Professor Birdsong does a great job of trying to make his stories funny and his stories are funny in the teacher standing before the lecturn desperately trying to be funny and mostly failing sort of way. Don't get me wrong some of Professor Birdsongs deliveries are really very good but most fall flat. I give lots of speeches on living with autism. I have learned how to teach using humor and it is hard at first but after time you learn to resonate with the audience. You can tell when an audience is geniune in its laughter and when its laughter forced because it is the polite thing to do. Professor Birdsong's 157 Dumbest Criminal Stories is filled with chuckles but very little out and out side splitting, gut busting laughter. I give Professor Birdsong's 157 Dumbest Criminal Stories for a good effort because; I chuckled. I took two stars off because I did not laugh and most of the stories in this book. The dumb criminal experiences were concieved with care, documented with great passion but the comedy arrived on the page still born clinically dry, almost totally devoid of humor. The key to writing funny stories is to first know that people want to laugh because; laughter is good for us. Next talk to people like you are at a bar, or a picnic hosted by bikers who are good but common and proudly uniquely politically incorrect. Write in a manner that reveal human faults, traits and feelings that we law biding citizens have often but seldom if ever act on. People laugh more when you make them unwitting accomplices to the jokes and the bad things the criminal classes do. It is called engaging your readsre and the good professor Birdsong failed at engaging his readers. If you don't engage your readers you will bore them stiff simply because that is the only alternative left!
