As a baby boomer I throughly enjoyed revisiting this quintessential American decade delightfully portrayed by this talented author. Parties & Porches gives the reader a guided tour of the 50's; month by month, highlighting significant holidays along the way. The reader will find all kinds of helpful hints, party planning and recipe ideas inside this little gem. The author also interweaves some of her personal recollections, family traditions of the decade which are LOL! The book makes a great hostess gift to anyone who celebrates all things vintage!

It is extremely well written - when reading, it takes you back to the 50's - you really are there! There are great stories about friendships, growing up, what it was like (especially entertaining) and more including "can't wait to try it" recipes and many touching photos. I highly recommend this delightful, sweet and inspiring book which brings out the best of the 50's, making you wish things hadn't changed. Great job!

The author and friends take a look back at yesteryear when they learned invaluable life lessons from true steel magnolias or "life masters" on the porches of the family home. Mothers, grandmothers, aunts, teachers, and other powerful female role models were keeping it real and molding sturdy, resilient characters who could face life on its own terms and not faint, wilt, or think about it another day. This is a book about the healing powers of friendship, family, food, tradition, and celebrations of everyday life. The contributors are a diverse group, including a man whose perspective on retro style and design is concise and on point. This would be a perfect gift for people who love vintage style or mid-century anything.Whenever you're having a bad day, think about the mother of four wildly enthusiastic children and one overly excited spring lamb running through the house while a frantic mother tries to corral them and shoo them back outside. Or the little boy who turned Bible School commencement into a Three Stooges/Charlie Chaplin event.Love people as they are and not as you wish them to be is a central message. Make time for those you love and share your story with the younger generation. Be yourself. Share. Laugh. Help others when you can. And try to find what is good and right in people and the world, even when it is hard to do sometimes.
