Alzheimer’s: Embracing the Humor is a compilation of short stories that were inspired by photographs of a life with both parents afflicted with AD. The double whammy and it's compounding effect sets the stage for some stories, funny tragic stories. Trained in the visual arts, I know a technically good photograph when I see one. None here. These photos are of the moment and without the invention of cameras in phones, these little life tableaus would be lost as my parents cannot be set up for posing. They loose focus and the poignancy is gone. I found that without an approach infused with humor, dealing/helping my parents would become untenable. A good pairing because the things that they did and continue to do are ironic, charming and down right hilarious. I just write what I see. 60 pages. A quick read that can be done again and again. About the Author Nina Karavasiles is not so much a writer, not part of the writers culture and is horribly bad with grammar. She/I is about thinking and sometimes that works out on paper with words or images. More often it works out in a sculptural form. See ninak.info for her day job as a public artist. Her latest book 'Alzheimer's; Embracing the Humor' is a chronicle of passage with an eye and heart set to finding the funny stuff in watching/helping her parents work through Alzheimer's disease. At that time, I was caring for my great uncle who was 97 and had broken his hip. The experience of providing care for him was difficult & at times overwhelming, and he was one person who ‘only’ had age related dementia. Uncle Al was a terrific man so somehow I managed and he made it to 100!Many years later Nina moved her parents to the west coast because they both (yes both!) have Alzheimer’s. Because of my experience with Uncle Al, I have a small glimmer of the challenge she faces. Nina is extraordinary and handles this most difficult of situations with extraordinary kindness and patience. Her love, grace & humor with the adventures of George & Mary are captured in this ebook. Thor the wonder dog even has a starring role.
