Review 5 Stars! Reviewed by Roy T. James for Readers' FavoriteThe Commode Companion by Rolf C. Margenau is a collection of photographs termed..as an excellent bathroom companion. I felt bad, thinking he was belittling his work, then I read that his decision was in line with the scientific finding; laughter cures constipation. Now I agree with the author for this book is hilarious.I enjoyed every page of this book...This is an excellent companion, whether in the bathroom or outside, and can hold one's interest for a long time, since the pictures tell stories and the short captions speak volumes.

From the Back Cover The author was raised by feral chipmunks in the wilds of northern Connecticut, realized at an early age that small children and furry animals considered himan equal, attended a college that had a bull dog as its mascot, practiced law withcorporate wolves and tigers as clients, and retired to write books about plants, animals and people. He lives in northwestern New Jersey surrounded by hiswife, many dogs, a flock of wild turkeys, deer, coyotes, numerous other furrycreatures, and a large black bear who is unduly fond of his bird feeders. He isnow working on a book about what happens in the near future when congresstries to save our bankrupt country by selling off the national parks.

  • Fills a burning need for a book about talking animals. Finally, a photographer/writer with the skill and wit to discover what creatures really think gives us the answers. Bravo!
  • -Writer's mother.
  • Wicked good pictures; fair to middlin' words.Does well in our outhouse.
  • -Pierre Lafitte, Maine Lobsterman
  • This awful photo book discriminates against frogs!Steal it; don't buy it.
  • -Anonymous amphibian
  • Laughed until tears rolled from my crocodile eyes.
  • -"Jaws" Prendergast
  • Amusing little book that, unfortunately, fails to grasp the dichotomous nature of conceptualizing auditory responses from sub-human species. If a butterfly could talk, I doubt it would speak English. It would speak butterfly, which the author has failed to translate properly or support his derivations. This is a flawed attempt, which, nevertheless, rises to risibility.

About the Author The author of The Commode Companion has been a professional photographer, an attorney specializing in international corporate law, a volunteer executive running a not-for-profit dedicated to housing the homeless, a manager of large and small businesses and, lately, an author and Master Gardener. He first published short stories as an English Major from Yale. Finding the double-digit pay for that work insufficient to support a wife and one and a half children, he went to law school in hopes of finding better paying work. Fortunately, that proved to be the case. Failing miserably at retirement, the author reverted to his early love, writing, and has produced, to date, five books: Public Information about a boy who finds himself in in the Korean War; Pistils and Poetry, a books which juxtaposes Elizabethan poetry with photographs of flowers; Master Gardener a satirical novel about a group of Master Gardeners taking on BIG AG. His third novel, published in August 2014, is High Andes. The central narrative follows Wylie Cypher, in his mid-forties and suffering from a serious mid-life crisis, and his daughter, Mercy, as they try to elude various villains chasing them across the White Mountains of Peru. The story deals with armed insurrection by Maoist guerillas, smuggling ancient artifacts, "disappearances" of troublemakers, a five hundred year old child mummy, and the CIA. Discovering that his photographs of animals with irreverent captions attracted notice in the social media, Margenau took respite from his next novel and created The Commode Companion, a photography book for adults. Rolf Margenau lives in rural New Jersey with his wife, three dogs, a 1932 Chrysler convertible, and a flower garden favored by monarch butterflies. He is now working on his fourth novel. Tentatively titled National Parks, the story recounts what happens, in the near future, when Congress decides to resuscitate a bankrupt America by privatizing its National Parks.

The Commode Companion By BigAl If you've ever had a friend post a humorous looking picture on Facebook and ask his or her friends to provide a caption, you'll have a good idea of what to expect with The Commode Companion. The origins of the name should be apparent. It's the perfect book for those times when you're looking for entertainment in bite-sized bits. The just shy of 100 pictures and Margenau's suggested captions should do the trick for a few visits to the room down the hall. How many will depend on how regular you are. I found the captions humorous and amusing. For the Kindle edition, the book works fine on an eink based ereader, but the pictures are much better in color. Use your tablet computer or smartphone for best results. The book description calls this book “interactive.” What this is getting at, explained more fully in the book's introduction, is the author invites readers to propose alternative captions. The intent is to update the book from time to time based on these suggestions.**Originally written for "Books and Pals" book blog. May have received a free review copy. **

This latest contribution is just another example of his creative genius and photographic skill. This book is filled with Rolf's wit, wisdom, and photographic prowess. I’ve had the pleasure of reading his other works Pistils and Poetry, High Andes. I’ve also had the wonderful pleasure of meeting Mr. Margenau and have enjoyed listening with great pleasure of his life’s experience’s and travels all over the world, which have led him to create this fantastic collection. Please don’t ever stop sharing these gifts you possess, many many thanks for this latest contribution. I patiently await the next.

Definitely not just something to keep in the loo, because you will want to share this wit with anyone who has a penchant for puns, a puerile humor (in the best sense of the term!) or who just needs a good belly laugh. The photos are equally spot-on and genuinely gorgeous.I received my copy as a present, but just bought two more to give as holiday gifts. I am pretty darn sure they will keep the recipients laughing into the new year and beyond.
