About the Author
First catching a screening of Tremors on BBC One in the early 1990s, Jonathan Melville has closely followed the goings on in Perfection, Nevada, ever since.
Long before the internet allowed fans to read about the production of their favourite movies from concept to completion, Melville relied on frequent visits to the video store to discover the latest releases, stumbling across Tremors 2: Aftershocks in a Blockbuster just outside Toronto in 1996, before stumbling across the sequels as they were released.
As a freelance film journalist for UK science fiction magazine SFX, Melville was able to pitch a 21st anniversary feature on Tremors for a 2011 article, subsequently deciding to devote an entire book to the subject.
The result is the first in-depth look at the Tremors franchise, including Tremors, Tremors 2: Aftershocks, Tremors 3: Back to Perfection, Tremors 4: The Legend Begins, Tremors: The Series and Tremors 5: Bloodlines.
This movie reference guide has not only been written for horror fans but for anyone with an interest in cinema and Hollywood filmmaking and the direct-to-video industry.
It looks at the background of Tremors creators S.S. A must for Tremors fans and those who would like to know about how Hollywood works By Amazon Customer Seeking Perfection by Jonathan MelvilleI received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Seeking Perfection is a must for fans of the Tremors movies & TV show. The book outlines how the original idea developed, how it evolved as its creative team developed and traces how Hollywood works its, sometimes dysfunctional, magic. The book is based upon new interviews with the participants and various other materials and is a fascinating look behind the curtain It covers all of the movies up to, and including, Tremors 5; however, as the 5th installment has not, yet, been released the information is minimal. The only two things not covered in the book were the reports that the monsters were redesigned because of an unfortunate resemblance to a part of the male anatomy. I enquired with the author and none of his sources had mentioned the story and that certainly justifies the exclusion. The book also makes no mention of the fan film Tremors: On New Ground” of which only a few scenes were ever filmed and the, “New Ground,” of the title being the United Kingdom. I would have liked to have seen, at least, a mention of the fan film, but its omission is not a major point. The book is a well written and kept my interest from start to finish; in fact, the book kept my attention so well that I realized it was 7:30 AM and I had read through the night. American readers might want to note the use of British spellings, such as, “coulor,” are not typos. I recommend the book for fans of the series and plan on buying a hardcopy soon.

For those fans of the Friday the 13th franchise, you will certainly know of Crystal Lake Memories - the definitive guide on all things Friday the 13th and looked upon as a gold standard of horror film franchise retrospectives. Seeking Perfection seeks (no pun intended) to recreate that level of love and detail for the Tremors franchise and, for the most part, succeeds. This book was an absolute joy to read. I turned the pages eagerly, constantly learning things I had never known and often found myself surprised at how much time had past as I delved deeper into the production of some of my favorite movies. This book is an absolute must buy for any fan of the Tremors franchise and was clearly written as a gift for the fans by a fan, author Jonathan Melville. Though a familiarity with the franchise certainly adds a lot to the reading experience, this book would be a wonderful read for anyone, including non-fans, interested in the evolution of a small but unique franchise in the large machine that is the Hollywood studio system and how such a journey affects both the content and its creators. I was constantly shocked by how much a few dedicated people were able to pull off with increasingly smaller budgets and shrinking studio support. My hope is that this book serves not only to give fans of the franchise a new perspective on some of their favorite films, but that it serves to reignite a general interest in Tremors and to draw a new wave of fans to these cult classics. If you love these films, or filmmaking in general, you owe it to yourself to read this book!Further Detail:The book details the Hollywood history of Tremors franchise writers Brent Maddock and S.S. Wilson from their first meeting at film school through inking their deal with Universal to produce the original film. From there, the book spends many chapters recounting the entire production of the first film, with cast and crew (including Kevin Bacon) speaking about their thoughts and experiences during that time. In addition, a few (previously unseen) behind the scenes photos give a unique look into the creation of many of the film's classic sets. The second half of the book focuses on the franchise's move into the world direct-to-DVD releases and television, with each subsequent movie (and the series) getting its own fairly detailed chapter. Additionally, an entire chapter is devoted to stories and information about the series broken down by individual episode. The book ends with a recounting of the chain of events leading up to the production of the soon-to-be-released Tremors 5: Bloodlines and a brief franchise retrospective from key cast and crew. While it would have been nice for the chapters on later films to get into as much detail as the ones on the first (which saw each step of the filmmaking process getting its own chapter, as opposed to the one movie/one chapter format of the sequels), they are by no means short or lacking in information. Additionally, had this book gotten a later release, it would have been able to talk more fully on the 5th film rather than just covering the limited pre-release information. Of course, a later release would have also caused the book to miss releasing during the 25th anniversary of the first film, so the decision is understandable (and could be somewhat rectified with new chapters on the finished 5th film added into the digital editions post-release). Overall, these are but minor nitpicks in what is otherwise a very well written, and fun to read, book detailing the history of Universal's last great monster movie franchise. To the author, I can only paraphrase Tremors' very own Melvin in saying, "Way to go, dude!"
4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. It's all about Perfection By Dale I have watched and enjoyed all the Tremors movies and the TV series. When I heard a book was coming out about the movies and the series I was hopeful that it would do the Tremors world justice. Well, it not only does it justice it goes above and beyond my expectations. There is even a little look into the possibility of Tremors 5. If you liked the movies I think you will enjoy the book. If you haven't watched the movies or the series you should still enjoy the book with it's look into the film-making world.
