About the Author I am a woman, a surgeon, and a teacher of surgeons. I graduated from New York University College of Medicine in 1976 and completed my surgical residency there in 1981. I was one of the last physicians to train in the "old" Bellevue Hospital. At that time, very few women entered general surgery. I have spent my life in academic surgery, operating and teaching others the science and art of surgery. When I was appointed Head of the Department of Surgery at the University of Iowa in 1995, I was the second woman in the history of American Surgery to attain such a position. My textbooks all share the goal of teaching surgery in clear, lucid language. My most recent books, "A Few Small Moments" and "Beachcombings", are short story collections. I live in Iowa City with my husband.

A surgeon's guide for young professionals By Mary Elizabeth Florio Carol Scott-Conner’s book, "Medical Writing", is a comprehensive, well-organized and easy toread treatise. Her ideas are presented in a detailed, logical series.Her clarity of thinking and herdescriptions of the difficulties and labor of writing are both impressive and especially useful for any young professional in the field.

As a journalism professor, I'm intrigued at the similarities between the process of communications and medical research and publishing, and I think students in a wide variety of disciplines would benefit from Scott-Conner's advice. She's generous indeed for sharing details big and small. Before you write that paper or consider that proposal, read this helpful book.
