Whether you are an expert on this topic or a novice, Fleetwood describes complex ideas in an interesting and easy to follow fashion. Usually, I really struggle to read books that offer such depth on the go as I usually get distracted. However, as I read this book on the subway, it enhanced my experience of reading as I saw a young black boy in a hooded sweatshirt and was contemplating the Trayvon Martin chapter, for example. Even as I write this in a local Brooklyn coffee shop, I can't help but listen to "Stop In the Name of Love" and think that the song has so much more meaning to me as I remember the chapter on Diana Ross and think of her as an icon and again as an natural woman - without the songs, photographs, wigs and costumes.

Such an important book at such a crucial time By Chicago Reader Yet again Nicole Fleetwood offers a compelling and undoubtedly adroit analysis of the junctures of U.S. visual culture and discourses of Blackness. Though the book is compact, it is packed with depth and complexity. For example, Fleetwood lingers in the more difficult moments--those rife with affective energies--when she discusses the complex ways in which Trayvon Martin's death (at the hands of George Zimmerman) has become iconic in U.S. visual culture. Moreover, the book asks us to think systematically and critically about visual culture, blackness, and American public culture vis-a-vis a host of figures (i.e., Diana Ross, Serena Williams, Lebron James, etc). Throughout the text, Fleetwood is interested in the question of: "how do racial iconic images become part of the story that Americans tell each other and the world about the unfolding of nation and the possibility of democracy"? This question is key, especially in our current public milieu, because it calls into question the very complicated notion of "democracy" and, in so doing, asks us to consider those bodies living in a state of vulnerable democracy. Ultimately, the book is very thought-provoking and written with clarity so that various audiences could read and understand some of the ideas and issues Fleetwood is grappling with it. Read it!

Psychoanalysis--poetry and prayer By Nora Swan-Foster, ATR-BC, NCPsyA Free and expressive writing but to the point and the clinical examples are alive. Not stodgy and perfectly designed, but fluid, like real life, real sessions, real pauses and images, and real moments of meaning. Thoughtful and caring. Love. I feel as though I am in his office while reading this book--listening to him, talking with him…in conversation...it's a successful book because it expresses the moment, brings one into the moments of discovery and the sacredness of feelings, senses….and much more.

By Stewart Morton It’s hard to know where to begin with this book, Image, Sense, Infinities and Everyday Life. There is so much. “Approaching eighty, I often feel on the verge of beginning” says Michael Eigen, and as you read you get the sense of how true this feels. “Living each day, each moment as the first”, Eigen speaks of the unknown, “the infinities of emotional life” of “nameless grace and terror’ and how “impassable and impossible become avenues of change”. One feels Wilfred Bion’s encouragement to the forty year old Eigen “to begin the nasty business of being yourself”, coming through. “An invitation that does not die. As if beginning becomes a place one enters, lives from, explores”.Here also, is a sense of the hard fought fullness and promise of emotional life, “to feel unashamed to have a psyche”, its beauty and joy. But also the courage and integrity needed to suffer one’s emotional life, for as Eigen says, “to come to life is to risk trauma that led to psychic death in the first place”.Image, Sense, Infinities, and Everyday Life is a great book. I feel the same way about it, as Eigen does about a Marion Milner book he reviews in Appendix Two: “you feel the book could go on and on. And you are one of the vehicles for it to go on and on in your own feel for life”.

By Marilyn Thompson Glow-Head Tells All: Tall Tales Of A Typical Maine Family by Lee Wilson is a wonderfully funny book filled the antics of a small boy and his family. I was pulled in and even was reminded of my own childhood, which paralleled many of the situations in this book. Lee writes in such a way you almost feel you were there as each event happens, and honestly you wish you had been. I found myself laughing so hard that I would have to stop reading long enough to wipe the tears from my eyes to be able to continue reading. After the first two chapters, I just kept a box of tissues by my side in order to quickly stay with the story. It is a fast-paced read and Lee has some unique phrases that will stick with me forever. I would love to see this as a tv series or book!!!

A qwirking quick witted set of stories that will be sure to amuse you and leave you laughing By Dana This book is full of fun and lighted heart stories remembered by a seven year old mostly about his father and adventures that took place. It is a set of short stories that will sure leaving laughing and the authors quick wit and amusing gift for story gabbing. The artistic approach taken is unique and wonderful. They have a way with words that makes everything flow together beautifully. For something different or just to get your mind off something, this is for sure the book for you. It is full of laughs and will make you feel like you are right there in the mountains of Maine and riding around in the powder blue sedan fighting with your siblings.

By Tom Gause The author reveals several pleasant stories of his father, told from the point of view of a seven year old boy. They're pleasant, nostalgic stories; fun little romps down memory lane. All in all, each story is a pleasant little pick-me-up when I just need to get away from it all.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Great Coloring Book! By Jamie L. Baumann I am shocked that this book doesn't have any reviews yet. It is quite amazing. I love the range of designs in this book. There are large murals of Aztec/Maya characters, floral patterns, animals, temples, birds, geometric patterns. It really offers a wide range of images. Which is nice. After coloring the foliage-based books by Johanna Basford, I was relieved to be able to color something besides flowers and leaves. Don't take that wrong. I LOVE HER BOOKS! But sometimes you need something different/new. This book is softcover, BUT the front and back covers do have a hard, cardboard composite cover on them. IT is kind of hard to explain. Only the binding isn't reinforced. They probably did this so that you could easily open the book. You also don't have designs going through the crease, which is GREAT. I hate it when I can't color into the binding.

By Kathleen Hobel The art work is superb, BUT, for the price of the book I would expect one sided pages!Most of the main pictures are backed by patterned work, but some are backed by another great picture.If you color in anything other than colored pencils you will have bleed-through!

The best book that I've purchased so far By M Mirandy The best book that I've purchased so far. the detailed pictures are printed on nice paper that doesn't bleed through. The hard back cover gives you the incentive to take your time and do the best you can on every page so you can keep it on the shelf.

Excellent historical review By David Horn While I would never presume - as some reviewers might - to misstate what is said in this classic volume and then presume to suggest that "now you don't need to read the book," I will say that this is an excellent edition of a classic work. All who have any interest in the history of Darwinian evolution and particularly the historical views of the evolution of man will find this fascinating reading, particularly if the context can be juxtaposed with what has been discovered since Darwin's time. Of course, times have changed, our hopefully less euro-centric views have been altered and there has been considerable progress through the generations since the original publication by Darwin, and that makes the progress of human knowledge all the more fascinating, as well as the insight Darwin obviously possessed in his day. This one's a "must-read" for anyone interested in the history of science.

A Great Read, but Not for Everyone By InquiringMind A truly outstanding read!I've kept The Descent of Man on my book shelf for over 30 years, unread. I was always too busy to justify the time required to do it justice. Now that I'm writing a dissertation in the History and Philosophy of Science I had the excuse I always lacked for tackling this monumental work. I'm glad I waited.Years as a practicing biologist and teacher have taught me the value of perspective. This is not a book that will teach you the details of human evolution. Read something recent in biological anthropology if that is what you are after. If you struggle with the convoluted sentence structure and wordiness of Victorian prose, this is certainly not the book for you. Try Harry Potter or Curious George instead.I always enjoy reading the negative reviews of books written on controversial topics just to see how many people actually review the subject matter rather than the book. I find it hysterical that 6 of the 7 negative reviews listed here were written by two fundamentalists and the seventh one was so tongue-in-cheek I'd give his review 5-starts just for fun. I found all but one of these negative reviews very predictable, and irrelevant.The Descent needs to be read by anyone interested in what Darwin thought and dared to publically declare. It should not, however, be read outside the context of his letters, and the social milieu in which he lived. It is most certainly anchored in a different age yet bridges that age to our own. Evolution is the cornerstone of all modern biology. Darwin's astonishing synthesis and daring predictions continue to be tested, refined, and corroborated. Seeing "only in a glass darkly," he nonetheless illuminated so much that is correct in human evolutionary history. Even thoughs who critisize his quaint use of terms do so from a perspective elevated by his work. I found his writing prescient in light of the bushiness displayed in hominin fossils.If you need a context then read Janet Browne's seminal two-volume Darwin biography. If you need adventure and a Darwinian primer, then read Voyage of the Beagle. But don't stop reading Darwin till you've read this book. The Origin is incomplete without it.

By Shirley Schwartz This book takes off where "Origin of the Species" leaves off. In Origin, Darwin does not present his hypotheses on the origin of man, but in this book he states categorically that the human race is descended from earlier species of apes, which were descended from much more primitive life forms. The book is the work of a naturalist, and it is surprising how perceptive Darwin was, considering that this book was written in 1871. It faced a storm of rejection and tremendous furor. The book caused a storm of controversy throughout the entire world. Darwin sets out his facts as dispassionately as possible, but that did not stop many nations from banning the work. Darwin also clearly states in this important work that man is continuing to evolve. In this book Darwin states that the two main forms of selection that helped to shape the animals and humans the most through time are the theories of natural selection and sexual selection, and he explains the difference between these two often throughout the book. Even though the book is actually quite readable, I found it not an easy book to read. Even now these theories seem too much to be believed in some spots, but I do not argue at all with Darwin's theory. It is in fact the only way that the human race could have evolved. Definitely a must-read for anyone interested in "ground-breaking" literature.

From School Library Journal PreSchool-Grade 1—Little Blue Truck rides in rhyme again, this time carrying crates of lettuce to a metropolitan market. His bug-eyed headlights show appreciation for the city views, as well as discomfort when the faster-paced vehicles harass him. From a double-decker bus to the mayor's limousine, traffic irritably jams into a crunch intensified by the limo engine's demise. The portly, gray-haired mayor uses Little Blue as a podium, instructing citizens to follow the truck's advice to travel "one at a time." The resulting courtesy creates a smooth flow, even when a marching band joins the line. Everyone cheers for the little truck, who leads the way with the mayor as his passenger. McElmurry's gouache scenes are spot-on. Simple compositions in calming indigo and cream in the country starkly contrast with the jam-packed city scenes where a crush of buildings barely shows the sky. The urbanites are a rich mix of ethnicity and purpose: coffee drinkers, construction workers, dog walkers, briefcase carriers, they all pound the pavement. 60 of 62 people found the following review helpful. Just OK By T. Yule I bought this book for my son as soon as it came out because we have the first Little Blue Truck book and love it. I think this one falls short. It is not half as charming as the first and really a little boring to read. After we read the first book my son was reading along with us (as best he could at 2 1/2) and doing all the animal sounds. This one he doesn't even want to pick up a 2nd time. The illustrations are still nice and the moral is OK, but overall it's about grumpy city cars and doesn't have the same cute flow as the first. I'd pass.

In a sense, I agree-- the moral's not as profound and the words aren't quite as fun to read without animal sounds. That said, my son (a young toddler) adores this book. He's the sort of boy who waves at buses and trucks, loves to see heavy machinery at work, and constantly spins the wheels on his toys. Once we got this book, with its gorgeous pictures of skyscrapers (reminiscent of New York City) and different kinds of vehicles, my son literally threw the first book aside. His favorite page shows a traffic jam--go figure. In sum, my son and I like this book, but how much your child enjoys it will depend on his interests.

This is a perfect guide for both kids who love the arts and who are intimidated by creativity or feel they are not good at being creative. It's a simple, accessible, and fun book that really brings light to the joy of songwriting and storytelling. My sister is a teacher and is planning on utilizing it in her classroom this year with her students during the creative writing module as well to help emphasize how many familiar ways there are to use your imagination. Bring the music program to you!

He has written two songs already. He just sang them to me on Skype. It's so much fun to watch his creativity bubble up. This is a perfect gift for any creative kid!

Oh there's drama and romance to get you excited but the mystery part I simply found intriguing. Didn't think there were intrigue, I bet? Oh one part got me giggling, Where do you start a divorce? GOOGLE it! Andrea's move was nothing but smooth, just ask Ryan after colliding with each other. Now who flirted with whom here? A YouTube video and than it begins, welcome to L.A. Wow the story moved quickly and had all the trapping of Andrea's escapades that kept me entertained indeed. The author wrote it with so much enthusiasm that you wanted to keep on reading. Even as a non-native of "LA" (only a visitor), it was so cool to be able to relate to the various landmarks the author referred to. It had just enough spice to keep you going in the romance department, just enough mystery to keep you guessing and just enough fun little quips to keep you giggling throughout. I can certainly relate to "Andrea's" life choices and it was fun to see mine in writing. The book was a quick, easy read and one that you can go back and read again and again. Looking forward to hearing more from this new author.

Most images are too abstract for my tastes and do not even resemble butterflies. I'm having buyers remorse on this one. The images are on one side only (blank backs). Attached images are examples of what you'll find in this book. Please excuse the cell phone quality.

The pictures are a bit abstract, but after coloring one in I feel like an artist. I think my picture is almost as good as the ones on the back.I had also been a bit confused since the book only has pictures on one side of each page. Now that I get around to hanging my masterpiece I realize that not having my two favorite designs back to back is actually a feature.

Puppy Birthday to You is a Little Golden Book about the Paw Patrol team planning a surprise birthday party for Chase. The power goes out while they are trying to bake a cake and the pups go out to fix the problem. They discover that the windmill is broken so Marshall, Rocky, and Ryder set about fixing it so that it can spin and produce electricity. Chase directs traffic while the power is out and Skye, Zuma, Rubble, and Katie set up Chase's surprise party. The Paw Patrol saves the day by getting the power back on and still manage to surprise Chase for his birthday. My son enjoys showing us pictures in the book and telling us about his favorite characters and the things that they do. I love it when a book can get my little ones excited about reading!

Puppy Birthday to You; another classic Golden Book Adaptation By outwest I bought this for my 4 yr old son who has been watching Paw Patrol for quite awhile and is a huge fan. Like with any Golden Book adaptation, the story is well done but simple enough for short attention spans, is well illustrated, and really makes the Paw Patrol characters shine. The story length is just right with nice vivid color illustration with the classic gold "Little Golden Books" binding.Another great hit in the Golden Book lineup of Paw Patrol books, and one that little ones will love to read over and over (which is already happening here!) Go Paw Patrol!

This was a must have for my son’s Paw Patrol themed Birthday! He just turned 3 and is CRAZY about Paw Patrol! He wants to read this story every night. On the back of the book there are other Paw Patrol stories that he points to and says “we need to get these stories too!”The quality of the book is just like any other Little Golden book! Well binded, cardboard cover with paper pages. At 3 years old, my son still tears things up when left in his bedroom unsupervised. For that reason we keep this book where he can’t get to it. As long as we continue to do so, I expect this book to last many years!
