Review The contributors link the history and significance of Native American mascots to ongoing struggles for social justice. Rejecting the idea that mascots are limited to sporting events, the authors persuasively argue that they are instead representative of dominant attitudes that both distance and dehumanize Native people. Hardly seeing mascots as an "honor," the authors trace how Native American mascots are based on an idea of a savage male opponent that will be vilified and humiliated by opposing teams. The book is aimed squarely at those working in higher education, for a school that endorses inaccurate, ahistorical images of Native Americans is hardly a safe space for Native students. The text compiles speeches, articles, policies, and resolutions that have been previously published, usually for a specific targeted audience. The value of this text is that it details both the scope and diversity of the opposition to Native American sports mascots. Oriented toward directing action on the part of readers to both educate and resist, the book can be viewed as a supplement to other sources, such as the Jay Rosenstein film In Whose Honor? (1997). By Marco Buendia This book, published some time after the volume level had subsided, is a collection of essays and documents relating to the foolish custom of naming sports teams after American Indian tribes and cultural memes, some of them imaginary, associated with sometimes imaginary tribes.Some of the documents are legislative bills and resolutions, statements by various tribal councils, such organizations acting as amici like the NAACP, etc. but most are academic or quasi academic blabbering. All of the latter are polemical in nature, but all are on one side: against the use of these Indian monikers.It's hard for a rational person to understand:A) why any of this matters to anyone, andB) why, once they realize that someone is bothered by it, sports teams (at schools, mostly) continue(d) to use these monikers.I can only attribute the resistance to dropping these monikers such as "Redskins" or "Illini" or "Noble Savages" or whatever to the deep stupidity of sports team members, coaches, sports spectators, alumni and school boards. I have spent more time on college campuses than I care to remember and can only see organized extramurally competing sports as a place to put the people who couldn't otherwise get a place in such admittedly unimpressive entities as state & private universities in America. Perhaps, if these people, when in color-coded drag, kicking & whacking at balls and beating each other up, can't get by without monikers, they should use such terms as "oafs", "apes" or "cretins".I would have given this book five stars for its apparent usefulness to those writing papers on this controversy, now fading into pop history, but I subtracted the one because it's a frightful bore and I can't help thinking that anyone who fusses about it is a fool.
