A Very Different Kind of Film Festival By Michele van Gobes Talking to Skeletons is the companion book to Radiologists at Work: Saving Lives with the Lights Off. It is the true story of Jay, a brilliant, driven Radiologist who works deep in the bowels of a hospital, reading films and dictating reports at blinding speed using a very precise vocabulary so there will be no ambiguity to the Surgeon receiving his report. During the course of his 13+ hour shifts, he dashes out of his office to give Surgeons additional, on site assistance as they evaluate their patients, many who are admitted through the Emergency Room. While the technology has become increasing sophisticated, scans still need to be interpreted. Jay has to look at many images at one time, in most cases taking those "slices" and mentally reorganizing them to get the true picture of the patient's status, dictating all the while. So, he is simultaneously reading as many or maybe even more than 24 images at a time on his light board (as quickly as he reads them, new film is loaded and the screen rotates) dictating as he reads the film, racing out of his "dark room" to assist colleagues, and every once in a blue moon, catching a break . As demonstrated in Talking to Skeletons, Jay, the Radiologist is the Surgeon's guide to understanding the current condition of the patient, and what approach the Surgeon needs to consider with regard to the actual surgery. He is in high demand due to his expertise, and self imposes even higher standards for himself. As the book unfolds, we understand not only what is going on in Jay's head, how he processes much of the sadness and sickness that he sees, and the brilliant, driven, compassionate professional with a very human side that he is. These books do not necessarily need to be read in order, however I think you appreciate Jay even more if you read this one second. BONUS: I just discovered that they come in a boxed set, priced accordingly, so there is no reason not to buy both.

Marvelling at Medicine By Kay Carrasco As only she can, Carolyn Jourdan once again takes her readers along as she explores another aspect of the medical world, this time into the specialty of Radiology as practiced in a major hospital. She shadows Jay as he works, sometimes seated for hours as film after film glows from the huge lightboard; at others, she follows him on wild, breathless dashes to the neonatal unit or the surgical suites. While she writes without flinching at what she sees, it is never gory or sensationalized. Jordan's greatest talent, finding the humanity, even at times the deeply spiritual in the suffering she witnesses, is realized here in prose that is beautiful, moving, often stunning, and occasionally humorous. Medicine isn't magic--it is science, it is discipline, it is incredibly hard work--yet in the hands of Carolyn Jourdan's unique talent for writing about it, it becomes a nearly magical experience for the reader. Open this book and walk into a place of marvel. You will long remember the journey.

They are special people who do a difficult job. They see the sometimes devastating results of illness or injury, in infants to the aged and infirm. That kind of work has to take a toll on a person, both mentally and physically. Radiologists sit or stand for hours in a dark room and must make quick judgements and decisions that may dramatically impact patients' lives. They know that if they make a mistake it can have catastrophic results. They are brave and gutsy people. This book is not only interesting and educational, it is also very poignant. It makes me aware, yet again, just how precious and tenuous our brief lives are. Thank you to Carolyn Jourdan for another excellent read.
