Nice Compilation of Interviews By Talvi In As If!, author Jen Chaney has compiled years worth of interviews/anecdotes/recollections about the movie Clueless and printed them verbatim. As breezy as the film itself, this is an easy read, easily consumed in two hours or so. And like the film, it is a friendly read with no eye opening or revelatory tidbits to be found (most of the cast/crew say it was a relatively easy shoot).The book is broken down into three parts: casting/preproduction/concept, filming, and then post production/box office/legacy. Since most of the book involves quotes or information copied directly from interviews or production notes, the author doesn't extrapolate, interpret, or otherwise drone on about the information presented.As expected, most of the recollections are positive or about solving problems such as rainy weather, Silvertstone's intensive work schedule (she's in nearly every scene), or shooting at a school while it is in session. Of all the interviews, only Elisa Donovan, who played rival Amber in the movie, offers any kind of pithy commentary and I greatly looked forward to reading her interviews as a result. But even then, you have to read between the lines to see it.Locals to Los Angeles (or those who want a 'Clueless' tour while visiting the city) will appreciate that all site locations are given and can be visited. From the Giant clown signed parking lot Cher is abandoned by Elton (it's still there!) to the Van Nuys High school masquerading as a Beverly Hills elite educational establishment. Some locations were challenging (e.g., the 'bathroom' at the Val party scene) while others serendipitously fell into place (the Horowitz mansion).The fashion is discussed at length by the actors and costume designer Mona May (who had to operate under a tight budget). Casting choices (those who were considered, whether they read or not) also produced some amusing anecdotes. And the origins of many of the phrases - from 'Keeping it real!' to "surfing the crimson wave' are discussed. But like the film, much of As If! is really about Alicia Silverstone and how the film's ultimate success really resulted from her quirky personality.So while there are few witty bon mots or trenchant insights to be found in the book, it was interesting to see all that went into making the movie. I especially appreciated that the author did not spend chapters gushing about how Clueless was the greatest movie ever and that the actors/crew were so gifted as to be sainted. As If! is a very straightforward account of the filming of a beloved teen classic. See the movie again right before reading the book to get the most from the experience. By N8PM Provides some little bits of information that are fun to find out - like where the costumes are now etc. However, lots of rambling in the book, coupled with sections (vs. chapter breakdowns) make it a bit longer and "dragging" to read than it probably could have been. Too much time on interviews spent with minor role players (for example, the mighty mighty boss tones seem to contribute as much as Alicia Silverstone). It seemed to focus on individual feelings more than anything...and also technical show-biz stuff that was really of no interest to me. Most depressingly though, was that Alicia Silverstone- the character we all love, seemed to offer no interesting quotes or passion about much of anything, leading me to think that she is probably not very cool in real life. Some quotes alluded to that if you read very closely between the lines. Total Bummer!

Jones I have an unfortunate habit of falling in love with movies and books from before I was born, to say nothing of the fictional people residing therein. “Clueless” is one of those movies. It’s outdated, shallow, and completely ridiculous – but it’s also a relevant story to today’s high schoolers, a thoughtful look at a spoiled girly-girl with some depth, and a sly parody of Beverly Hills partying and teen drama as well as being the best Jane Austen adaptation no one knows is a Jane Austen adaptation. I can’t believe that it’s already twenty years old, or that a book, “As If,” was written about what it was like to make this now-cult classic. I had to read it, of course, and I was quite pleased that the author managed to cobble quotes and anecdotes from nearly everyone involved in the making of “Clueless” into a cohesive and entertaining whole. Maybe, like Cary Elwes’s “As You Wish,” my enjoyment of the book stemmed more from my love of the movie than anything to do with the actual book, but that’s not really a bad thing.If you haven’t seen “Clueless,” or at least read “Emma,” then get out of here. I don’t mean to be rude; it’s for your own good. This book won’t mean anything to you anyway. If you are familiar with “Clueless,” then great, because you’ll finally get to hear the scoop on what it took to get this movie into production, or how they found all the actors, or which actors were turned down for the parts and went on to be pretty famous. You’ll hear how all the lingo got into the movie – some of it was made up, but a lot of it came from director Amy Heckerling’s slang dictionary and/or experience. And you’ll hear some random stuff too – like, did you know that the barrette Cher wears after the warehouse party was also in “She’s the Man,” or that Amanda Bynes screamed like a little girl when she found out what movie it was originally from? Or that a couple met on the set of “Clueless” as extras and got engaged years later? Or that even several Jane Austen scholars cite this movie as one of the best-ever versions of Austen’s novels?Besides telling us all these juicy tidbits, the book is just well done. The author’s voice, when it appears, is fun and bouncy without gushing or trying too hard to be hip. I just wish there was a little more of it. This is, more than anything, a book of quotes strung together by the many people that worked on “Clueless.” Although I loved hearing everyone’s POV (and it’s pretty remarkable that even the guy who robbed Cher at the gas station and the Messiah of the DMV are in the book), I sometimes wished the book would be more of a book and less of a screenplay.But you know, that’s okay, because it’s about a movie, after all. A pretty good movie that’s not just fun and froth, though it does have plenty of that. I recommend “As If” to die-hard “Clueless” fans as a way to relive their favorite scenes – and maybe even remind them that they need to watch this iconic 90s classic just one more time. Or two, or four. Whatever it takes.
