9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Good when it could have been great By Shawn P. Cooke "Crooked" has a novel and refreshing conceit. What if Nixon, instead of being the shame of the American presidency, was instead the secret savior of the nation, who sacrificed his reputation to preserve us from the great Lovecraftian horror of the Cold War? The execution, unfortunately, was not sufficient to elevate the book from the gee-whiz factor of its premise into the ranks of the great works of alternative history.Grossman's work suffers from an odd front-loading. The bulk of the book takes place during his early political career, as a Congressman, Senator, and Vice President in the Eisenhower White House. Though relevant, and full of the sort of creepy rising action that you might expect from a book that dips into the Lovecraftian mythos, these sections feel like a delay of the payoff we were promised from the excellent opening chapters.When that payoff arrives, however, it is rushed. I had been hoping to see Nixon as the inheritor of the magic inherent in the American executive branch. He is, though not in the way a reader might have expected after the first chapter. I was hoping for occult adventures, after the style of Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter. Instead, we orbit on the fringes of an interesting story without ever landing.By the end, I felt more frustrated than entertained. I was frustrated not at the book but at Grossman, who obviously has the writing chops to tell an engaging story, but chose to overload the appetizers and skimp on the main course. As I turned the last page, I was left with the distinct impression of having read the outline of an excellent book.That's not to say that I found nothing to enjoy. Grossman succeeds extremely well at the atmospherics, painting a picture of existential dread mixed with a subtext of horror. And yet, he brought humor into the story in just the right places. His characterization is superb. We get to know Nixon extremely well, and witness his marital struggles with Pat. His relationship with Arkady and Tatiana is central to the book - perhaps too central? - but we are left with a feeling of them as real characters doing their best in an unreal world.At the end of the day, "Crooked" is a taste of alternate history, a book that requires that much of the depth be supplied by the reader. Its strength is the ability to hint at a much larger and more encompassing story than what is told; its weakness is the inability to tell enough of that story to satisfy.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Nice try but By fkobelmont I thought the book was well written and an interesting look at Nixonian history from Nixon's point of view. However, it fell a little flat with the concept of him fighting supernatural powers, as they were never really fully developed or felt like a real threat to me. In fact, it was the weakest part of the book. I kept expecting something bigger to happen but it never did. It was a clever premise but not much more.

From the foreword: My friend Rich wrote a book. Until he did, I wasn't sure he even had a command of the English language, what with him being born in Canada* and all, and the hockey thing. I hear you get hit in the face a lot. So imagine my surprise when he started posting some of these Graham Cracks for his Facebook friends to proofread... and laugh at, and we did. They were genuinely funny. And some of them were both wise and funny. A few were even true and funny, though to protect his pride, I won't tell you which those are. From the time I first met him I recognized that Rich Graham was a unique character: Intelligent, witty, soulful; a deep thinker, a horrible dresser, and the kind of real friend his own friends can count on to come through for them. But to actually sell a book of funny, one has to be creative as well, and damned if he wasn’t. I started collecting my favorites from his very first posts, and was amazed at how clever many of them were. Reading them made me realize my friend Rich was practically brilliant; definitely way smarter than he looked. So instead of wincing inwardly when he said he was going to publish them, as one usually does when a friend announces he is about to make a horrible mistake, I was pleased for him and actually thought it was a great idea. So if you don’t like this book, it’s probably my fault. While I’m being honest, I should also tell you that I think he mostly wrote it to help him pick up girls, and I only agreed to write this foreword so I could get a bunch of free copies to show off to my family. Rich wanted it to be at least 800 words long, but I’ve run out of things to say, so just buy this book. You won’t regret it, especially when you hear laughter coming from your guest bathroom, where you stashed it so your friends could read it while they were otherwise occupied. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This book is freaking funny! By Erik E I read through this in about an hour because once I started rolling it was hard to stop. There are a lot of funny punch lines and quirky commentary that range from making you chuckle to actually laughing out loud. And you'd think there isn't much reuse value from a book like this, but it has found a home under our glass top coffee table. I cannot tell you how many times a guest has picked it up and ended up laughing at a random line from the book. It's started some really funny and interesting conversations! Lol.

Being funny is a serious business By Amazon Customer Being funny is a serious business, and Rich Graham gets to demonstrate that making people laugh is just as valid and fulfilling a life choice as curing diseases or educating the masses or studying history, philosophy, economics. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a good laugh and/or needs to take a step back and relax. Happy to own such a phenomenal piece of American literature.

By Heather UPDATE: I need to add that I received a personal email that was filled with spite and hate from the seller (Ebookpro) saying I "killed [their] business." This further supports my initial and unedited review below.Bummer, I'm so saddened to have to write a negative review. So I'll start out that I am a full time executive, and when I first heard about Adult Coloring books to reduce stress, stimulate creativity, and to 'get away,' I was all in. So I was excited to get this free or at a discount to sample, so I finally try the adult coloring book craze! Sadly, this is a poorly made adult coloring book.They make a poor use of the white space and it's better suited for kids. First, the images are not inviting or stimulating in any way. They also have these odd descriptions/text under the images - this doesn't make sense for adults. Additionally, the printing itself is poorly done. Every image in my book was either askew/crooked/misaligned, or, unclean at the edges (the edges of the ink just fade away rather than being a crisp line). See photos for what I mean.Sadly, this cannot possibly hold a candle to the original and far superior coloring books that made the news. I ONLY have this Amazing Birds book, but have had my eye on the Secret Garden [[...]] - so I think I'll have to splurge and get the better book. I am NOT affiliated with any of these, or any coloring/book company in any way. But I am honestly planning on getting the Secret Garden book... even though it's more costly, you get what you pay for.Sorry, but I have to provide my honest feedback. I rely on the feedback/reviews of others for my own purchases, and hope this helps others. If my review has helped, please let me know by voting "HELPFUL." Lastly, I will note, this company has received some unfairly negative reviews from people who bought the Ebook - which, duh, they cannot color. I've not tested, downloaded or other wised used the Kindle version. I understand why people might be concerned about that version so I wanted to make sure you aware that I've not reviewed that version. That being said the back is misprinted. Someone has printed the text on the back backwards. Around the outside of every image it looks like instead of cleanly cropping the image someone has blurred it to look like it's fading away. I don't care for this technique. It seems like something done by the publisher and not the artist. The quality of the artist's work looks slightly diminished by this production style.The interesting facts on the bottom of each page are okay. The quality of the facts varies from each page. I don't think they add or subtract from the quality of the book. What a great way to relax, unwind and feel like a kid again By bella Coloring is not just for kids and I've learned that it can be very relaxing and stress relieving to color as an adult. I've had a rough couple of weeks and this coloring book has been wonderful for taking my mind off things. It makes me feel like a kid again. Before you know it, you are in a better mood and feeling relaxed and calm again. And it's much cheaper than a therapist lol! I like that each page is blank on the back so you can tear them out if you'd like and not waste another one. The pictures are very nicely drawn and have enough detail work to make coloring really fun. To me it has a nice "hippie" vibe to it so it's right up my alley. I also like that there is a little fact about each bird on the pages. A few of the pictures could have been made a touch smaller so that none of it gets "cut off" but only a few are like that so it doesn't really affect how much I like it. I have been using markers with mine so if that is what you are using, I would recommend putting a piece of scrap paper under the picture you were working on so it doesn't bleed through. (I didn't do that with the first picture I colored and a little bit did bleed onto the next picture) All in all, this is a great way to relax and unwind and I will definitely buy more of them.I received this Amazing Birds Adult Coloring Book from Tali Carmi for free or at a discount in exchange for my honest review. Imagine my utter despondency when I turn to the "Fetish" (yes! yes!) section and find that there is nary a mention of garlic at all in this recipe. The whole essence of CK is garlic butter (GB), and there is no GB here at all. It is at best a rolled chicken nugget. There is no more to say! How can I trust the other recipes?
