In its second edition, this book takes a fresh approach to the study of sports, presenting key concepts such as socialization, economics, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, politics, the media and the role of sports in society. The authors offer a critical examination but highlight also the many positive aspects of sports. Each chapter concludes with a popular culture section, showing how films, television, video games, music and short stories have contributed to our understanding of sports' significance to our lives.

Other features include up-to-date information--such as statistics on player and owner salaries--and a look at recent controversies in sports, such as performance-enhancing drugs, domestic violence, online gambling and the growing concern over concussions and post-career health problems. The value of sports for people with physical disabilities and special needs is discussed, as well as the development of sports studies programs and the continuing importance of "sportsmanship." The final chapter explores how social media, as well as new forms of virtual reality and the prevalence of video gaming, are reshaping the concept of what constitutes a sport.

Fiction author Stephanie Haddad steps out of her comfort zone to talk openly and honestly about herself, her life, and her view on some regular old “life stuff.” This collection of 15 brief essays is designed for reflection and thought, but also just for fun. There’s also a bonus short story at the end—one a lot of parents should be able to relate to quite easily! Stephanie is not a health expert, life coach, or great thinker of her time—although that would be pretty fantastic. However, this book offers some of her thoughts, which will strike close to the heart for many women and mothers in particular.

By annie_0627 Fun, beautifully written essays on the every day life of a wife, mother, and author. I found this to be very relatable even though I'm not a wife or mother or author, and that's certainly an achievement on the author's part! I love that this was easy to read (each essay is pretty short) but always a witty and/or a powerful reflection on the human experience.

From a snicker to laughing out loud. As long as Madam and Eve can appear in newspapers, SA is still a democracy, although with a lot of things that should be better.

The Beach House Mystery (Samantha Wolf Mysteries Book 3), by Tara Ellis

Review Reader's Favorite...Four stars!****The Beach House Mystery by Tara Ellis is Book 3 of an on-going series, but it can be read on its own. This was a surprisingly good book, given the fact that it is written in present tense and I usually don't like novels written like that. The story follows two girls, Sam and her friend Ally, who visit a beach where Sam's father is restoring an old boat. What was supposed to be a good vacation on the sand and surf turns out to be a mystery that desperately needs to be solved. There is a lot going on: there is a sea monster, a mystery of the founder of the town, the lighthouse has a mystery of its own, and there is a ghost that is still looking for her husband. Needless to say, the two girls need help and they get it from Sam's brother Hunter and his friend John. Together, the foursome needs to solve these mysteries before something big happens. But with so many forces against them, can they do it?Boy, this was a roller coaster ride that I loved. Sam and Ally are such cool kids. The story reminded me a lot of many R.L. Stine books that I used to read all the time. The dialogues are great and the story is very invigorating. I really loved the fact that the story was more about the mystery. It was focused and that made it more entertaining. The characters were strong and very well-developed. Tara Ellis is a really good writer, and she knows what she is doing, so that made the experience even better.

From the Author Have you read the Amazon best selling book #1, The Mystery of Hollow Inn? Find out how it all starts! With a 5 star rating from Reader's Favorite, it's a story you're sure to enjoy!!**Read ALL of the books in the Samantha Wolf Mysteries:Book #1 - The Mystery of Hollow InnBook #2 - The Secret of Camp Whispering PinesBook #3 - The Beach House MysteryBook #4 - The Heiress of Covington RanchBook #5 - The Haunting of Eagle Creek Middle SchoolBook #6 - TBA (coming summer of 2016!)**Also in audiobook format:The Mystery of Hollow InnThe Secret of Camp Whispering Pine

About the Author Author Tara Ellis lives in a small, rural town in Washington State, set in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. She enjoys the quiet lifestyle with her husband, two teenage kids and several dogs. Tara was a firefighter/EMT (yes, you read that right) and worked in the medical field for many years, before committing herself to writing young adult and middle grade novels full-time after life threw the MS curve-ball at her. (she still dabbles in teaching CPR)

Not being familiar with US geography, I checked Google maps again to follow the intriguing coastal descriptions of Washington State and Oregon. Tara' Ellis' novels are definitely educational.Twelve-year-old Sam is a wonderful role model for middle-grade readers who are looking for exciting and intelligent mystery and adventure. She's such a resourceful, courageous and loyal character--very likeable. In 'The Beach House Mystery' once again she's joined by best friend and fellow sleuth, Ally. With the help of Sam's older brother, Hunter and his friend, John, the kids unite to solve a mystery that involves spooky night stuff on the beach including wailing voices, rolling fogs and an old lighthouse. The action ramps up when they meet their holiday neighbours and soon find themselves entangled with adult criminals.I especially enjoy the strong theme of friendship in the Sam Wolf Mysteries. The banter between the kids is natural and convincing. The stories are cosy and wholesome with just enough action, excitement and adventure to make them very suitable for middle grade readers.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A fun, fast paced middle grade mystery By cutelilinikika I absolutely love these middle grade mystery stories. I loved them when I was in that age group and I love them now. This one definitely did not disappoint.Sam and Ally are once again caught up in a mystery while visiting a beach house near where Sam's dad is overseeing the remodel of a boat. This time, they get their brothers John and Hunter involved. There's a lot of mystery surrounding a lighthouse and a legend about the founder of the town disappearing in the late 1800s and a sea monster and a ghost that haunts the waters, searching for her lost husband. All together it makes for an intriguing story. The ocean and lighthouses fascinate me, so I was excited for this book and I'm glad I read it. It's a fun mystery for anyone, not just middle grade readers. While it didn't detract from the story there were some minor editing problems throughout and in the first five or six chapters John and Hunter's names were mixed up which took me a minute to straighten out. Again, this didn't decrease my enjoyment, but be aware that you may run into this if you read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful story! By Amazon Customer I grew up on the Trixie Beldon and Nancy Drew books. This author is in the same league, but the stories are set in a more modern era. Kids nowadays will enjoy the author's inclusion of smart phones, texting, and similar understandings of how 12 year olds currently live. I like how the author respects that pre-teens and young teens are intelligent, yet still make good and bad choices, and creates characters that show this. Too many middle grade authors create characters this age that are still pretty dumb. The story also treats the reader as intelligent, allowing the reader to slowly figure out the mystery along with the characters of Sam and Ally. I'm in my 50's, but still love a good mystery. Love this author! I'll be reading the others in this series!

Disney was best noted as being the man who instilled the “Happily Ever After” into all little girls minds while growing up. Not only did he lie, but totally confused the heck out of Mia. When Mia met Ross, she thought nothing of his future lawyer title or the pink shirt he so proudly wore. A future lawyer was something she wasn't interested in, but his numerous attempts for her attention were adding up. A 48-hour date later and a few years in the bag, brought marriage, a home and happiness. As Mia presents her skewed version of Disney's “Happily Ever After” she also shares the truth behind her true Prince Charming and how regardless of ones faith, people will do anything even if living in a glass house. Not afraid to voice her opinion or the honest truth, Mia points out that true love is not dating her husband, nor committing adultery with him while her ring is still on her finger.

In this truthful, sometimes painful, sometimes funny book, Deana shows the reader what courage looks like and that not all happy endings end with a diamond ring and prince charming; rather your own two feet the courage to stand up for yourself. This should be a real message to young women today.

It does not have your typical happily ever after ending and thats what makes it so great bc it is real life. Sends a message to all women that you should never settle for less than you deserve and money does not buy happiness. Great book!

In her spirited, witty and vastly entertaining memoir, Helene Hanff recalls her ingenuous attempts to crash Broadway in the early forties as one of “the other 999.” Naive, nearsighted, frequently penniless but hopelessly stagestruck, she found her life governed by Flanagan’s Law: “No matter what happens to you, it’s unexpected.” Therefore, as a prize-winning Theatre Guild protégée with a brilliant future, Helene naturally found that all the producers who were going to produce her plays didn’t, and all the agents who were going to sell her plays couldn’t. Together with her best friend Maxine, an aspiring actress consigned to playing the comedy-ingénue in plays that regularly folded after five performances, she cultivated the “delicate, illegal art of getting everything for nothing”—from free seats to every Broadway show and neighborhood movie and borrowed outfits from Saks to voice lessons for Maxine and Greek lessons for Helene. To keep body and soul together until Broadway fame arrived, they devised an economic survival system that embraced such unlikely jobs as taking street-corner. Reviews — “Miss Hanff, having a good memory and a lively sense of humor, has composed a theater sketch that is realistic as well as hilarious....One of the most amusing recent theater books about the Broadway theater.”—Brooks Atkinson “A delightful book by an irrepressible author....What really lifts the book to a high level of entertainment is the sparkling humor. To describe the incidents wouldn’t do justice to the book’s charm which comes from the style of writing and Miss Hanff’s boundless optimism.”—Library Journal “A gay and entertaining book which also has substance.”—Boston Herald “Hilarious and highly successful. If you need cheering up, this is it. Here’s hoping Miss Hanff finds more failures to write books about.”—Columbus Dispatch

After watching '84 Charing Cross Road' I was enchanted with Miss Hanff's wit and humor, and needed more. After an arduous search, I found a used copy of 'Underfoot...' and read it in less than 2 days. I even found myself laughing aloud at parts, which greatly disturbed the people sitting next to me. Hanff's ability to laugh at herself and to extract the humor from any situation is addictive. The book begins with a note to the reader: 'Each year, hundreds of stagestruck kids arrive in New York determined to crash the theatre, firmly convinced they're destined to be famous Broadway stars or playwrights. One in a thousand turns out to be Noel Coward. This book is about life among the other 999. By one of them.' From there, Miss Hanff takes the reader on a tour of her adventures and experiences as a struggling playwright in an honest and spirited manner. I was left wishing that my life was as unpredictable and ironic as Miss Hanff's struggle to live her dreams.

She shares stories from her years as a struggling playwright in New York City; her good friend Maxine was a struggling actress. Practically penniless, they still managed to see first-run shows and movies regularly. How they did it is one of many memorable and funny tales.I couldn't help laughing at the merry-go-round of a Broadway agent shopping a play all over town. Ms. Hanff tells how 'Oklahoma!' was named (she was there). One of her many jobs involved speed-reading long novels; her take on Tolkein is slightly different than Peter Jackson's.I echo a previous reviewer's thought: this book would make a terrific film. 'Underfoot in Show Business' is a gem, a memoir full of magic and wit. Highly recommended.

By Anthony Kline I once had to read a bit of this book out to some strangers on a plane who wanted to know why I was laughing out loud and then we had champagne and it was a great flight and Miss Hanff had even more fans. The tears were running down our faces. [ For those of you who have read it already it was the bit about the funeral parlour].This book, like all of Miss Hanff's works, makes you feel great to be alive.I've come to love my native city more and more by seeing it through Miss Hanff's eyes.
