Explore the history behind the bubonic plague that left Europe reeling from one of the greatest losses in history The Black Death is the name most commonly given to the pandemic of bubonic plague that ravaged the medieval world in the late 1340s. From Central Asia, the plague swept through Europe, leaving millions of dead in its wake. Between a quarter and a third of Europe's population died, and in England the population fell from nearly six million to just over three million. Sean Martin looks at the origins of the disease and traces its terrible march through Europe from the Italian cities to the far-flung corners of Scandinavia. He describes contemporary responses to the plague and makes clear how helpless the medicine of the day was in the face of it. He examines the renewed persecution of the Jews, blamed by many Christians for the spread of the disease, and highlights the bizarre attempts by such groups as the Flagellants to ward off what they saw as the wrath of God.

ISBN 10:0-7858-2289-5, HC 158/131. Appendix 10 pgs. further reads 10 pgs., Index 6 pgs. 7" x 5".A scholarly treatise with an overtly easy read for enhanced understandability and readability to the non-scientific layperson, this book is perhaps an important one in understanding the more complex issues raised by the specter of epidemic and pandemic `plagues' which have wrought havoc on the Earth's populations and entire nations, cultures and religions since first recorded case in 430 BC. This book concentrates largely on the "Black Plague" which struck between 1328 and 1352, mainly years 1347 to 1349, but deals also with lesser plagues and some closely related pestilences whose etiology remains obscure but subject to knowledgeable discourse, and includes Ebola, small pox (Red Plague), dysenteries, typhus, anthrax, influenzas, and a variety of named Plagues (Great, Grey, Red, bubonic etc.).This study was necessarily based on written historical records, many originally chronicled in archives of churches, etc. and written by survivors of the disease. The response of the Church to the origin, impact and dealings with the sick is detailed.Etiology of "Black Death" was eventually ascribed to humans infected with bacterium Yesinia pestis after bitten and thus inoculated by the rat flea Xenopsylla cheopsis. There followed an almost immediate course of sepsis with swollen lymphatic nodes or buboes that suppurate, pneumonias, septic syndrome and death usually within 1-3 days. Mortality rates vary from 60-95%, populations often decimated 25-30%. The epidemiology of the disease is nicely discussed by the author who traces the initial cases from the Mediterranean to world-wide dissemination via trade routes, cargo ships, caravans, etc. via rats, fleas and human contacts.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Well written but not much substance By C. J. Thompson I read this short little book in a few hours. The author writes very well and his light style makes the subject enjoyable. Unfortunately, with the exception of some interesting material on the 'Flagellants', most of the information he provides has been dealt with in depth in quite a number of other books on the subject, such as the excellent Black Death by Phillip Zeigler. Also, had the author simply written a book about historical pandemics and left it at that, the book might have impressed me a little more. However, he chose to write a book about the Plague using the title 'The Black Death' and therein lies what I see as one of the flaws of the book. At the very beginning, Mr Martin unequivocally declared that the pathogen responsible for the first, second and third pandemics was 'Yersinia Pestis' and maintains this a the central thesis of the book. Today, however, there is a growing belief that the disease that ravaged Europe in the middle ages (and now referred to as the 'Black Death') is not the same disease whose cause was isolated as the Bubonic Plague organism during an outbreak in China in the 19th Century. Only in the final chapter does the author even acknowledge the the existence of any controversy and then he fails to deal with it in any meaningful way. I don't believe that any decent book on this interesting subject can afford to so cavalier with the issue today.

I just love everything about them! I love the quotes, the detail, the designs and the size! I use them as inspiration quotes on the bathroom mirror for my kids (and myself) to see each morning. I switch the pictures out from time to time to keep things fresh. The boys think that is a great way to start their day! I use these pictures as thank you cards and for other occasions that would constitute a greeting card. I feel that this is such a more personal way to let people know that you are thinking of them!!!In addition to the practical purposes of the finished product the actual process of coloring it both relaxing and therapeutic! I make sure to set aside 20 minutes nearly daily for coloring and I feel so much better when I get my time in! I think there is something very wonderful that happens when you color and I found that is it one of my favorite things to do!!! This whole series of books are all wonderful and each book focuses on something a bit different than the others! All the books are awesome and I HIGHLY recommend them! I cannot wait to see what other books that come out and I hope I am lucky enough to review them here for all of you!!! 5 HUGE STARS!!!

14 of 14 people found the following review helpful. A pillar in a very strong trilogy By Etienne Lorenceau Magic and deception are not an art about sleeving or double bottom, traps and mirrrors. It's the art of taking people into their own dreams where attention to the secret movements, tricked props etc becomes secondary. Misdirection is the word magicians use to wrongly route spectators' attention, focusing it only where it supports the dream. This book is not an how to book but it's one of the best analysis of what misdirection is.The art of misdirection is what makes the difference between a guy doing tricks (properly or badly) and a true magician. The two other books in the trilogy are the Trick brain which classifies every magical effects and the author's book on showmanship. They can be completed by Maskelyne and David Devant's "Our Magic" and by Henning Nehlms book on showmanship.Anybody seriously interested in magic or deception (politics, military and business strategies) should know this unknown book.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. magic as philosophy By Scott C. Locklin Magic ain't pulling rabbits out of a hat. Magic is all about manipulating what people see. It's directly applicable to politics, fist-fighting, advertising, seduction and a whole host of other human activities which require the attention of one or more participants. Reading this book has changed my outlook on things like few have. Learning to live it will require much study. If you look at politicians and captains of industry, many of them will actually admit to being amateur magicians. There is a reason for this. It's not just a nerdy hobby. It's a way of looking at the world which is very powerful indeed. The other volumes are also OK, but they don't hold the attention like this one does. This is the core to it all. There is a reason it is going for $200 used.

This book is a short of approximately 10,000 words. Ashley wanted one last girl’s night out as her friends seemed to be dropping like flies to this mating thing. She had no real problem with the thought of finding her own mate, and yet when he walked right up to her, growling and claiming her as his, she was a little uncomfortable about the fact that this alpha was a bad wolf biker. She can't be further from the truth with this guy! Yes, he's a biker but he's also normal lol if that makes sense. Dont get me wrong he can be very bad and naughty but can also give her a home and family. I do have one request though for this author. WE KNOW their names but they dont always introduce each other or know the others name. At least in these shorts that not always the case.

It's a simple and fun read. The only thing I wished was different, was if they had the source for every fact next to the fact. He creates more in-depth war games with chess pieces, tries palm-reading, goes fossil and gold hunting in his desk. He tries driving a car on his desk, even making detailed licenses; has a tea ceremony; makes a soundtrack to a book he made. We see the robot family that Yokoi is protective of.Now more people are getting dragged into it. One of their classmates still thinks him and Yokoi are in a serious relationship. Then a classmate inadvertently barges in and ruins something Seki had made. They get in trouble by the teacher. They’re doing more things outside class, too. They have a fight in the snow, where Yokoi protects a bunny Seki made. And Yokoi meets Seki’s little sister, who wants his attention. His little sister is going to turn out just like him, too, clearly. This is a very light-hearted, episodic school-life comedy. It’s fun to read, and I enjoy finding out what Seki is coming up with in each episode. The amount of work he puts in his classroom shenanigans are impressive.[More of my reviews are available on my blog, Geeky Reading, to which there's a link on my profile.]

By Chie-Kiyo I bought this for my husband (vol. 1-4) and he loves it :)On a side note, I bought it new directly from Amazon and somehow ended up with a miss print? Says vol 3 on cover and in 'orders menu' however Manga inside is from vol 5. It recalls events that don't happen until vol 4 and at the end even says "thank you for reading vol 5!" Lol

All of Seki's distractions and antics keep life, school and otherwise, interesting for well-meaning Yokoi. Especially loved the snow bunny (too cute!), the bag check (robot family action-drama!), and the chess vs shogi (zombie attack!) chapters.
