I enjoyed reading all three, though I must say that Cat Circus is my favorite. Despite the title, Cat Circus is not just for cat lovers. Cats are the central characters of only one of the ten stories. In this book Bird has found her stride. With good humor and an impressive command of the English language, she reflects on experiences that have given meaning to her life. She approaches the writing with delicate, good-natured humor. Bird finds a way of pointing out ironies while maintaining respect and affection for her characters. She comes at the problems of the world with a fresh voice I would describe as genuinely and understandably perplexed. She in no Pollyanna, but she never gives in to mean spiritedness or despair. And that refined, insightful, good-natured humor is always present.Bird is bringing new life to the short story form. In her hands, the short story is particularly apt for today's reader seeking a quick read that is moving, instructive, entertaining and inspiring.

This is for anyone who likes to people watch, who wake up realizing one day that their families are weird, or who simply like to laugh. She exposes her own family in a way that's not at all violational or stinging, but reveals the strange minutae that make them and their relationships what they are. I think my favorite moment in the entire collection arrives when she and her husband Pat are trying to get their cats to perform tricks for her skeptical brother-in-law, and the roller coaster of emotions when the cats do/don't step up to the plate. At one point Pat, frustrated after a kitty trick failure, whispers to Joan "Let's see HIM [the brother-in-law] do a trick!" and I snorted laughing alone in my apartment. Fantastic.Although the book is essentially comedic, maybe that makes the more serious moments even more striking. At one point, she describes her journey into vegetarianism and mentions how bad it made her feel to eat something's wings. A wow moment for any reader, I think. There's also a story about her time volunteering at a food kitchen, bleak yet peppered with moments of acute, wonderful observations of humanity.Highly recommended! Can't wait for the next.

While Mrs. Bird’s previous stories have been fantastical, these stories are grounded in real, everyday people and explore a range of experiences, including a humorously tragic junior high drama performance, compassionate portraits of loved ones (yes, including cats), and several potentially controversial vignettes on American life. Each story is told optimistically, finding the best in the characters. The stories deftly illuminate the complexities of human beings and emphasize the ways that each life experience can spur a bit of soul searching, a reevaluation of our values, or a revelation of our fundamental character. In this, these stories are engaging because they each offer a reminder of those memories we all carry that make us who we are.
