A gripping story of love, death and danger in Nazi-occupied France from the bestselling author of The Throwaway Children.
When Adelaide Anson-Gravetty finds out her father is not the man who raised her, she is both shocked and intrigued. Determined to find out more about her new family, she travels to the convent of Our Lady of Mercy in France to meet her aunt, the Reverend Mother.
But when France falls to the German army, Adelaide and the nuns are soon in the thick of a war that threatens both their beliefs and their lives. Collaborating with the Resistance, sheltering Jewish orphans, defying the rulings of Vichy France: these are dangerous activities in dangerous times.
These courageous women must give all they've got in order to protect the innocent from the evil menace of the Nazi war machine.

I could not put this book down until I had read the last page. You don't find that very often. She keeps you riveted with each chapter. The story content is absolutely excellent. Not a pretty story, but I'm sure that the majority in France during WWII lived just like this. In terror of the Nazi's!I have read 2 books by this author just in a few days. I am going to upload another of her books, but I am going to have to wait a while because I really need to do some work and pay attention to my husband.lol I'm afraid I have neglected both reading her wonderful books.

When I say "liked," I really ought to say "appreciated," because there is nothing to like about a story of ruthless Nazis terrorizing the French countryside and shipping off Jews to extermination camps. The book was a noble effort to bring a decent plot to life and to tell the story of young Adelaide, who joined the British espionage network during the war. So yes, the plot was good and the author painted a believable portrait of farm/country life during the French resistance. But overall, having just read Code Name Verity (Wein) last year, along with Doerr's All the Light We Cannot See, it seemed a little weak. The character of the Reverend Mother was fairly well-developed, as was her aging aunt. The main character, not so much. Among other things, there was a real sense of unresolved tension between her and her stepfather. Finally, I confess: one of the main reasons I didn't love this book is that the topic of WWII genocide is quite common in current fiction and also abysmally depressing. I tend to like books that are more diverting and uplifting.
