PDF Ebook Lexicon: American Style, by Patrick Ragains
Adult humor with remarkable insight into our American lexicon...the words, names and phrases we use to communicate on a daily basis. Author Patrick Ragains has utilized his great passion for humor to pay homage to legendary comedian George Carlin. The author presents readers with a wealth of information about the way people express themselves in a great narrative voice that a wide audience will enjoy reading about and learning from.Described by one publisher's manuscript review specialist as "honestly one of the most useful manuscripts I have picked up in some time" Ragains has proved beyond a doubt that the English language is more flexible than Silly Putty...that words can be molded and created and bent and turned inside out and reborn. The material is well-researched, thoroughly presented and includes details that add to the credibility of this writer. In addition to providing laughter and insight about our English language, this book can also be used as a compelling learning tool for those learning our language or looking to improve their verbal communications.

From the Author My initial purpose in writing this literary trip down the rabbit hole was to honor a ground-breaking comedian. But, it has also come to my realization while writing that I also did it for my shear love of words. I hope I can expose you and other readers to some of the wonders, wackiness and mysteries of our English language.
From the Inside Flap A tribute to George Carlin and the remarkable effect the "Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television" can have on a young mind.
From the Back Cover There's actually a high school in America with the nickname "Criminals."Could anything possibly 'Be' more subtle than the 'B' in subtle? When did Richard become such a Dick?A very attractive, thin mother is called a "Momshell."People in Vermont call their Boston tourists "Massholes."While the name "Cade" is trendy popular amongst your peers, it could get your son beat-up at school. These are just some of the odd and fascinating observations featured in this book. For the past three decades rookie author Patrick Ragains has been plotting to unleash his unique (and sometimes controversial) insights about our language...our words, name and phrases. He has tried to organize them all here in Lexicon: American Style. Ragains has compiled lists, chapters and brief essays about our lexicon that amuses, confuses and defuses him. His subjects range from "Words That Go Against Our Spelling Rules" to "New Combo-words" to "WTF Sports Team Names"...and as part of his tribute to late comic George Carlin, his "Favorite Profanity." Well-suited for the coffee table, but probably better suited for the bathroom, Lexicon: American Style is sure to educate, entertain or provoke you. Read on.

In expert hands they can be manipulated deftly and take you prisoner. They pierce your thoughts and work their magic inside you.One word, the right word, can make you cry, enhance a joke, or close a deal. The menu is not the meal but without the correct language you cannot see or feel the story. This book is about the love and mysteries of the English language. Stephen King said that when words/language are used correctly they create a rich stew that you can eat with a spoon. If you love words…the appearance, meanings, sounds, spellings, and yes even the “taste” of them you will enjoy this book. This is not a scholarly textbook or thesaurus-like inquisition of our language, but rather a thought provoking examination exposing the mysteries of our English words with a humorous fascination. The limits of your language define the limits of your world.Read this book, have a laugh, and expand your world…or at least learn to swear better.

A Monumental Hoot and a snorting good read By Todd Halterman Lexicon: American Style is a monumental hoot and certain to provide near unlimited fodder at the water cooler or the watering hole after work. Ragains takes you places with this study of our crazy language that you may not think you needed to go. But you did. Trust me. You'll snort so hard you'll need a Kleenex after reading this rollicking investigation of how the language evolves and astonishes. Thanks for this. The world is never funny enough, but this book does its part to make it funnier.
