How can psychotherapists apply the wealth of recent research in Positive Psychology to their clinical work to help their clients change in positive directions?

Bill O’Hanlon, who originated Solution-Oriented Therapy in the early 1980s, and Bob Bertolino, an experienced clinician, build the bridge between positive psychology and psychotherapy in this book that allows readers to focus on the mental, behavioral, emotional, cognitive, and spiritual health of their clients. Following the highly readable and user-friendly approach of the Therapist Notebooks, this book contains 75 activities, exercises, and handouts throughout seven chapters that therapists can implement both in sessions and as activities outside the therapeutic milieu.

Among the many attractive features included are:

  • exercises that follow a standard format for ease of use and implementation
  • research findings that underscore the importance of focusing on strengths and well-being
  • overviews and suggestions for use that flank each exercise and contextualize them.

Readers appreciate the breadth of research and literature covered, the interactive exercises that both clients and clinicians can use, and devices presented to help translate research into practice, such as the P.O.S.I.T.I.V.E. Framework and The Happiness Hypothesis. For mental health practitioners who are interested in building resilience and strength, both within their clients and within themselves, this book is indispensable.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Good book for positive psychology groups By Paul G Hartman This book contains many useful ideas and exercises for a positive psychology group. It has been an important resource for the weekly positive aging group I facilitate.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Not useful for therapists By AmazonGeek Very thin content. If you've been using positive psychology in your practice by incorporating research techniques then you're also going to find this handbook very disappointing. I was hoping for printable handouts but wish that I'd just purchased the Kindle version and saved some money. There's nothing but light over-views that are lacking. To me these authors don't have a practical working knowledge of the subject, it's like they've taken some research in the field and lacking that deeper working knowledge, have turned out some pages to sell based on what they've gleaned. If you haven't studied positive psychology or kept current with the research then you'll most likely find some ideas helpful although I would recommend reading the material and research noted in the footnotes. For me this was a waste of time and $55.I think that as a self-help book this could be very useful. If the author's had marketed this book as a self-help book I would it another star or two.

If you want to do positive psychology therapy, this is the book. It lays out many week's worth of exercises and areas of discussion. Start with this and then add to it if you want to expand your knowledge and repertoire even more.
