“Where is our house?” These four simple words spoken by Charlie would commence years of struggle, heartbreak and learning. Diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease, a once brilliant college professor struggled to conceptualize a world which grew increasingly more complicated and confusing. NOTHING LEFT TO BURN graphically and vividly describes Charlie’s journey into the quadmire of Alzheimer’s while his wife attempts to transition to her new role of caregiver. While disease continued to pummel and permeate Charlie’s brain, shredding connections and shattering the known world, his psychologist wife began a search into ways to compensate for Charlie’s decline while still maintaining a meaningful relationship with a man she no longer knew. This is a true story which will have an inevitable ending. In the meantime, the author hopes her story might help others toward an uncerstanding of the day-to-day struggles so that families and caregivers may move forward, making informed decisions which result in feelings of well-being for patient and caregiver alike.

Review   There is so much in this book that I would like to touch on, but this is merely a review. The author's style is conversational. I felt as if she and I were good friends having a cup of tea as she shared Charlie's latest antic. The reader will find some humor in Nothing Left To Burn; they will also find sadness and, at times, triumph. I wish Dr. Pirnot blessings and the strength to continue with her care-giving and I hope she will continue writing.                                                                   Five Stars....................................Readers Favorite

It was interesting for me to compare the stages my dad is currently in compared to Charlie's. As my dad still lives at home with my mother, I could relate to the at home caregiving; although my sister who liver next door is his primary caregiver as my mother has her own difficulties and is not always willing to understand the changes in my dad. They are both quite elderly, dad 89, mom 85. The book did give me a better understanding of what to expect in the coming months/years. I am passing this book onto my sister since she deals with our dad everyday. Thank you Karen for an easy to read yet comprehensive analogy of this disease.

Karen told hers and Charlie's story in such an honest, vivid, and detailed manner that it produced in me both sadness and admiration for both of them. The feelings of loss, discouragement, and fright as the disease progressed were so prominent. I can hear a lot of caregivers telling their family and friends, "NOW do you understand??" Putting their thoughts into words is a true gift for them.

A Truly Remarkable Book By Marie Nothing Left To Burn by Dr. Karen Hutchins Pirnot, a retired Clinical Psychologist trained in child and geriatric services is an extraordinary life story. She is presently a caregiver for her beloved husband Charlie with whom she has been married for almost three decades. Charlie served in the US Navy on USS Randolph, was a mental health professional as well as teaching doctoral students at the Psych Dept. in a large university in Iowa and has now transitioned from a highly respected professor of psych to one who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. This is a degenerative disease affecting the frontal lobes of the brain which leads to dementia.Kudos to the children and grand-children who provide love and support for their mom and dad and how helpful they were as Charlie continued to lose his identity. This disease affects the entire family unit and without their helpful insights and strategies life as we know it would have been much more difficult. It has now become more difficult for Charlie to follow instructions and formulate coherent thoughts. It breaks Dr. Karen's heart to watch her beloved Charlie struggle thru his daily activities. It has been seven years now and Charlie continues to struggle into more difficult stages of Alzheimer's Disease as his cognitive ability declines. His body begins to slow down, his child-like behaviors are escalating and his executive functioning is now grossly impaired. Additionally Charlie has medical issues with his prostate together with Barrett's Esophagus (disorder of the lining of the esophagus) so he must be watched for possible episodic chocking which requires his food to be cut into small pieces.I believe this book is a must-read for all those involved in the care of loved ones affected with Alzheimer's & dementia related disorders and most important best describes the role of the caregiver together with all loving family members. It is a heartwarming description of the challenges Dr. Karen faces providing loving care and advocating for her ill spouse with love, respect and honor cherishing her marital vows.
