Tarot-reading artifact hunter Sara Wilde has had her share of tough assignments, but this one just might take the cake. When her newest client hires her to steal a fertility idol from an Amazonian sex-and-death cult, she finds herself south of the equator and shoulder deep in true believers, while Rio de Janeiro gears up for the closing celebrations of Carnival.Stealing the idol is one thing, however. Keeping it is another. The arcane black market has drawn a host of cutthroat operatives and Sara's now in their sights. In a race across one of the most colorful cities in South America on its most famed night of the year, Sara must navigate cunning enemies, backstabbing allies, a fifty-foot wedding cake float and a new, sensually mysterious contact who may be friend or foe... and whose name she'll never learn if she doesn't make it to dawn alive. No matter what the cards predict, it's going to be One Wilde Night.

You will want to tang along with her as she out thinks and out maneuvers the opposing team. As if that weren't enough, Stark wickedly introduces us to the mysterious Magician. The Magician is sexy as hell and all you want to do is to spend more time with him! Splendid writing and creative characters make this story pop! This idol chasing magical treasure hunt is sure to capture you in a world shrouded in the arcane.I'm very excited to see what Stark has in store for us. If there were a pre-order available for the next book, I would have already ordered it.

I'd like to give it 4 but it's too short to really be sure. Amazon doesn't give word counts but I'm guessing about 23000 words; about novella length. This is a refreshing break from all the vampire and werewolf stories that have been the recent surplus in urban fantasy. But it doesn't stand out much from other fantasy settings like those in the title of this comment. There is some uniqueness; plnty of room for future installments to be brilliant... or to be mediocre - that's the problem, it's too short to tell.PROS:Strong female lead. Good example there. And neither mushy nor prudish. There is no romance in this; just a James Bond-like suggestion that there could be more.Unique magic system. The inclusion of the Tarot was nearly brilliant. And it's good that it meshes into the world in more than one way. Some factual issues (the Thoth deck does NOT have two magicians), but nobody is reading this to become enlightened so that's lmost forgivable.CONS:Not enough of…well, everything. The magic system is hinted at but never actually shown. Who "the connected" (magically aware) really are or how they operate is nevr explained. How the Arcanum can be so super-secret while passing out business cards.Formulaic plot. This world is absolutely brimming with the potential to be just like everything else. It will be an uphill battle to make new installments that aren't formulaic. This story itself could have easily been an episode of the SyFy Channel's Warehouse 13 TV show. A show that was criticized for being too much like other networks' earlier shows. There was just enough different to keep it interesting. The lead character has powers; albeit a weak and not very aggressive one. But it will be so hard to avoid the formula pitfall that I doubt the author can do it. If every book in the series is a variation of "a new item is identified / go find it and end up endangered by whatever weirdness it causes / escape said weirdness after a narrow brush with death / then finally go back and swipe the item for ultimate success" then I won't be paying for any more of the books. Why would I if I could just watch another episode of the Jackie Chan cartoon show and get the same thing? Don't get me wrong. The books could turn out to be brilliant. But it will take an exceptional writer and a constant effort to avoid taking the easy way out. I'm a cynic. I don't expect the best.I liked the story for the good potential it had. And the action was good. But there's some bad potential in there too, and that scares me a bit.

Loving this series By JLW I first came upon this author in a terrific anthology "Twelve Shades of Midnight" which for some reason is no longer being sold on Amazon, but anyway, since then, have been anxiously waiting for more books in this series. The heroine is fantastic and not cookie cutter - she's heroic and funny but not boringly goody two-shoes. There is a developing romance between her and "The Magician" who so far is more of a side character in the story. This is a fascinating and original world built by the author.
