About the Author

Jerrold Lee Shapiro is Professor and former Chairman in the Department of Counseling Psychology at Santa Clara University, where he is Director of the Center for Professional Development. He is also Managing Partner of Family Business Solutions. From 1970 to 1982, he taught at the University of Hawaii, where he was awarded the Regents Medal for outstanding teaching among senior faculty.  A Professor of Counseling Psychology at Santa Clara University since 1982, in 2006, he received the Award for Sustained Excellence in Scholarship – The highest honor for Scholarship awarded by Santa Clara University. He also held a visiting professorship at UC Santa Cruz and was president of PsyJourn Corporation, developers of self-help computer-assisted counseling software.

He has authored and edited nine books including three on fatherhood: The Measure of a Man: Becoming the Father you wish your Father Had Been (currently available in four languages),; Becoming a Father: Social, Develop-mental, and Clinical Perspectives (co-edited with Drs.Michael Jay Diamond and Marty Greenberg and winner of a Book of the Year award from the American Journal of Nursing); and When Men Are Pregnant (currently available in five languages). Other books include Brief Group Treatment: A Practical Guide for Counselors and Therapists; and Trance on Trial, (with Alan Scheflin) which won the 1991 Manfred S. Guttmacher Award for Literary Excellence in Law and Psychiatry. Dr. Shapiro has authored over 200 professional papers, presentations and symposia and a Poster: "A Father’s Declaration.” An experienced speaker, he has appeared on well over 100 radio and television programs including The Oprah Winfrey Show; the CBS Morning Show; ABC, CBS and NBC TV News,  NPR; PBS; CNN; People are Talking (San Francisco) Sonya Live and Special Reports Television. His work on fatherhood has been carried internationally in print media. Among the articles written by him or citing his research are pieces in TIME Magazine; The New York Times; Los Angeles Times; Wall Street journal; San Francisco Chronicle; San Jose Mercury News; Self Magazine; Parents Magazine; Bridal Guide, San Francisco Magazine and Psychology Today.

Professor Shapiro speaks regularly to groups of parents on topics that focus on parenting and life transitions, including fathering, the transition to college for parents and their high schoolers, new methods of educating boys to enhance success and the intricacies of family business. A licensed clinical psychologist, Dr. Shapiro is has held licenses in California and Hawaii, a Diplomate from the American Board of Medical Psychotherapists, a Certified Clinical Consultantship with the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis, and a Certified Group Therapist from the American Group Psychotherapy Association. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (Divisions of Family Psychology, Independent Practice and Media Psychology).

This intimate and engaging book provides a window into the mind of a brilliant and insightful researcher and clinician, affording one a front-row seat to some of the most touching moments of therapy. Thorough, encyclopedic, and refreshingly honest, "Pragmatic Existential Counseling and Psychotherapy" clearly and confidently maps out an effective approach to existential psychotherapy. Dr. Shapiro provides illuminating case studies, and makes sure to bookend complex philosophical ideas with easy-to-understand explanations and interpretations. This book is essential reading for all of those who hope to making counseling their profession, and for all those who hope to get the most out of life.Dr. Shapiro stands on the shoulders of giants, elucidating and expanding upon the ideas of Viktor Frankl and Rollo May. These are underlying as well as overarching principles of effective existential psychotherapy.Respect: In Shapiro, J.L. (2016). Pragmatic Existential Counseling and Psychotherapy. Los Angeles, CA: Sage, Dr. Shapiro demonstrates incredible respect, not only for the patients he treats, utilizing an inductive process to inform and guide the work; but respect for the reader as well. This is a sophisticated text, well grounded in theory while using vignettes that come to life on the page to demonstrate the art and science of the genre. Rather than speak at or down to the reader, Dr. Shapiro discloses his own internal process. Although valuable for clinicians at any level, the greater one’s experience in the field, the more one can extrapolate and apply the material to one’s own practice. The entire text is a shining example of respect for psychotherapists at all levels, from trainee to master.Understanding: Although the text challenges the reader to intellectually grasp the full significance of some passages; myriad examples bring the message home. Regardless of the reader’s preferred method of learning; learning will indeed occur. Placing the reader in the therapy room allows one to enter the reality, the actual existence of the client, reorienting the therapist toward understanding from the client’s perspective and hence allowing that understanding to take the therapy where it needs to go.Connection: Here again duality exists. A genuine, immediate, empathic connection between therapist and client is a basic requirement for development and growth. In addition to an uncanny ability to listen to and connect with patients, Dr. Shapiro accomplishes that difficult feat on paper, establishing an intimate connection with the reader. He wears the mantle of guide, teacher, colleague and friend.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in psychotherapy By northern californian I am a psychotherapist and a professor who has taught and published on psychotherapy at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in psychotherapy. It is particularly useful for students who want to know more about how psychotherapy works as well as for professionals who want to know more about how existential psychotherapy could contribute to their practice. One of its biggest strengths is that it is incredibly interesting. The personal anecdotes and case examples really set the stage. I loved Shapiro’s introductory chapter where he talks about how he came to be an existential psychotherapist and how he didn’t find out he was until he overheard students talking in the bathroom! (You’ll have to read the book!).The book then goes on to discuss existential philosophy and its relationship to the practice of psychotherapy. It moves through basic theory to various core concepts and aspects of therapeutic practice, to discuss issues concerning the use of research in psychotherapy, a hot topic nowdays. It expands beyond individual therapy to group, family and couple therapy. Then it goes from that to deal with important issues that moderate practice: culture, gender, and life transitions. Finally it concludes with an extensive case example.Let me say overall that it is an excellent book that shows the relevance and importance of existential practice for today’s world. It is comprehensive and integrative in bringing in psychological research and in dealing with important issues relevant to clinical practice such as gender and culture. It does a great job of elucidating what existential therapy uniquely has to offer in comparison to, or in addition to, other approaches.

About the Author Cartoonist Lynn Johnston, best known for her strip For Better or For Worse, attended the Vancouver School of Art and worked as a medical artist before turning to comic art. For thirty years, her popular strip appeared in newspapers around the world before Johnston retired. A "must have" for any For Better or For Worse Fan By ConnieP For Better or For Worse by Lynn Johnston is one of my favorite comic strips of all times. I love the story lines and relatable humor, and I thought it was especially neat how the characters aged in real time. I actually felt like I came to know the individual characters.Although the strip originated in 1979, I discovered the For Better or For Worse strip myself in my local newspaper during the 1990’s. I became an immediate fan and purchased every For Better or For Worse book that had been published to date, and bought each collection as it was published thereafter. I was so disappointed when Lynn ended the strip in 2008, although I understood her reasons for doing so. It was the end of an era, so to speak. (The comic strip began running “repeats” in the newspapers immediately thereafter, including a small amount of updated material. That way, a new generation of fans could discover this innovative strip as well.)When I saw For Better or For Worse: The Comic Art of Lynn Johnston was going to be published, I pre-ordered it on Amazon. I knew I would be familiar with the comic strips themselves, but I figured the book would give me new perspective/history on Lynn and the comic strip. The book is being published to coincide with an international touring exhibition at the Art Gallery of Sudbury (Ontario, Canada). The exhibition runs from July 11 through November 1, 2015, then will tour other galleries across Canada and the United States. Lynn had been told previously by two curators that what she does is NOT art. However, the Art Gallery of Sudbury felt otherwise, saying her work IS art and belongs in a gallery. The Art Gallery of Sudbury was interested not only in Lynn’s syndicated work, but drawings from her childhood, her days as a commercial artist, and work she has done since For Better or For Worse. I would love to see the exhibition, however, I have no idea if and when it will be anywhere near me here in Michigan. In the meantime, I’ll settle for this book.The book itself does not disappoint. The first thing I noticed was the quality. Although it is a paperback, the front and back covers are fairly thick and very colorful. Even the inside portions of the front and back covers have colored print. The featured daily strips are in black and white, while photographs and Sunday strips are in vibrant color. The book contains 192 unusually thick pages beginning with a table of contents and ending with an index. (See customer image.)While some of the book’s information has been covered in some of Lynn’s previous books (such as the anniversary publications), much of it is new and more indepth. Lynn talks about such things as growing up in a family of artists, her love of drawing from a very young age, getting in trouble for her humor at school, attending but not completing The Vancouver School of Art, various jobs/projects she took on that paved her way for a future she never saw coming, and things she is working on now that she is “retired” from the strip. In addition, she discusses some very personal things, including a mother who never could give full praise (which hurt Lynn’s self-confidence), two failed marriages, and her health crisis. She also discusses who the characters in her strip were based on, where she drew her ideas from, how the strip and its demands grew bigger than life itself (resulting in a staff of people working for Lynn), etc. All of this gives a great insight into the artist and her long running comic strip.I thoroughly enjoyed the book and would definitely recommend it to any For Better or For Worse fan.

(They even did alot of the same things- like she was "spying" on them! Still! )

The pieces in the book are not named or numbered (i.e. there is no BWV number for any of the pieces). The original key of the piece is not specified. There are no measure numbers. There are no performance notes. There is no CD with the book. It is important to mention that this is an arrangement and not a transcription. There are changes to the original in duration of note values, placement of ornaments, etc. Original scores of the music are not provided for comparison and study.This is the only book that transcribes Bach's Ana Magdalena Notebook book for the guitar and one would expect a very high quality book. Compare this with the book http://www.amazon.com/J-S-Bach-Selections-Magdalena-Performance/dp/0634099051 and you will understand what I mean. The author missed a great opportunity to produce a high quality book that could become the reference for guitar students everywhere. I hope to see improvements in the next editions.Having said this, I think the author has performed a valuable service for guitarists and this book is the place to start learning Bach's music.

There are eight Minuets, and with no CD included - you'll want to find an example of each piece on YouTube to familiarize yourself.Good luck in doing this.So my first few hours with this book were spent finishing the author's job and notating each selection in pencil.But overall, this is a good book to have.

The efficient drawings coupled with equally efficient verbal humor kept me turning the page. Some are grins, some are smiles, some are giggles and some are belly laughs, but all are worth a look. Bonds This book is HEAVILY tied to an online framework at [...], access to which is provided by a code inside the front cover. Based on a quick response from their support line, that code is good for one year of access for one person. Additional years or additional people cost $30/ea for just the code so it's currently a better deal just to buy multiple books for the first year for each person.Lots of questions can be answered here: (Amazon removes URLs so see my comment outside the review below.)Essentially to make best use of this book you need individual Minecraft accounts and individual learntomod.com accounts for each person both teacher and student.With that said, the framework they use looks really nice. It's essentially Scratch for Minecraft Mods. This would be especially good for younger programmers who may not grasp the concepts of loops and conditionals without the visual reminders languages like Scratch provide.

Excellent Book to Learn Modding & Coding By San Antonio Academy of Texas Kids are automatically drawn and interested in the game Minecraft, and “Minecraft Modding for Kids” provides an excellent avenue to move children’s interest from the game, to programming and coding. Having used the LearnToMod program in the classroom myself, I have witnessed first-hand the enthusiasm and drive students have to accomplish the different tasks and projects.“Minecraft Modding for Kids” is a great resource for parents and teachers, especially those without any coding experience. It guides readers (users) with clear and concise instructions for each project. The online program provides videos for those auditory and visual learners who do better when they hear and/or see the steps, and also provides a place for students to share programs they have modified or created on their own. Even though the online program provides the means to put the coding into action, the book goes beyond the online program by providing additional tips and tricks as well as challenging the students to work at solving additional variations on the programs they created. I would highly recommend this book to any parent or student who wants to learn how to mod Minecraft and to learn the basic fundamentals of programming.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The 2nd Peanuts Book Ever! By W. Langan I don't know where or how you're going to get the 1st Peanuts book, but if you do, please let me know! Anyways, this book is the early years of Charlie Brown, Lucy, Schroeder, Patti (no not Peppermint Patty who would come into the picture years later), Voilet, and Shermy. Also, Linus is introduced here as a baby. The characters look a little different than what you're used to since many of these cartoons originally date from 1952 and 1953. Lucy is kind of cute with her big eyes (no Psychiatric Help booth yet) and Snoopy was still a little puppy (he hadn't yet climbed to the top of his doghouse but he knew how to drive Charlie Brown and Schroeder nuts!). Anyways, a must for your collection if you can get your hands on it!

I won't go into all the details about how long it took me to get my calendar, and I was afraid when I finally got it that it would disappoint me. But it didn't! The photos are gorgeous, and the whimsy-loving, enchanting-seeking me fell in love instantly with each and every faerie house. I will probably keep this calendar forever because the photos take my breath away and inspire my imagination--totally fanciful and awe-inspiring! I can see wanting to recreate these images and others in my arty attempts--whether in the garden, or in my mosaic creations or in watercolor--you name it. Sheer delight and rainbow-bubble bliss!

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Another Winner...Of course! By Self Helper A while back, I bought a book from this series called Christmas jazz and immediately fell in love with it. It was millions of miles ahead of many other chrismas solos I own. It was arranged by Brent Edstrom (possibly someone related to the founder of Hal Leonard Publication since he has a similar last name). Since that, he has become one of my favorite arranger since his solos sound so professional and different.I am a travel nurse who often ends up in small towns USA, probably not by choice. During my assigment, I was excited to find an untuned old Steinway in the hospital'so staff room. I was just overjoyed to be able to play during my lunch breaks to escape boredom. In the middle of hot summer, the co-workers were drawn to the sound of my Christmas book. People can tell amazing from generic. I was always complimented on pieces by two arrangers: Edstrom and Dan Coates. I never tell them I cannot arrange to save my life, but they probably did not care.Now back to this book. Halfway through playing yesterday, I recognized Edstrom. Although not as perfect as the Christmas book it is still worth getting if you care for Broadway or cocktail piano. Most songs a bit easier to play than Christmas book, level advanced-intermediate. I wish it would have include my favorites: I'll take Manahattan and My Blue Heaven. I've been looking for these arrangments for some time, and for some reasons these songs just not being printed anymore :-(In case some clever guys at Hal Leonard are happen to be reading this).Chord changes, clever bridges, notes that happily jump off the paper and makes you wanna sing or just snap your fingers. My favorite one is You Took Advantage of me by Rodgers--swingy-stride. Most of the other songs are not super hard and the chord symbols are included. If you want to listen before you buy, go to sheet music direct dot com-(remove spaces) search for separate songs listed below, find symbol picture that came from this book. The short audio sample of the beginning of every song, however keep in mind that each song beings as "straighforward" tune, and then goes into jazzy 'interlude-arrangements" that you won't get to hear; and that's, in my opinion is the best part.Most of the songs here are a little easier than his Christmas arrangments, but still seem to sound just right. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Another Superb Volume in the series. By Gregory Whitfield I'm giving it a 5 star review even though I haven't ordered it yet. But it's more for the entire series and for Brent Edstrom. I own more than 30 titles from this series, and though they are not all suitable for my purposes, all the musical arrangements are superb and reflect the style of the particular volume. I'm a well-trained pianist (Bach. of Music degree) who is also a very good sight-reader. I love jazz but I don't have the chops or the years of practice it would require to come even close to the perfection of Edstom's arrangements. This series is what I wish I had had 25 years ago. Up until then it was hit and miss, and good jazz arrangements usually came from vintage publications. This music, if played well and with style, can go up against the finest jazz pianist. I don't mean Oscar Peterson, Fats Waller and Art Tatum: I have plenty of transcriptions by those geniuses and they are difficult in the extreme--I've never been able to pull off a Tatum arrangement. Edstrom makes you sound like a professional, and a really good professional at that. I also like Dan Coates a great deal. I also recommend the series "Piano Stylings of the Great Standards", six volumes by various arrangers, mostly on the advanced level of difficulty. These are nice in that they also have the complete original song score, helpful if you sing, as I do. Now I'm off to purchase "Broadway Jazz" and can't wait to play "Lullabye of Broadway". 3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A Slightly Disappointing Volume Of An Otherwise Great Series. By Horace Vandergelder I have a good number of volumes from this Excellent Jazz Piano Series which is arranged for the most part by the very talented Brent Edstrom. In fact the entire series in my opinion is the finest I have ever encountered. I was very excited when this volume of Broadway Solos was announced and pre-ordered it. Though it has some excellent arrangements I find it to be a bit of a mixed bag and not as good as most of the other volumes in this series. Most any good songbook will contain a couple of arrangements that a pianist may not like as well as the other arrangements in the book and that's to be expected and I don't let that detract from my overall opinion of the book. However in this book I'm disappointed with a greater number of arrangements.The two very well known Rodgers and Hammerstein songs included in this book, "Younger Than Springtime" and "The Surrey With The Fringe On Top" seem very uninspired. Perhaps the first of these songs just doesn't easily translate into a jazz arrangement and wasn't a good choice to be included. However "The Surrey With The Fringe On Top" is very well suited for a jazz arrangement but the included arrangement is weak and sounds very simplistic. This is one song where including the catchy intro verse would have worked very well but it isn't incorporated anywhere in the arrangement instead there is a solo portion added in that doesn't enhance the arrangement at all. Another disappointment was "Old Devil Moon" which is another song that is well suited for a jazz arrangement but this one also sounds simplistic and does not do justice to the great song it is. There are also a couple of other arrangements that are mediocre but I think I've included enough criticism here.All of the above being said, compared to other jazz books not from this series, this book still has enough very good arrangements to surpass the others. There is an interesting arrangement of "Little Girl Blue" that is based on an Oscar Peterson arrangement. For me it seems like the most challenging number in the book but from my initial run through I can tell it will be worth the work to learn it. Some of the other arrangements that I like include: "Lullaby Of Broadway", "Till There Was You", "My Funny Valentine" and "I Could Write A Book" which has a well placed key change mid way through (C major to D flat major) that's very pleasing.I wish this volume was as good as the others in the series but I have no regrets having purchased it. I'll enjoy the arrangements I like and look forward to future releases in this series.
