Excellent first book, enjoyable to read By Athene Five Short Stories about a Nerd in Love by Dan Pullen is a sweet and interesting good summer read about a young man growing up and experiencing his first encounters with the mysterious ways of love. In these linear stories, he makes his bemused way through what may be thought of as a 12-step program of discovery with his guy pals beginning with mild interest, friendship, wondering if a break up counts if you weren't that interested and your best friend got the girl. He bicycles his way into his first boy-girl moments and drives out the other end of the process with ...well you need to read it to see where this all leads.The author has a fine, spare, literary touch with his story-telling and a gift for using just the right amount of descriptive language. One of my favorite character descriptions, in 'A Desert Rose in a Pizza Parlor' is that of a 'stone chip of a man'. The book is a short read, and can be thoroughly enjoyed in one sitting- actually it was impossible to put down, so one sitting is about right. My congratulations to the author on the publication of his first book and hopes for more to come.

The nostalgia of bygone days, awkward flirtations, and stolen kisses is artfully crafted to capture youthful energy through lens of adult reminiscence.
