An Abundance of Fresh New Ideas over 350 pages By Carl Armstrong I have all Watson's books on the French which are excellent, but Moskalenko in many instances is more thorough and up to date.For example against the Advance var. he recommends 6.a3 Nh6 and the result is pure fireworks with many original new ideas.Against the Tarrasch var. 3.Nd2 Be7 with several deeply annotated games showing Morozevich's plans and objectives.For example:4.e5 c5 5.Qg4 Kf8!? 6.dc5 Nc6 7.Ngf3 h5!? 8.Qg3 h4! 9.Qf4 g5! 10. Qa4 Bd7! and whites Queen is running for her life.Instead if white plays 3.Nd2 Be7 4.Ngf3 Nf6 5.e5 Nfd7 6.Bd3 c5 7.c3 b6!? 8.0-0 Ba6 since whites Knight at f3 is misplaced in the ...b6...Ba6 system where it serves best either on Nh3 or Ne2.In the MacCutcheon var.Moskalenko deeply annotates several games of Korchnoi, showing why Korchnoi switched from 8.Qg4 g6 to 8.Qg4 Kf8!? For example after 9.Bd3 Nd2 10.Kd2 c5 11.h4!? (a typical attacking line in this var)Nc6 12.Rh3 c4! 13.Be2 Ne7 14.h5 Qb6 15.Qf4 Bd7 16.Rf3 Be8 17.Ke1 Qb2! attacking the lone Rook, 18.Qc1 Qc1 forcing an early exchange of Queens, 19.Rc1 b5 and black has a slight initiative.Moskalenko also gives his pet line in the Winawer var. 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.e5 b6 5.Qg4 Bf8!? with all blacks plans and objectives as well as the Portisch/Hook var. with 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.e5 c5 5.a3 Bc3 6.bc3 Qa5!? In summary, this book is a goldmine of information that will give black as well as white an abundance of weapons for club players and Masters as well.
