While the language is for doctors, nurses. medical students and health professionals, this concise book covers every malaise or injury known in the medical community. There are abbreviations in the front of the book, and a companion website for those wanting to test their knowledge is given in the introductory pages.The two largest sections of this textbook is the clinical presentation (in blue) and treatments for these diseases (in red). This covers cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, gastroenterology, renal medicine, endocrinology, infectious disease, haematology, oncology, neurology, phthalmology, dermatology, women's health and other, (which includes attempted suicide by drug overdosing, anaphylaxis, allergic reactions, cardiac and respiratory arrest, delirium, corna.). Both identification and treatment are then explained using appropriate medicines.This book just came handy last night, when I had to rush to pick up my son from his place of employment. He had gotten a sudden and intense headache and was looking pale. I rushed him to the ER where by then he was feeling better. Two hours later he was fine enough to walk out and go home without ever being seen by a doctor. This type of headache did not fit any of the headaches described on pages 130-131 of this book. While it would have been nice to know what caused the sudden and intense headache, we also knew that in medical triage, he did not stand a chance at being seen right away because the people in the waiting room who were vomiting and crying out in pain (broken rib) had more urgent needs.The book is written and published by medical experts from Oxford, England, so English statistics are used as the norm.My only complaint is that page numbers are in small numbers on the sides of the top of the pages. This is a minor note, as the knowledge in this book is phenomenal and helpful to everyone

By Cheryl The book begins by covering how to be a good medical professional and the steps to complete a clinical exam. The second section covers clinical presentations of illnesses (divided by medical specialty such as Rheumatology, Neurology, etc.), and how to evaluate the patient's symptoms in order to narrow down the diagnosis. And then the last section covers diagnosed diseases and treatments.Each topic is condensed into a couple pages but is sufficient to guide you to a diagnosis based on symptoms, etc. To test the book, I looked up episcleritis which I have and it says it's not painful and that any related systemic conditions are uncommon versus its eye damaging cousin, Scleritis. Yet, if you do a google search, episcleritis can be related to Lupus and it IS painful. But I suppose there is always going to be contradictory opinions among medical professionals, as medicine is an ever-changing and dynamic field of study.Overall the book provides great coverage of each subject by providing tables and images to give you "at a glance" a lot of information in a small amount of space. The pages are succint and interesting and provide a thorough overview of important clinical topics to give you a head start in your future medical courses, if you haven't already started, or as a reference manual. There's a lot of information packed into this book and I can't imagine anyone being disappointed in this book who is interested in learning about medicine.There's also a companion website to enhance learning and retention of the subject matter using self-test questions and flash cards, plus a companion book titled, "Medicine at a Glance Core Cases". In addition, to whet your appetite, sample medical cases are included on the website!

By Lynrie Very Worthwhile Medical Reference Material with a very British/UK English language and spelling.Very practical for me as my Primary Care Physicians retire and their practice is changing/expanding. Being passed like a hot potato to new associates and 5-7 minute clips, I need to read before AND after my appointments. As I'm aging and all my parts don't work as well as my younger versions, it's good reference materials on hand as I decide to self-treat, go to Minit-Clinic or the doctors office. The web ordinarily is my library but this has excellent graphics, photos, graphs, tables and descriptionsa. Access to a website ataglanceseries (dot) com/medicine for additional info and tools for those wanting more indepth info and/or actually studying medicine.Mom and Granny had medical reference books around when we were growing up so they'd doctor us BEFORE going to the doctors a last resort. I had available access to doctors for my own kids with low or no co-pay which I took advantage of it. So I really didn't have reference materials on hand or need them.I'm happy to have this on hand for myself and the kids I occasionally take care of too.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Introduction to Rank's Will Therapy By Hans G. Despain Karpf book, original published in 1953, is an introduction to the "Will Therapy" of Otto Rank. In comparison to the Freudian, Jungian and Adlerian schools of psychology Karpf book functions fine. However, Rank's real achievement goes far beyond Karpf depiction, and far beyond psychological theory and therapy. Otto Rank pushes psychology "Beyond Psychology" to social psychology, long before the development of a full social psychology in the 1950s and 60s, and into the realm of personal creativity as personality development and the existential contemplation of immorality versus morality. Karpf does no justice to these aspects of Otto Rank. Karpf does accomplish the differentiation of Rankian psychology from the other three major schools of thought.In this sense, Karpf book functions as an introduction to Rank's book "Will Therapy" but fails to develop the philosophical implications as sketched by Rank in his book "Truth and Reality" and the more theological propensities in human beings that Rank begins to contemplate in "Psychology and the Soul." As such Karpf does not fully grasp the "urge for creativity" human beings have which Rank stunningly presents in "Art and the Artist" and how it is suppressed (rather than fully nurtured) in contemporary schooling as he argues in "Modern Education" and how all of this taken together points us "beyond psychology" as Rank argues in his book "Beyond Psychology."Although I learned from Karpf book, E. James Lieberman is a far better introduction to Otto Rank and his work. For a comparison of Freud, Alder Jung and Rank, Ira Progoff's "The Death and Rebirth of Psychology" (1956) far outperforms Karpf (Progoff is a Jungian, but is highly sympathetic to Rank and holds his work in high and fair esteem; and Progoff's book is available free online).

Commonly named among the Great American Novels, the work is among the first in major American literature to be written throughout in vernacular English, characterized by local color regionalism. It is told in the first person by Huckleberry "Huck" Finn, a friend of Tom Sawyer and narrator of two other Twain novels (Tom Sawyer Abroad and Tom Sawyer, Detective). It is a direct sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The book is noted for its colorful description of people and places along the Mississippi River. Set in a Southern antebellum society that had ceased to exist about twenty years before the work was published, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is an often scathing satire on entrenched attitudes, particularly racism. Perennially popular with readers, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has also been the continued object of study by literary critics since its publication. It was criticized upon release because of its coarse language and became even more controversial in the 20th century because of its perceived use of racial stereotypes and because of its frequent use of the racial slur "nigger", despite strong arguments that the protagonist and the tenor of the book are anti-racist. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn explores notions of race and identity. An obvious complexity exists concerning Jim's character. While some scholars point out that Jim is good-hearted, moral, and not unintelligent (in pointed contrast to several of the white characters), others have criticized the novel as racist, citing the use of the word "nigger" and emphasizing the stereotypically "comic" treatment of Jim's superstition and ignorance. Huck struggles not only with the challenges of his strenuous journey, but also with the 19th century social climate and the role it forces on him regarding Jim. Throughout the story, Huck is in moral conflict with the received values of the society in which he lives, and while he is unable to consciously refute those values even in his thoughts, he makes a moral choice based on his own valuation of Jim's friendship and human worth, a decision in direct opposition to the things he has been taught. Mark Twain, in his lecture notes, proposes that "a sound heart is a surer guide than an ill-trained conscience" and goes on to describe the novel as "...a book of mine where a sound heart and a deformed conscience come into collision and conscience suffers defeat". To highlight the hypocrisy required to condone slavery within an ostensibly moral system, Twain has Huck's father enslave his son, isolate him, and beat him. When Huck escapes – which anyone would agree was the right thing to do – he then immediately encounters Jim "illegally" doing the same thing. Some scholars discuss Huck's own character, and the novel itself, in the context of its relation to African-American culture as a whole. John Alberti quotes Shelley Fisher Fishkin, who writes in her 1990s book Was Huck Black?: Mark Twain and African-American Voices, "by limiting their field of inquiry to the periphery," white scholars "have missed the ways in which African-American voices shaped Twain's creative imagination at its core." It is suggested that the character of Huckleberry Finn illustrates the correlation, and even interrelatedness, between white and black culture in the United States.

Along the way, we are treated to a sensual feast of the sights, smells, and rhythms of the Mississippi River and the humanistic education of Huck that culminates in his assisting in Jim's escape. The familiar adventures of Huck and runaway slave Jim's odyssey on a raft floating down the Mississippi have been well documented previously in audio format with noted versions read by Ed Begley, Will Wheaton (both from Dove), and the 1985 Grammy nominated Durkin Hayes production read by Dick Cavett. This version, beautifully read by actor Mike McShane, is a wonderful contribution to the recorded Twain canon. McShane handles multiple characterizations well, but excels in Huck's folksy narrative voice and Jim's understated power and dignity. A controversial masterpiece By JLind555 Okay, we all know the plot, so there's no sense in rehashing it; but this book has generated a great deal of heat and very little light lately, it's been banned in some school districts and attacked as racist garbage, so this review will address the question: Is "Huckleberry Finn", in fact, a racist book?The charge of racism stems from the liberal use of the N word in describing Jim. Some black parents and students have charged that the book is humiliating and demeaning to African-Americans and therefore is unfit to be taught in school. If there has been a racist backlash in the classroom, I think it is the fault of the readers rather than the book."Huckleberry Finn" is set in Missouri in the 1830's and it is true to its time. The narrator is a 13 year old, semi-literate boy who refers to blacks by the N-word because he has never heard them called anything else. He's been brought up to see blacks as slaves, as property, as something less than human. He gets to know Jim on their flight to freedom (Jim escaping slavery and Huck escaping his drunken, abusive father), and is transformed. Huck realizes that Jim is just as human as he is, a loving father who misses his children, a warm, sensitive, generous, compassionate individual. Huck's epiphany arrives when he has to make a decision whether or not to rescue Jim when he is captured and held for return to slavery. In the culture he was born into, stealing a slave is the lowest of crimes and the perpetrator is condemned to eternal damnation. By his decision to risk hell to save Jim, he saves his own soul. Huck has risen above his upbringing to see Jim as a friend, a man, and a fellow human being.Another charge of racism is based on Twain's supposed stereotyping of Jim. As portrayed by Twain, Jim is hardly the ignorant, shuffling Uncle Tom that was so prevalent in "Gone With the Wind" (a book that abundantly deserves the charge of racism). Jim may be uneducated, but he is nobody's fool; and his dignity and nobility in the face of adversity is evident throughout the book.So -- is "Huckleberry Finn" a racist book? No. It's of its time and for its time and ours as well, portraying a black man with sensitivity, dignity, and sympathy. If shallow, ignorant readers see Jim as a caricature and an object of derision, that's their problem. Hopefully they may mature enough in their lifetime to appreciate this book as one of the greatest classics of American literature.And for those who might be wondering -- this reviewer is black.Judy Lind

Amazing Edition of a Classic Work By mp Mark Twain's 1885 novel, "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," has had a long history, during which it has been and still is both reviled and celebrated. Essentially the story of the picaresque travels and adventures of a young Missouri boy and his friend Jim, a runaway slave, in 1840's America. Taking cues from books like "Don Quixote" and Jonathan Swift's works, and a fraught relationship to Sir Walter Scott's historical romances and those of his protege, James Fenimore Cooper, Twain constructs a masterful first person narrative, through the eyes of 14 year old Huckleberry and a profound and hilarious satire on American culture."Huckleberry Finn" begins in tension - Huckleberry's fortune and wardship with the well-meaning widow Douglas has him in a bind. The widow wants to 'sivilize' him, taking him out of the happy go lucky, easy going lifestyle he loves, while his fortune of six thousand dollars has him living in perpetual anxiety of his father, a violent drunkard whose absence only makes Huck more anxious about his return. When Huck's pap does return, sure enough, Huck is remanded, more or less, to Pap's custody, and kept prisoner in a secluded cabin. Though he is no longer being 'sivilized,' his time with Pap becomes more and more tense and lonely, driving Huck to stage his own death and run away from Pap and from civilization. Early in his escape, on a small island in the Mississippi River, he meets Jim, a slave from his town of St. Petersburg, who has run away, planning to raise money in the north to buy his family out of slavery. Together, Jim and Huck form a friendship that will take them up and down and all around the Mississippi River."Huckleberry Finn" deals with a great many social issues, and none more interestingly than with conventional morality. With Huck, he effectively creates an outside position from which to view American culture as he sees it, with all of its pretentions and faults. Huck doesn't put much stock in widow Douglass' or Miss Watson's strictly defined notions of religion or morality - throughout the novel, we see him in constant conflict with himself over the fine line between what is considered right and wrong, and what is accepted as such. Huck's inner negotiations with prayer and morality, good and evil, are at the heart of the novel. His post-Emersonian, proto-Nietzschean manner of dealing with himself and his relationship to society is fascinating and compelling. His relationship with the runaway slave Jim, of course, is also a focal point of the novel - the ways in which Jim and Huck depend on and care for each other is both moving and of course, socially and politically suggestive and significant, especially in the historical context of the novel, both the setting, prior to the Civil War, and its published era, at the tail end of Reconstruction. Those who would be offended by racial epithets in common parlance during this time period would be advised to take historical context into account before railing against the novel's racial politics - if one gets unduly caught up in nitpicking such things, one falls into the trap of the satire, become a target in the process.As satire or black comedy, "Huckleberry Finn" has at every moment the ability to make us laugh out loud at ourselves and at the situations in the novel - from the fraudulent actions of the King and the Duke, to Tom Sawyer's needlessly elaborate scheme to free Jim from slavery, to well-born cultured families feuding, to all the cross-dressing that goes on in the novel (and there is a lot of it!). Again, though, as black comedy, we may often catch ourselves laughing, then wondering, hey, that isn't very funny - this is the brilliance of Twain's artistic achievement; to make us laugh while looking critically at ourselves. A book that is uniquely American, Twain's humour, wit, and style contribute to give us a look at both Antebellum and post-Reconstruction America through the eyes of innocence and experience, to see how far the nation had come since the days of Washington, and how far it still had (and has) to go.This 1998 Norton Critical Third edition of "Huckleberry Finn" is truly amazing. It restores the entire text from the manuscript, including among other things, the "Raftsman's episode" and all of the original illustrations. The supplementary materials in this edition are top-shelf also, with excerpts covering the controversy surrounding the novel, from its publication to the present. The critical selections are excellent as well, especially the incisive and yet startlingly personal essays by T.S. Eliot and Toni Morrison. This is probably the best current edition out there of this tremendous, and tremendously complicated American classic.

By Dennis Phillips Back during my school days this was still not a book that was considered to be politically incorrect and so I was supposed to read it. As was far too often the case, I got by on little more than watching the movie version and never bothered to read this masterpiece. A few months ago I picked up a copy to put in my library for my grandson to use when he got old enough to go to school. Unfortunately this has been classified as a children's book and so I had little intention of reading it when I bought it.After discussing a book about President Grant and Mark Twain with a friend I decided that I should read this book and I soon found out just how much of an adventure I had been missing. Twain's well deserved reputation as a storyteller is on clear display in this book from cover to cover. The reader is drawn into the lives of the characters to the point of being really disturbed when something bad happens to them. Sure, they steal and they lie but you will love them in spite of everything.The story basically follows the adventures of young Huckleberry Finn and a runaway slave named Jim. Finn is trying to escape has father and the efforts of the townspeople to civilize him while Jim is trying to escape slavery. More to the point, Jim is trying to escape being sold down the river, which was always a worry for slaves in the upper south.There is a strong moral point to this book as Huck slowly learns to love Jim as a friend and not think of his skin color. Early on Huck is worried about helping a runaway slave and isn't sure what to do. Having been raised in Missouri, Huck has been taught that helping a slave run away is one of the worst sins imaginable and that African-Americans are pretty much worthless except as slaves. It takes a while for the truth to come to Huck but he finds that he is determined to help his friend get his freedom, no matter what. Huck ends up risking his own life to do just that.This book is a pure joy to read and I suggest you read it without looking for a political agenda. Just let the story flow and enjoy each word. The dialects used may slow you down a bit at first but they add so much to the flow of the book that they are quite indispensable. This is a wonderful story, full of youthful innocence and backwoods charm. Just one little warning though, once you start reading you won't be able to put this book down.

Only downside is that, in part because the answer keys are also large print (4/page), the book is very fat and heavy. I have to use a book holder and it just barely balances on the thing.

It is a more contemporary-sounding work with parts for children and Alto and Tenor soloists, along with the usual SATB parts. Generally straightforward with some more challenging parts in it. I think this will become part of our usual rotation of favorites. "Unto Us" is the shining star of this cantata and could be performed separately.

Sacred Songs and Solos By Chris Singh This is a collection of hymns and sacred songs that I grew up listening to...and I longed to possess! There's enough to keep a choir singing all year through and I am so happy that I was able to buy a copy. I had been looking for this for years and only recently did I think in terms of looking for it on Amazon. I bought a 'used' copy but when it arrived it looked as good as new with the rear cover alone being slightly torn...so I'm doubly happy!

Erkes I'm not usually looking for adult coloring books, but this looks like a really well-designed and interesting coloring book for a gift for my adult daughter. By Debra Grogan When we are kids we colored outside the lines.....we used purple for the sun and green for cats, whatever color would strike our fancy that day....as an artist, sometimes I get stuck in the rigid confines of the work I do and need to stay inside the lines more than I would like to. I spent a few minutes playing and coloring with some markers and coloring outside the lines......sometimes you just need to take a deep breath and have a little bit of fun.....Take a few minutes out of your day and go back to that childhood moment, the one where you got a new coloring book, the pages were clean and beautiful, you opened a new box of crayons and then created your newest masterpiece! I had so much fun I may even put mine on my fridge! This book is filled with great illustrations and many positive thoughts! It certainly made me Color Myself HAPPY!

About the Author Mike Medaglia is a cartoonist, illustrator and comics editor. He is the co-editor of dotComics, a comics anthology linking webcomics and print, and contributes to The Comix Reader. A Zen Buddhist practitioner, he draws a monthly meditation comic for The Huffington Post and edited the spiritual comics anthology Wu Wei. One Year Wiser, a book of 365 illustrated meditations, will be published by SelfMadeHero in September 2015. He lives in London. He blogs at oneyearwiser.com.
