A twelve-year cancer survivor and oncology rehabilitation specialist, Dr. Julie K. Silver wrote After Cancer Treatment to help others recover from the exhaustion and physical devastation that often follow treatment. This new edition of the book, retitled Before and After Cancer Treatment, describes improved therapies, better delivery of care, holistic care options, and energetics. In covering the benefits of prehabilitation strategies, which improve physical and emotional strength before beginning therapy, the book adds another dimension to the experience of cancer treatment. Dr. Silver fills this survivor-oriented book with exercise and diet recommendations as well as step-by-step instructions for fighting fatigue, monitoring mood, and overcoming setbacks. Readers are encouraged to set balanced goals, take time to heal, and consult both conventional and alternative medicine.

Most people will live for many years after their initial cancer diagnosis—often cured or in remission. Some will live with cancer as a chronic condition. The goal is always to live life to the fullest, which means feeling as strong as possible—physically and emotionally. Dr. Silver recommends daring to dream again and preparing for the future. Wherever they are in their own journey with cancer, readers will find here a personal, practical, and powerful guide to recovery.

The key to the book’s success, is the mixture of compassionate wisdom and intelligent advice derived from the author’s unique perspective.

Review

Dr. Silver's book encompasses not just emotional and physical healing but spiritual as well. Her credentials as a young mother and cancer survivor, in addition to being a physiatrist with a specialization in rehab medicine, make her work both authoritative and compassionate.

(Paula J. Anastasia, RN, MN, OCN, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles)

A diagnosis of cancer changes one's life forever. After her diagnosis, Dr. Silver chose to continue healing―this time, healing herself. Her book is a gift to all cancer patients.

(Irene Pollin, MSW, author of Taking Charge and Medical Crisis Counseling)

Dr. Silver, who has faced cancer as both doctor and patient, has written an excellent practical guide for patients navigating the psychological and physical demands of a diagnosis of cancer.

(Raymond Lenhard, MD, past president, American Cancer Society)

Dr. Silver is a remarkably insightful patient and physician. She has built upon her own professional experiences in rehabilitative medicine and her personal experience with a breast cancer diagnosis and subsequent treatment. She seeks to make lemonade out of lemons, and she has done so with remarkable success.

(Eric P. Winer, MD, director, Breast Oncology Center, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute)

A hands-on guide to survival issues: exercise, diet, fatigue, mental health, spirituality, and how to seek assistance from both Western and alternative medicine... Highly recommended.

(Library Journal)

This is one you need... Silver offers excellent descriptions of mind-body treatments... I like that she understands.

(Cure)

Like her practice, it draws on evidence-based medicine about what works to help people heal.

(Elizabeth Cooney Dispatch)

An invaluable reference for patients and health professionals as they navigate the murky waters of cancer treatment and survivorship.

(Stephanie Ross, PhD Oncology)

Belongs in any serious health library or collection focusing on cancer recovery.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Best Gift for every friend diagnosed with cancer By J. Grimes We all want to do something active to help any friend diagnosed with cancer, so along with that first meal that you bring the family, include this insightful and practical guide! Dr. Silver speaks from experience on both ends, because she is not only a cancer survivor, but a physician who specialized in rehab. Add into the mix that she is also a working mom, devoted to her kids, and understands the struggles inherent with balancing all of the above. Therefore, Dr. Silver's advice combines high end evidence-based medical recommendations with practical applications of that research, from sleep hygiene, complementary medicine and even prayer, to goal setting and guidance on such issues as appetite, "chemo brain", fatigue, setbacks and what to tell your children about cancer. Kudos to Dr. Silver for this invaluable resource!
