Cosmetic surgery had its beginnings in the early 20th century, using techniques that evolved from the first two World Wars and the Viet Nam era. The ethics of medicine and surgery were different at that time. Advertising was looked down upon and surgeons were taught to become masters of their craft, slowly building their reputations by word of mouth in response to good results. Advertising changed everything and caught the attention of entrepreneurs. Many untrained doctors avoided the scrutiny of hospitals by performing extensive procedures in their offices, and deaths from cosmetic surgery became almost commonplace. South Florida was the epicenter of this new phenomenon and if it weren’t so serious it would have been comical. The media accounts gave the impression they were holding tryouts for the Darwin Awards. Patients selected their surgeon, not on the basis of training, experience, reputation and expertise, but rather on their medical marketing campaign. This is a completely fictional account inspired by some of those true stories written by a renowned and highly respected plastic surgeon with a large practice of many years in South Florida, one of the top centers of plastic surgery in America.

About the Author Dr. Persoff was born and raised in south Florida and received his medical degree at the University of Miami. He joined the US Navy, doing his internship and becoming a Flight Surgeon and Paramedic in Subic Bay, Philippines during the Viet Nam conflict. Later, he trained as a general surgeon, and then trained as a plastic surgeon with the world famous doctor Thomas D Cronin, the inventor of the Silicone breast implant. His career in plastic surgery spanned 35 years in south Florida.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A colorful work of fiction By David Levens As a fellow plastic surgeon in south Florida I was eager to read this book. Dr. Persoff was one of the first plastic surgeons I met when I first came to start a practice here 27 years ago. Well respected by his peers, his personal perspective on the negative influences of greed and unethical business practices on the profession of cosmetic plastic surgery is poignant. His cast of particularly unsavory characters behind the "Nightmare Spa" is colorful and makes for a quick, entertaining read.

With all the plastic surgery going on and all the bad results we see every day, this book is a realeye-opener. It's a must read for anyone contemplating surgery, as well as being frankly entertaining for anyone. I couldn't put it down.It's the first time a plastic surgeon gave an inside view of what could only have been written by an authority such as Dr. Persoff.I commend him for his courage.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A great book By Michael Shacham I just finished reading Dr. Persoff’s book, Nightmare Spa and found that I could not put it down. It reads like a thriller. However, it is much more than sex and bad surgery. It is a light that shines on a world much darker than I could have imagined, and far more familiar to doctors like Myron than me. I was actually sorry when I finished reading it,The end came too quickly. Thank you for writing the book. It was entertaining and wittywith some very serious advice for people contemplating cosmetic surgery.Michael Shacham,Sculptor
