Immediately falling sick with symptoms I went back to the doctor. She told me no way was it the shot that was making me sick. She was concerned there was something wrong in my brain and from there I ended up at two different neurologists, a chiropractor, many nurse practitions, an ear nose and throat doctor and on and on. I was eventually diagnosed with fibromyalgia. (...)No doctor could cure me. They all gave me various drugs, which I took willing.. (foolish me!!) but not one of them cured me. They only further POISONED MY SYSTEM!I was cured by one thing and one thing only! FASTING AND A MUCUS FREE DIET! I have researched fasting and diet for healing purposes extensively. My stack of books on the subjects stacks waist high. This is by far, hands down, the book I recommend the highest. If you've read Fast Your Way To Health and/or The Miracle of Fasting, this one is even better!! A+++I URGE you to read this book! If you apply what he teaches you will change your life. You WILL regain a greater health than you have ever known!

Gamble Prof. Ehret's ideas and methods can change your life and unleash a tsunami of energy from within you. But they're not easy.It has taken me years to ease into and then finally enjoy a healthy lifestyle. And it's been disappointing to see how difficult it is for some of my friends and family to end their poor eating habits and change their lifestyle.I wouldn't consider this book as a "starting guide." It's more for people who are already committed to changing their lifestyle. The author's ideas are as undiluted as his politically incorrect worldview. To be fair, he died nearly 90 years ago and was unrestrained by the social pressures of our current hyper-sensitive society. For a short book, he covers a lot of ground, including acidic and alkalizing foods, transitioning to a healthy diet and fasting. The transition diet he espouses is extremely important because Ehret's idea of fasting isn't today's MTV-type weekend cleanse. His idea of a fast is more of the biblical kind - 40 days or so.One caveat - when you do begin to change your lifestyle, it's best to use a product to make sure you get all of the nutrients you need at the beginning. If not, your "cleansing crisis" could be so severe that you'd simply abandon your goals. Even when starting on a simple juicing regime, it's best to take it slowly at the outset. In summary, I think this is a great book with proven concepts that will work for you. But just realize the guy's hard-core. Take it easy in the beginning and build on your successes and stay with it. It's definitely worth it.

By A Customer I've had rumathoid arthritis for 15 years and the ONLY "treatment" with positive results was this diet of Ehret. No more pain killers, no more acne (thanks to cortisone etc.) no more depression and NO pain or swelling. All allergies disappeared and I can eat almost anything in moderation. Had candida (chronic) - this also disappeared after the fast and never returned thanks to this MUCUSLESS DIET of Ehret. I don't miss any animal proteins in my diet and have no cravings! My husband and daughter loves this diet - they feel so clean! Read the book - it will make all the difference!

First published in 1946, Viktor Frankl's memoir Man's Search for Meaning remains one of the most influential books of the last century, selling over ten million copies worldwide and having been embraced by successive generations of readers captivated by its author's philosophical journey in the wake of the Holocaust. This long-overdue reappraisal examines Frankl's life and intellectual evolution anew, from his early immersion in Freudian and Adlerian theory to his development of the "third Viennese school" amid the National Socialist domination of professional psychotherapy. It teases out the fascinating contradictions and ambiguities surrounding his years in Nazi Europe, including the experimental medical procedures he oversaw in occupied Austria and a stopover at the Auschwitz concentration camp far briefer than has commonly been assumed. Throughout, author Timothy Pytell gives a penetrating but fair-minded account of a man whose paradoxical embodiment of asceticism, celebrity, tradition, and self-reinvention drew together the complex strands of twentieth-century intellectual life.

Viktor Frankl's Search for Meaning: An Emblematic 20th-Century Life (Making Sense of History), by Timothy Pytell

Review

"The book has extensive notes and a major bibliography that includes interviews, periodicals, and unpublished documents. Frankl's logotherapy-from logos, meaning-emphasizes creativity, love, and our attitude toward 'unalterable fate.' Some critics view logotherapy as superficial, offering consolation more than challenge. Intellectually demanding, this is a scholarly, commendable biography and intellectual history. Lay readers will be challenged; psychologists and historians will be grateful." · Library Journal (starred review)

"Pytell's book fills an important gap in the literature on one of the most famous and, until now, least controversial psychotherapists of the twentieth century. Unlike earlier works on Frankl, this book avoids hagiography and places Frankl in the full political, social, historical, and intellectual contexts of his times. It is the first work to synthesize Frankl's life and work in his time and place." · Geoffrey Cocks, Albion College

About the Author

Timothy Pytell is Chair of the History department at California State University, San Bernardino. He published an abridged version of this biography, titled Viktor Frankl: Das Ende eines Mythos, in German in 2005.

Every day around the world, heritage interpreters fearlessly work to connect people with places. Normally, their programs go off without a hitch, and become the stuff of legend. However, as in life, things don’t always go as planned. The Interpreter's Big Book of Disasters is a guide to teach you what others learned the hard way. These are the disaster stories that are shared around a campfire, passed down from grizzled veteran interpreters to fresh young recruits. They were never written down in training manuals… until now. The book is entirely the result of voluntary contributions from interpreters across Canada and beyond. The stories, illustrations, design and editing were all done by interpreters, free of charge, for the benefit of the interpretive community. It is the outcome of a whole community of interpreters coming together. You will laugh, cheer, and maybe even cry, but most of all you will learn how to save yourself from repeating the same mistakes.

The Interpreter's Big Book of Disasters, by Interpretation Canada

About the Author Pamela Murray discovered that interpretation was her calling when her summer job sent her to an Interpretation Canada conference in Manning Provincial Park in 1998. After many years as a front-line interpreter in provincial and national parks in British Columbia and Alberta, she is currently the Lead Interpreter at Milner Gardens & Woodland, as well as a member of Interpretation Canada’s board. Calvert Martin fell in love with the field of interpretation as a nature centre volunteer over 25 years ago. Since those early days, he has worked at institutions across Canada, such as Manitoba Provincial Parks, the Vancouver Aquarium, Assiniboine Park Zoo, and Metro Vancouver Regional Parks. Today, he works as a Visitor Experience Advisor for Parks Canada, runs an interpretive consultancy called Frog in the Pocket, and sits on Interpretation Canada’s board as Past Chair. André Y. Laurin discovered his passion for interpretation over 15 years ago during a cooperative education placement at a science centre when he was in high school. Having worked at an urban outreach centre, a national historic site and now as Interpretation Coordinator at Prince Edward Island National Park, André has accumulated a variety of interpretive disasters for his toolkit. A self-proclaimed naturalist-in-perpetual-training, André is a certified Heritage Interpreter and current member of Interpretation Canada’s board.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. that it s one of the best first person accounts of the people that actually worked ... By E. Winfrey I'm slightly prejudiced because my comments appear very often in the book, but I have to say, objectively, that it s one of the best first person accounts of the people that actually worked with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr on their music recordings and their personal life and times in Nashville. They touched many famous musicians while they were here and left many admirers among those they met.It was my personal pleasure to have recorded Paul, Linda and the rest of Wings during a two week span in July of 1974. Among the seven songs we worked on, "Junior's Farm" and "Sally G" were break out hits. On his recently remastered "Venus and Mars" album, Paul was nice enough to give me personal credit for mixing "Hey Diddle" on the bonus album that was included. The one questioned I've always been asked was... " Is Paul a nice guy to work with"He was absolutely one of the nicest and most down to earth artists that I have ever worked with.

The Inside Out Story is a way of identifying the bare essentials of different types of stories by turning them inside out. Every well developed main character has two goals -- an interior goal and an exterior goal (inside-out). If you are able to clearly establish your character's goals, take them on a journey that -- despite great adversity -- ultimately leads to the accomplishment of these goals, you are already leagues ahead of most filmmakers.

New York Times bestselling author and ambush journalist Jason Mattera sets his sights on his next big target: crony liberals, including Al Gore, Carlos Slim, Harry Reid, and Jay Z, whose riches come at taxpayer expense. From billionaire business tycoons like George Soros and Warren Buffett to movie industry moguls like Jeffrey Katzenberg and Stephen Spielberg, American liberals are using government breaks and shortcuts to pervert the free market. These “rich bastards” leverage crony connections to bag millions for phony “green companies” that go bust, vacuum public coffers to build glitzy stadiums, utilize little-known tax loopholes to loot $1.5 billion for Hollywood movies, and more. They use government to rig the game in their favor and leave taxpayers holding the bill. And when government gets in the business of picking winners and losers through bailouts and tax breaks, free market competition begins to atrophy. That’s what big government leftists—and corporate Republicans-in-name-only—want to happen. In this explosive, funny-as-hell investigative exposé, Mattera reveals the infuriating schemes that result when the filthy rich combine cronyism and capitalism. Crapitalism pulls back the curtain on a cast of cronyites who make millions taking advantage of taxpayers—and still brag about how they’re looking out for the little guy.

9 Jay-Z

Made my money quick then back to the streets but Still sittin on blades . . . sippin that ray . . . hustling —Jay-Z, “Big Pimpin’ ”1 Shawn Carter is a self-described former drug dealer. It’s important to remember this, because it helps explain the motives and actions of Carter’s eventual rap persona Jay-Z. Raised by a single mother in Brooklyn’s Marcy projects, Carter attended the same high school as future rappers Notorious B.I.G. and Busta Rhymes.2 Must’ve been a pretty cool music class. Carter dropped out, though, and like a lot of hustlers from the way, started slinging rock and writing lyrics. He claims he was shot at three times growing up. So he eventually stopped pushing dope and started selling records. It turned out to be a good career move. After twelve albums, nineteen Grammys, a fashion line, restaurants, and even skin care products, Jay-Z has built a cultural and institutional empire. As he raps, he isn’t just a businessman. He’s “a business, man.” Forbes estimates his net worth at nearly $500 million. I have no problem with that. Jay-Z built his empire through talent, drive, and white teenagers’ desire to alienate their parents by listening to rap music. Good for him. He is also married to actress/pop star and absolute knockout Beyoncé Knowles. I definitely have no problem with that. But he retained one thing from his drug-dealing past: making money above all. In their world, amassing your personal fortune happens to come at the expense of the health and even life of your customers, and the quality of life for the people living in the neighborhood you’re working in. So what? Drug dealers suck in profit and leave empty lives, destroyed families, and shattered communities in their wake. They satisfy a demand, but they aren’t making anything better except their bank accounts. This has been the Shawn Carter way. As part of his empire, Jay-Z purchased a minority share of the NBA franchise New Jersey Nets. As part of the plan of the majority owner, developer Bruce Ratner, to move the Nets to Brooklyn and build them a new state-of-the-art arena, Jay-Z became the unofficial mascot. He was the front man for the project, appearing at groundbreakings, posing for pictures with kids, and helping to design the new Nets logo. His fingerprints are all over everything. Jay-Z even owned part of the new arena itself, called the Barclays Center, after a lucrative deal secured the naming rights. In some ways, Ratner and his team delivered on their promise to Brooklyn. But the arena, and the overall development surrounding it, stand as a monument to the power and peril of Crapitalism. The project, like Jay-Z’s early earnings as a drug dealer, profited only a select few. And Jay-Z sold out his roots to do it. The story of the Barclays Center, and the Atlantic Yards Project it spearheaded, is perhaps one of the great criminal capers of the past century. Only it was all done legally. And New York tax dollars paid for it. Ratner, the developer, fell in love with a piece of property located above a railway yard, with trains depositing Long Islanders stopping there, and also serving as the hub for numerous subway lines. But as author Malcolm Gladwell points out, Ratner had a problem.3 Half of the property Ratner wanted to buy and turn into luxury apartments wasn’t empty. Or for sale. Ratner knew that, under certain conditions, the government could actually seize private land in the name of economic development under the eminent domain statutes. The most famous example of this gave us the Supreme Court ruling Kelo v. New London, where the seizure of private property was actually upheld in a 5–4 decision.4 And part of the decision, written by then-justice Sandra Day O’Connor, suggested that one scenario that would allow for the “sovereign” to transfer the land it seized to a private party was if the entities “make the property available for the public’s use—such as with a railroad, a public utility, or a stadium.”5 So Ratner bought the New Jersey Nets, and decided to build an arena in Brooklyn. But how could Ratner convince New Yorkers to seize other people’s land, move a middling basketball franchise across the New York Bay, and give the rest to a wealthy developer? Enter Jay-Z. Ratner sold a minority share of both the Nets and the new arena to the rapper. In return, Jay-Z became the head Brooklyn booster. The New York Times hailed him as the “unofficial ambassador” of the Barclays Center. The Daily News called Jay-Z an “NBA franchise figurehead.” And National Public Radio labeled it “Jay-Z’s Brooklyn.” Again, more power to him. I don’t have a problem with him getting credit for bringing the Nets to town. I have a problem with you and me getting the bill. Then-mayor Michael Bloomberg was so enamored with the idea of returning a professional sports team to Brooklyn (they haven’t had one since Jackie Robinson and the Dodgers bolted to Los Angeles) that, with Jay-Z rallying the public’s support, he helped push the project through. Ratner and his cronies secured $761 million in taxpayer subsidies and conned the government to snatch up the buildings and land whose owners had the misfortune to be located on property that Ratner and Jay-Z wanted. It seems, however, that Jigga be Big Pimpin’ best when Uncle Sam writes checks. But when tax dollars don’t pad the bottom line, not so much. His 40/40 Club is foundering—the Chicago location never opened, and the “80,000 square-foot Las Vegas club complete with 80 plasma TV’s totally flopped,” shutting its doors eight months after the grand opening.6 His one in Atlantic City closed down as well.7 Jay-Z also lost “$50 million in bad hotel development projects” in New York and “defaulted on a $24 million dollar mortgage” when two other real estate deals went sour.8 Hey, maybe Hova’s not a “business, man” after all. Just a Crapitalist. He, like the developer Bruce Ratner, gorges taxpayers to finance his grand projects. But paying taxes on those projects is something different entirely. After bamboozling the borough for money and land, what did Ratner do? He sued New York City to try to lower his tax bill. He later withdrew the lawsuit and stated it was filed “inadvertently.”9 Someone in accounting must’ve reminded Ratner that part of the deal he struck with the city was that his tax bill for the next decade is one dollar a year.10 Really. Ratner also turned around and, several years later, sold the controlling interest of the team to Mikhail Prokhorov, a Russian oil tycoon. After all, as Malcolm Gladwell noted, Ratner didn’t care about basketball in the first place. Only money: Once he won his eminent domain case, the team had served its purpose. He’s not a basketball fan. He’s a real estate developer. The asset he wanted to hang on to was the arena, and with good reason. According to Ratner, the Barclays Center (the naming right of which, by the way, earned him a cool $400 million) is going to bring in somewhere around $120 million in revenue a year. Operating costs will be $30 million. The mortgage comes to $50 million. That leaves $35 million in profit on Ratner’s $350 million up-front investment, for an annual return of 10 percent. Not to be outdone, Jay-Z rapped about his involvement and motivation in the project, lyrics that drip with civic pride and community responsibility. Or none of that: Would’ve brought the Nets to Brooklyn for free Except I made millions off it, you fuckin’ dweeb11 Classy. This is the same guy who goes on Bill Maher’s show and acts concerned about the widening gap between the “have[s] and have not[s] . . . it’s going to be a problem that no amount of police can solve.”12 Sort of humorous to hear talk about widening economic disparities from a guy who raps about his money, fame, use of high-end goods and jewelry, and mansions. But that’s nothing new for Jay-Z. His lyrics say one thing. His lifestyle says another. His biggest hit, quiet as it’s kept, is hypocrisy. And his iPod’s got it on repeat. This is the same guy whom Al Sharpton (who is supported by Ratner, the project’s developer) compared to Jackie Robinson, because of Jay-Z’s involvement in the whole Nets project. Sharpton said that “we’ve gone from Jackie [Robinson, who integrated baseball as a Brooklyn Dodger] to Jay-Z, where we can not only play the game but we can own a piece of the game.”13 But Jay-Z sold out his homeboys through and through. Ratner admitted he designed the mall across the street from the Barclays Center in such a way so as to keep “tough kids from the neighborhood” out of it.14 Anyone who’s spent any time in the area knows what Ratner meant: black youth. This is the project Jay-Z helped bring back to his hometown. Designed intentionally to keep the kids he rolled with as a teenager away. But it makes sense. While Jay-Z brags about texting with Obama and even released a remix song called “My President Is Black,” it turns out that Hova is into black empowerment only when it’s good for him. Sure, he is a proud black man. But all you have to do is look at the arena he helped build to see that the color he really cares about is green. The new Barclays Center features several amenities for the well-to-do. In fact, the arena’s website touts one of the most aristocratic touches, “inspired by Jay-Z himself.” The Vault is an exclusive level that features only eleven suites, lounge seating, and flat-screen TVs. That it doesn’t offer an actual view of the court hasn’t stopped anyone from shelling out the $550,000 a year it costs to own a suite.15 But while Jay-Z may be living the high life, schmoozing with tycoon developers and Russian oligarchs, and getting the endorsement of bought-and-paid-for civil rights advocates like Sharpton, his business affiliations haven’t exactly kept hope alive. Three luxury box owners who are black have sued the arena for $4 million because of repeated discriminatory practices. The plaintiffs say the House That Jay-Z Built ignored any orders they tried to place and accused the plaintiffs of skipping out on tabs. The suit even alleges the suite was investigated by law enforcement, the owners say, “because they are black.” The rest of the luxury suite owners, per the complaint, are “treated like royalty.”16 It honestly isn’t that shocking. Like the mall across the street built to keep the “tough” kids out, Hova likes to have it both ways. One of Jay-Z’s big moneymakers is his RocaWear fashion line. You probably see it all over the country in malls and stand-alone big-box stores. Nothing wrong with that. But you might not know or expect a guy who sells Occupy Wall Street shirts to also have a deal to sell $58,000 crocodile-skin jackets at Barneys—a store designed for the one-percenters. When Barneys had a little dustup over a couple of incidents of racial profiling at its store, many called on Jay-Z to pull his line from the retailer in a show of racial solidarity. The line stayed, and Jay-Z’s “New York Holiday Collection” brought in over $1 million in proceeds. To be fair, the sale was an effort to raise money for the Shawn Carter Foundation, which purportedly will use the money to send inner-city youth to college. But then again, they also said the real estate deal would bring jobs. The Barclays Center was one piece of a larger development plan known as the Atlantic Yards. Part of the reason Ratner secured the go-ahead and millions in taxpayer freebies to proceed with the plan was that, in addition to the new arena, other aspects of the Atlantic Yards project would include affordable housing, retail, and more. Most important, though, Ratner said the project would bring jobs. In fact, the official slogan for the redevelopment campaign was “Jobs, Housing, Hoops.”17 Jay-Z, who reportedly designed the Nets logo himself, was quoted as saying the project had already brought “thousands and thousands of jobs” to the area.18 I know Jay dropped out of high school, but you expect a former drug dealer to be able to count. Actual estimates at the time had the total number of jobs somewhere near five hundred. Moreover, many of the jobs offered, subsidized by over three-quarters of a billion dollars in tax breaks and benefits, are part-time only.19 To make matters worse, an analysis by the New York City Independent Budget Office concluded that the project would fail to spur a bonanza of tax revenue as proponents had claimed and instead would end up costing taxpayers $40 million.20 Oh, and that affordable housing that was promised? Snatched up by the borough’s burgeoning hipster population. With rent around $2,000 a month, it ain’t exactly for the average hustler, yo.21 This wasn’t the first time Jay-Z’s been pimped out in an effort to hustle taxpayers. You may recall from the chapter on Crapitalist Greg Meeks that New York’s inspector general blasted the bidding process for a contract to operate a racetrack and casino, in the Ozone Park neighborhood of Queens. Aqueduct Entertainment Group, the investment consortium that won the lucrative deal, offered a lower up-front licensing fee—$100 million lower—but they had Team Meeks on their side, which meant insider dealing, a shady selection process, and a contract worth billions. The contract was eventually rescinded and the disgraced governor who helped AEG land the deal, David Paterson, dropped his election bid. But there was Jay-Z, in the mix of this mess, too. While the inspector general’s report revealed that Jay-Z had “scant knowledge” of the proposal, AEG’s main financial backers may have been trying to use Jay-Z as a one-man PR machine to curry favor with the governor’s office.22 He and Governor Paterson were hanging out in the Hamptons and becoming buds right around the same time Jay-Z was being wooed to join AEG as a minority investor.23 While the self-appointed “best rapper alive” eventually jumped ship because of the state investigation, his being used as a “hype man”24 to barrel over taxpayers is familiar. Where have we seen that movie before? Oh yeah, I remember. And it’s hard to miss in downtown Brooklyn: the Barclays Center. Or as the eyesore’s been nicknamed, the Rusty Turtle. Thanks, playa. Appreciate that. •  •  • That Jay-Z would voluntarily get in bed with corrupt people shouldn’t surprise us. Jay-Z’s investment firm is called Gain Global Investments. His partner at Gain is a dude named David Rosenberg. Rosenberg is exactly the type of guy you want to be around, that is, if you’re into lawsuits and being the subject of numerous state and federal investigations. Rosenberg’s Ohio-based collection agency, Unifund CCR Partners, has been accused of fraudulent tactics, including “going after people who’ve paid, implying they’re lawyers and suing years after the last payment notice was sent.” And there’s probably something to the avalanche of lawsuits because Rosenberg’s company has settled dozens of them. Like the case involving Queens man Jose Luis Muniz. Unifund harassed him to pay off a credit card debt that Muniz had resolved a decade earlier.25 Muniz sued and Unifund settled. Not exactly a person you’d want to invest with, right? But Jay-Z does. And that’s just another track on the same hypocritical album for Carter. A guy who made $63 million one year but donated only $6,000 to his own charity.26 Because that’s not what thugs, pimps, or drug dealers do. They don’t give back. They take. Jay-Z is a taker. They say pimpin’ ain’t easy. But for former drug dealer turned Crapitalist Shawn Carter, taking sure seems to be.

I was fortunate to receive an advanced copy of Crapitalism By Avid Reader I was fortunate to receive an advanced copy of Crapitalism, and burned through it in a day. Mattera's writing style is edgy, funny, witty and his observations of libs behaving badly is spot-on...a combo that few conservatives are able to package together. I loved Mattera's other books Obama Zombies and Hollywood Hypocrites, and this book is just as great. I really appreciated that while the tone was humor-filled, the book was a solid, hard-hitting expose on Americas most wanted crony capitalists. By martin h I really liked this book for many reasons, but here are two specific examples: This unique book gives a great advantage to actors by clearly pointing out how to get as much screen time as possible, AND it also teaches editors what to look for in an actor's performance. Once an actor has the awareness of some basic and important principles of Editing, and once an editor becomes more aware of what to look for in an actor's performance, each becomes better at their craft and their art. This book is really two books in one.I discuss the concepts of your book in my Editing classroom as a way to give a unique perspective on the basics of Editing.Thank you Jordan!

Excellent book and one you will reference often By Marianna Montague Excellent book that every actor, actress, editor, director and producer should read. There are several “nuggets of goodness” hidden in this book which I hadn’t even considered important. I do now. You will learn what the editor does and the countless hours of footage they have to go thru, as an actress or actor, how to not get cut from a scenes and so much more. Coming from the editing side of the business and assisting so many editors with the tools of their craft (Avid), the book was simply fascinating and I read it in one sitting. Definitely a book to get and I have a feeling it will be one that I reference often.

By ZG Tim Phillips, on-camera acting teacher, has been recommending this book to us for 2 years, ever since he heard from a student that this was in the works. We thought it would be called "I Love It When An Actor Knows When To Blink." I read it (highlighting the crap out of it) in one cross-country flight. I couldn't put it down. It's easy, clean, and full of immediate practical application. I feel so much better-prepared knowing what the tools I use as an actor are working for, and how they are translated, on the other side of the camera. Thank you thank you!

What Is Man?, first published by Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) in 1906, is a dialog between a young man and an older man jaded to the world. It involves ideas of destiny and free will, as well as of psychological egoism. The Old Man asserted that the human being is merely a machine, and nothing more. The Young Man objects, and asks him to go into particulars and furnish his reasons for his position.

From the Publisher **Performed by 2001 Grammy nominated Carl Reiner, for Best Performance in spoken word audio, for Mark Twain's Letters from Earth.**

About the Author Samuel Langhorne Clemens (pen name Mark Twain) was born on November 30, 1835 in Florida, Missouri. In 1839 the Clemens family moved to Hannibal, Missouri, on the Mississippi River where young Sam experienced the excitement and colorful sights of the waterfront. Like many authors of his day he had little formal education. His education came from the print shops and newspaper offices where he worked as a youth. He first wrote under the pen name, "Mark Twain" (meaning "two fathoms" in riverboat-talk) in 1863. "Twain" wrote his first popular story, The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County in 1865. He continued to travel as a correspondent for various newspapers and in 1869 his travel letters from Europe were collected into the popular book, The Innocents Abroad. Encouraged by his success Twain married Olivia Langdon and settled down in Hartford, Connecticut to his most productive years as a writer. Between 1873 and 1889 he wrote seven novels including his Mississippi River books as well as The Prince and the Pauper (1882) and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (1889). As Twain's life and career progressed he became increasingly pessimistic, losing much of the humorous, cocky tone of his earlier years. More and more of his work expressed the gloomy view that all human motives are ultimately selfish. Even so Twain is best remembered as a humorist who used his sharp wit and comic exaggeration to attack the false pride and self-importance he saw in humanity.

From AudioFile Is man nothing more than a machine, incapable of free will? What are the factors shaping his actions and decisions? Mark Twain entertainingly posed and answered these questions in a volume published anonymously. Twain's biting view of mankind spares no one, but it contains rays of hope. Carl Reiner takes the roles of both teacher and pupil in Twain's Socratic dialogue. Reiner captures both the humor and the serious underpinnings of Twain's work, although in giving the more natural voice to the teacher while making the student seem unbelievably naive, Reiner tips the scales toward the cynical view. This audio production will provide much thought, as well as laughter. J.A.S. © AudioFile 2002, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

At first glance, I thought I was being entertained by another one Twain's latest satires. Instead, I felt like I was engaged in a modern lecture between a seasoned philosophy professor and his most accomplished student.Through the dialogue, you get a sense that this piece of writing is the epitome of Samuel Clemen's look on life, although debatable. Regardless of how you feel at the end of the essay, if read carefully, you will at least question your own daily motives and perhaps everyone else's that has come before you. I have been trained to thoroughly enjoy this read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A highly unusual unexpected idea about people By Israel Drazin Mark Twain is widely known as a humorist, but there is one very serious book that he wrote, “What is Man?” He held off publishing the book for many years and constantly made changes in it because he felt, correctly, that people would reject his ideas, and he later only released the book in a limited edition of two hundred and fifty copies. When he died in 1910, the New York Tribune wrote an article that focused on the incongruity that the greatest American humorist had such dark seemingly irreligious opinions. The book contains Mark Twain’s strange concept of life and his view of the inability of people to think and make decisions, a concept we would never had expected from this wise, open-eyed man. He felt that people lack free will and that they act like machines, like animals do.Twain contended that people do not have free will, cannot control their thoughts, and are not born with a sense of right and wrong. People learn what they learn from outside, and are compelled by their nature to do what they have absorbed no matter what its source, like a machine: “From his cradle to his grave a man never does a single thing which has any FIRST AND FOREMOST object but one – to secure peace of mind, spiritual comfort, for HIMSELF…. He will always do the thing which will bring him the most mental comfort” only those things he was taught (highlights and italics in Twain’s text).People, according to Twain, are incapable of developing their own ideas. Their feelings about morality are ideas that they are taught and trained. No one ever utters a thought of his own, but “The utterer of a thought always utters a second-hand one…. It is in his human environment which influences his mind and his feelings, furnishes him his ideals, and sets him on his road and keeps him on it.” Put differently: “man is never anything but what his outside influences have made him. They train him downwards or they train him upwards – but they train him; they are at work upon him all the time,” outside influences mold people and once absorbed make him do what he has been trained to do (italics in original).Twain adds that beside training, a person’s behavior is influenced by his temperament. Temperament is always present – one has either a hot or cold temperament.According to Twain, man has no dignities, grandeurs, or sublimities. He is no better than a rat. He is a machine. He acts on habit and instinct, like a cow who heads toward food. He “walks in his sleep, so to speak…. With memory to help, man preserves his observations and reasonings, reflects upon them, adds to them, re-combines them, and so proceeds, stage by stage” but this is exactly what an ant does.Even a man who rushes into a fire to save a woman does not do so because of free will because people do not have free will. His “temperament, his training, and the daily influences which had molded him made him what he was, compelled him to rescue the old woman and thus save himself – save himself from spiritual pain, from unendurable wretchedness…. He did not make the choice; it was made for him by forces which he could not control” (italics in original).Put in other words for Twain repeats his idea many times: “Man is a machine, made up of many mechanisms; the moral and mental ones acting automatically in accordance with the impulses of an interior Master who is built out of born-temperament and the accumulation of multitudinous outside influences and trainings; a machine whose one function is to secure the spiritual contentment of the Master, be his desires good or be they evil; a machine whose Will is absolute and must be obeyed, and always is obeyed” (italics and capitalizations in the original). While Twain did not develop his philosophy from the Bible, people who read the Bible literally and who are convinced that God is involved in everything that happens on earth, and who accept as true the Bible’s statement in Exodus that God hardened Pharaoh’s heart so that he could not change his mind and did the same thing in Samuel to the two sons of the priest Eli, would also believe that people are controlled like puppets.

Rather than repeat what others have said, let me just add that his ideas of external influences in life are very well made. It gives readers the the knowledge that what they say to and do for others can become an influence that can change others' lives in ways they couldn't have imagined possible.

Beneficial lessons for anyone stressed out, anxious or needing courage By Eva I think often people aren't even aware of how negative emotions, stressful situations, fears or difficult relationships can impact the quality of their daily lives.Whether it's the long checkout line in the grocery store, heavy traffic, aggravating relatives, annoying coworkers, everyday life can generate unpleasant emotions that can have detrimental consequences to our emotional as well as our physical health.I found Dr. Orloff's Emotional Freedom Practices CD set to be very helpful in identifying common causes of things that make me feel stressed out, angry or frustrated and taught me some practical and easy-to-use techniques to deal with them.I think these CDs would be beneficial to someone who deals with any level of anxiety, fear, stress, anger, frustration or jealousy or knows someone who has trouble with these issues and wants to better understand them and help them work through these emotions in a positive way, by developing new coping techniques. The strategies you learn are quick and easy to start using in your day-to-day life. After listening to the sessions on the 2 discs, I felt calmer as well as more prepared to handle stress. I also tried a couple of the things suggested the day after I listened to the CD and yes, they do work. Some times little changes can make a big difference in your outlook.Whether you are using these CDs along with reading the book "Emotional Freedom" or on their own, I really feel that the valuable lessons you learn will help you get a better understanding of negative emotions and how to deal with them so you can be a more positive, confident and relaxed person who can take the stresses of everyday life in stride.

A Good Message By Lisa Shea The first caveat to say about any audio material is that you're going to have a personal reaction - good or bad - to the voice used. They've done numerous studies with GPSs and they find that a GPS whose vocal patterns tend to match the listener is most appreciated. That is, if you're a New Yorker, you tend to like a GPS that talks like a New Yorker. It's the way humans are. So I'm sure there are some people who will adore this author's voice and find it perfect for their needs. I found it to be sharp, dry, and detached. When someone is coaching me in the sensitive area of my emotions, I want them to sound warm and caring. So that's my preference and it's reasonable that others will have other reactions.I listened through the CD set a few times to give it a fair time and I do have to say that as you become more familiar with her, almost "getting to know her", that the voice can grow on you.Dr. Orloff steps you through how to deal with your emotions of fear, anger, disappointment, and other negative issues into supportive emotions. She both talks about how the negative emotions tend to occur and to provide ideas about ways to cope with them. One of her examples that stuck with me involved patience and lines. Let's say you tend to get agitated and angry when waiting in lines. Try instead to think of them as meditative learning times - and even deliberately allow someone to step in front of you sometime. See how happy they are! Over a little line-skip! Of course I chuckle when I hear this one each time because my mental image involves people *behind* me in line. I bet they won't be quite so pleased that I'm letting someone with a big cart of groceries come before everyone else. I think she probably meant that I had to be the last person in my line before I did this kind-hearted act.Dr. Orloff's point is that our emotions are simply what we have trained ourselves over a period of time to feel in a situation. A line is neutral - it's neither good or bad! We can be peaceful and happy in the line, or we can be stressed. Why be stressed when we can be happy! Is it somehow 'better' to be stressed, or more beneficial to our health? Hardly! You could say "well yes but sometimes other people are doing things to cause you stress." To this I would rebut with the famous Eleanor Roosevelt quote, "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent." That is, sure other people will do all sorts of annoying and idiotic and troublesome things. That's what they do. You can't change them. What you *can* change is how you conduct your own world within your own brain. You have complete influence over your own emotions and reactions and thoughts.Relatives can be troublesome. Of course they can! Look at all the movies and books and plays involving troublesome relatives. For any story you have, literature has situations that are far worse. These things happen and are normal. You can't wish yourself into an imaginary ideal family with no conflict at all. However you can change your own view of the situation and how you choose to react to the drama. You can learn to be at peace with yourself and your choices, whatever the random roller-coasters of the world around you might do.Are there down sides here, beside the voice? Well, I have to say that I had a few people listen to parts with me and the voice did put them off. So be aware that that might be a hurdle that you personally don't feel like overcoming. Also, some people might find the information simplistic. "Sure, I should be less angry at my really annoying brother who drives me absolutely insane. But HOW do I do that??" The CD gives you a few tools but not a great number, and it doesn't delve into them in great detail. It might have been far better to make a single CD all about family problems for example. Talk about a variety of family problems, about the different types of dynamics, and then provide a number of ideas for addressing each one. That way a person who has a problem comes away with a real hope for finding success. That is, I think most people who pick up this CD don't need long descriptions of why it's not good to get stressed when family members do insane things. I think most listeners *know* they don't want to get stressed and wish there was a way not to get stressed. The CD tries to cover too much ground with the background and the why-you-should-change (which we don't really need) and not enough on the "here is what to do" (which we desperately want).Still, there is good material here, and it can be enough to get someone on the right path and taking those first steps.Recommended.

Not the deepest, but useful By Amazon Customer I enjoyed listening to these CDs because they offered a positive way to think about disturbing emotions. I found her delivery friendly, open, and self-revealing.There are little quizzes she asks you to take before delving into a particular feeling, to assess how deeply it's ruling your life. Unlike many questionnaires of this type, hers are not pathologizing, just elucidating. They may not be comprehensive, but they definitely give you an idea of how much your life is affected by a particular emotion.I agree with another reviewer that the techniques are not necessarily new, or fleshed out as much as one might wish; however, it is soothing and helpful to listen to her; and, I believe you will benefit.Frankly, if you come away from the experience with a bit more compassion for yourself it will have been worth the price. Hearing a kind voice say reassuring things can be healing in its own way. As you listen to Dr.Orloff talking lovingly about some very serious emotional states, it provides you with a template of how to talk to yourself with patience and kindness. If you only did that one thing, your life would improve radically.
