Many of my co-workers described it as their "bible" for educators. It was also the best study guide for the CNE of all my reference books and it was referenced in the rationales on the NLN practice test.

Excellent Artistic Escape By S.Rabon This coloring book for adults exceeded my expectations and continue to as I selfishly make my way through coloring each of the pages. Well, with the exception of one page. That page, I shared with a lady that seemed nervous and anxious. I told her how exciting and intricate the details of the coloring book just took my mind away to Shakey in Wonderland instead. I use an array of mediums and cannot wait to share some with the talented creator of this mastermind. I have let many people and a couple of organizations view the book perhaps for their own peace of mind and/or their clients. Perfect gift along with some not too cheap colored pencils and paint pens.Congratulations on your wonderful 1st Coloring Book for Adults publication!

Then Buy it By Natasha Callison As someone who has worked through numerous other Swift courses I can honestly say that this is the best starting point if you want to jump right into Swift game programming but have very little or no experience with programming. It is densely packed with detail to explain WHY you are doing what you are doing and WHY the language is set up the way it is. Even knowing what I know it is refreshing to go through and fill in the gaps. I would still recommend an intro to programming course to understand the overarching concepts behind general programming, for that I recommend Simon Allardice from Lynda.com and his Foundation series.

I'm afraid that this book gave me the impression that some code will not work in the next few chapters. I like the cover of this book, but the content is not consistent with the cover of the book. Don't judge a book by it's color.

Now a New York Times Bestseller! Here is a book to lead you through the fascinating intersections of life and physics with humor and intelligence.Find out how the laws of physics define every aspect of our lives and society, from human nature and relationships to geopolitical issues like financial markets, globalization and immigration. The Quantum Rules is a different kind of physics book, as easy to read as a novel and directly relevant for everyday life issues that affect us all. It is not meant to dazzle you with unproven speculations that have no bearing on your life. Rather, The Quantum Rules will familiarize you with the important and established laws at the heart of physics, in a way never done before – by showing how the defining patterns of our lives, our behavior and our society already follow similar rules.Never took an interest in science before? No problem! you will still understand everything and find plenty to relate to. A scientist or a science junkie? You will find a different perspective on things you may already know. Best of all, you will discover how to have meaningful conversations about physics in a way that won’t make eyes glaze over, and in which all can gladly participate. The Quantum Rules also does something you would never expect from a book on physics – it makes you laugh, often. Its new and original take on established natural laws injects plenty of dry humor into this serious subject, by using life to explain physics and in turn using physics to understand life.

The Quantum Rules: How the Laws of Physics Explain Love, Success, and Everyday Life, by Kunal K. Das

Hard Science in an Easy and Fun Read By Amazon Customer Based on the title, I started this book expecting to find something akin to The Secret or What the Bleep Do We Know!?(TM): Discovering the Endless Possibilities for Altering Your Everyday Reality, which would have been fine, as those were quite entertaining and interesting. However despite the way the cover reads, this book is not really a philosophy, referencing or passing as scientific fact. Rather, it is scientific fact, explained using examples; sometimes quite insightful and blunt to the point of being funny; from everyday life. The author reflects upon the fractal nature of the universe, and does a great job of tying together everything from sociology and relationships to the global economy. However, when he talks science, he does not deviate from proven laws and theories. Some of the "weird" science he discusses may sound like science fiction to those readers who are less accustomed with works such as The Universe in a Nutshell, A Brief History of Time, Hyperspace: A Scientific Odyssey through Parallel Universes, Time Warps, and the Tenth Dimension, The Fourth Dimension: A Guided Tour of the Higher Universes; or series such as Stephen Hawking's Universe or Cosmos: Carl Sagan. If you love reading Discover Magazine, love Science, and want to be able to explain it to your friends in new and interesting ways, this book is a must read. There's even a chapter on Schrodinger's Cat (Google celebrated the life of Erwin Schrodinger today with their Doodle). My favorite quote, "In fact, quantum mechanics is the most successful understanding of the physical universe mankind has ever come up with; so successful in fact, that everything quantum mechanics has ever predicted has been verified to be true, even when those predictions totally defy common sense." This is why we built the collider at CERN. We built the most complicated and expensive machine ever constructed to try to prove ourselves wrong, but we've yet to do so...

Highly Recommended to Understand Life By Scott Haraburda For those lost souls looking for the meaning of life, physics Professor Kundal Das uses the fundamental laws of the universe to explain a wealth of useful insights to be gained about our lives. Expecting complex derivations of quantum mechanics using Fourier Transformations of complicated multi-dimensional non-linear partial differential equations, I didn't find that in this book. Instead, The Quantum Guide to Life: How the Laws of Physics Explain Our Lives from Laziness to Love provided me this insight without requiring a doctorate degree in physics. Thus, anyone without a background or even an interest in science will appreciate the author's essential ideas.Although the laws of physics were not meant to derive the meaning of everyday life (financial, personal, relational, and social), these laws were used to express it. Physics involves the study of nature, and the interactions of objects within the universe. Using this as its underlying basis, the author provides the reader with wisdom based upon unchanging laws with an objective and infallible perspective. Dr. Das has the technical background to provide us this wisdom. As a physics professor at the Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, he has authored dozens of referred journal publications and has contributed much to the world's current knowledge in quantum transport of nanoscale circuits and atomic waveguides. In his book, Dr. Das discusses the pursuit of happiness, the purpose of uncertainties, the real cause of why a house is messy, why people are lazy, why people connect with other people and not others, the need for social interactions and the need for fame. He even applied Newton's three laws to human dynamics: motivation is required for change; it becomes harder to change as we grow older; and, everything we do has an impact upon our lives. Dr. Das ends his book with a formula for success using the concept of current in an electrical field. Something we should already know is that success comes from a combination of disciplined hard work, persistence, and an aggressive pursuit of goals.Of personal interest to me is the book's tie to quantum mechanics. I learned more about this fascinating topic during my graduate studies using statistical mechanics, which applies probability theory to quantum mechanics. While learning about this topic, I couldn't fully comprehend how this applied to understanding nature. But after solving several hundred statistical mechanics problems and using this for my doctoral research in transport phenomena of high temperature gases in a rocket thruster, I was finally able to grasp its complex, yet simple, concepts. What confused me even more was that someone was creative enough to develop this concept. And, that person was Austrian physicist Ludwig Boltzmann. His innovative thinking was so unique for his time in the late 19th Century that almost all scientists disbelieved his theory. Because prominent researchers of his time criticized his work, Boltzmann continually defended himself. Today, almost all scientists believe his theory. Dr. Das does something similar by developing a fundamental understanding of life using these universal laws.In my opinion, which I believe Dr. Das shares, physics is a human enterprise and a physicist's human attributes make great difference to how his work is treated by his peers. Dr. Das does a good job linking physics and philosophy together in his easy-to-understand book. The Quantum Guide to Life is an interesting book about the philosophy of life. Highly recommended for those who want to understand life.

By bucarotechelp I would estimate this book to be 90 percent about physics and 10 percent related to the connection between physics and our lives. It's written in an easy to understand conversational style. There are more than 70 illustrations. I love books that explain complex subjects in a simple understandable style. If you want to learn about how the laws of physics explain our lives, you'll get some of that, but I expected more. If you want to learn about basic quantum physics and sub-atomic particles, this is an amazing book.

I tried to find some examples of what I would find in the book. I even asked the author if there were any other examples. I was only directed to the two images that appear on the front and back cover. Some of the images appear to be crudely drawn, don't fill the entire page and have a lot of shadows. This book just seems like it was quickly put together without much thought. I guess I expected more. There is a lot of filler in this book. A lot of QR codes to purchase other books. This particular book doesn't start until page 9 and the last coloring page is 109. An upside is the actual coloring pages are single sided so you can use whichever media you wish without fear of bleed through onto the next page. Pages 111 - 122 is filler and QR codes to buy other books. I've included a few photos so you can decide for yourself. Everyone is drawn to different things, so many this book is for you. And maybe this review will save you some money. Who knows.

Yes the lil fairy doors are cute but theyre half shaded in and the pictures don't fill up the page. I was not impressed with the book and even tried to give it away but it was politely declined...I would love to send it back to Amazon but threw the paperwork away.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR, BOOKPAGE, AND SHELF AWARENESS • “Paula McLain is considered the new star of historical fiction, and for good reason. Fans of The Paris Wife will be captivated by Circling the Sun, which . . . is both beautifully written and utterly engrossing.”—Ann Patchett, Country LivingPaula McLain, author of the phenomenal bestseller The Paris Wife, now returns with her keenly anticipated new novel, transporting readers to colonial Kenya in the 1920s. Circling the Sun brings to life a fearless and captivating woman—Beryl Markham, a record-setting aviator caught up in a passionate love triangle with safari hunter Denys Finch Hatton and Karen Blixen, who as Isak Dinesen wrote the classic memoir Out of Africa.Brought to Kenya from England as a child and then abandoned by her mother, Beryl is raised by both her father and the native Kipsigis tribe who share his estate. Her unconventional upbringing transforms Beryl into a bold young woman with a fierce love of all things wild and an inherent understanding of nature’s delicate balance. But even the wild child must grow up, and when everything Beryl knows and trusts dissolves, she is catapulted into a string of disastrous relationships.Beryl forges her own path as a horse trainer, and her uncommon style attracts the eye of the Happy Valley set, a decadent, bohemian community of European expats who also live and love by their own set of rules. But it’s the ruggedly charismatic Denys Finch Hatton who ultimately helps Beryl navigate the uncharted territory of her own heart. The intensity of their love reveals Beryl’s truest self and her fate: to fly.Set against the majestic landscape of early-twentieth-century Africa, McLain’s powerful tale reveals the extraordinary adventures of a woman before her time, the exhilaration of freedom and its cost, and the tenacity of the human spirit.Praise for Circling the Sun“In McLain’s confident hands, Beryl Markham crackles to life, and we readers truly understand what made a woman so far ahead of her time believe she had the power to soar.”—Jodi Picoult, author of Leaving Time“Enchanting . . . a worthy heir to [Isak] Dinesen . . . Like Africa as it’s so gorgeously depicted here, this novel will never let you go.”—The Boston Globe“Famed aviator Beryl Markham is a novelist’s dream. . . . [A] wonderful portrait of a complex woman who lived—defiantly—on her own terms.”—People (Book of the Week)“Circling the Sun soars.”—Newsday“Captivating . . . [an] irresistible novel.”—The Seattle Times“Like its high-flying subject, Circling the Sun is audacious and glamorous and hard not to be drawn in by. Beryl Markham may have married more than once, but she was nobody’s wife.”—Entertainment Weekly“[An] eloquent evocation of Beryl’s daring life.”—O: The Oprah Magazine“Markham’s life is the stuff of legend. . . . McLain has created a voice that is lush and intricate to evoke a character who is enviably brave and independent.”—NPR“Bold, absorbing fiction.”—New York Daily News“Paula McLain has such a gift for bringing characters to life. I loved discovering the singular Beryl Markham, with all her strengths and passions and complexities.”—Jojo Moyes, author of Me Before You

Circling the Sun: A Novel, by Paula McLain

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of July 2015: Sometimes a reader craves a good, old-fashioned yarn. This much anticipated novel from the author of The Paris Wife is exactly that: an engrossing story of love and adventure in colonial Africa, complete with gorgeous landscape, dissolute British ex-pats, and lots of derring-do with horses, motorcars and airplanes. That it is also the best kind of contemporary historical novel – the kind that teaches you something about the real people and events of the time – is a bonus. At the center of the novel is Beryl Markham (born – you gotta love it – Clutterbuck), the headstrong daughter of a British colonial who grew up more comfortable among the people and animals of her adopted Kenya than in the homes of its landed gentry. When Beryl’s mother leaves the family and her father gives up the farm, she marries (at 16) a gentleman farmer, a drunk too louche to be much of a husband. Like privileged but love-hungry teenage girls past and future, Beryl seeks companionship from her horses, becoming the first and greatest female horse trainer in the region. Along the way, she hobnobs with Kenyan high society, including, but not limited to, Karen Blixen (who authored her own epic story, Out of Africa, under the pen name Isaak Dinesen) and her lover Denys Finch Hatten (who will always be Robert Redford to those of us who watched him play the role in the movie version of Dinesen’s book.) Much bed-hopping and relationship-boundary-pushing ensue, with all the teeth-gnashing and yearning that goes along with it, no matter the era. Those who knew about Markham before reading this book may be surprised by how little there is about her as a pilot. She is, after all, the first woman to fly across the Atlantic from east to west, and she wrote her own memoir, 1942’s West with the Night; here, it is only in the book’s frame – a prologue and its final chapter – that we get a glimpse of the way that Beryl will, literally, soar. But McLain doesn’t seem interested in portraying her as a trailblazing feminist with an idea about changing the world; the Beryl Markham here is noteworthy precisely because she is NOT those things so much as a girl who grew up pushing back against conventions that got in her way. “But you’ve never been afraid of anything, have you?” Finch Hatten says to her in their last meeting. “I have, though,” she replies. “I’ve been terrified. . .I just haven’t let that stop me.” -- Sara Nelson

Review

“Paula McLain is considered the new star of historical fiction, and for good reason. Fans of The Paris Wife will be captivated by Circling the Sun, which . . . is both beautifully written and utterly engrossing.”—Ann Patchett, Country Living   “Paula McLain cements herself as the writer of historical fictional memoir with Circling the Sun, giving vivid voice to Beryl Markham, a singular, extraordinary woman. In McLain’s confident hands, Markham crackles to life, and we readers truly understand what made a woman so far ahead of her time believe she had the power to soar.”—Jodi Picoult, author of Leaving Time  “Enchanting . . . A worthy heir to [Isak] Dinesen, McLain will keep you from eating, sleeping, or checking your e-mail—though you might put these pages down just long enough to order airplane tickets to Nairobi. . . . What’s certain is that the reluctantly earthbound armchair reader will cherish this gift for the hidden adventurer in all of us. Like Africa as it’s so gorgeously depicted here, this novel will never let you go.”—The Boston Globe   “Famed aviator Beryl Markham is a novelist’s dream. . . . [A] wonderful portrait of a complex woman who lived—defiantly—on her own terms.”—People (Book of the Week)“Circling the Sun soars.”—Newsday“Captivating . . . Beryl Markham may have married more than once, but she was nobody’s wife.”—Entertainment Weekly   “[An] eloquent evocation of Beryl’s daring life.”—O: The Oprah Magazine“Richly textured . . . Markham’s life is the stuff of legend. . . . McLain has created a voice that is lush and intricate to evoke a character who is enviably brave and independent.”—NPR   “Bold, absorbing fiction.”—New York Daily News“Paula McLain has such a gift for bringing characters to life. I loved discovering the singular Beryl Markham, with all her strengths and passions and complexities, a woman who persistently broke the rules, despite the personal cost. She’s a rebel in her own time, and a heroine for ours.”—Jojo Moyes, author of Me Before You“By the last pages, readers will hate to say goodbye to such an irresistible narrator.”—Miami Herald “Paula McLain brings Beryl to glorious life, portraying a woman with a great many flaws that seem to result from her zest for life and inability to follow the roles expected of women in the 1920s and ’30s.”—St. Louis Post-Dispatch   “Amelia Earhart gets all the airtime, but this pilot had the juicier past. . . . McLain crafts a story readers won’t soon forget.”—Good Housekeeping  “With a sharp eye for detail and style to spare, Paula McLain captures the nuances of complex relationships, the rigidity of social conventions, and the wide skies and breathtaking vistas of Africa.”—Christina Baker Kline, author of Orphan Train “Set in 1920s Kenya, this fictionalized history of the beautiful, high-flying aviator Beryl Markham is as luminous as its headstrong heroine. An exhilarating ride.”—Family Circle“Paula McLain is yet another twenty-first-century woman who can write rings around the hyper-masculine men who dominate so much of American fiction.”—Liz Smith “McLain’s skill at blending fact and fiction, which dazzled readers in The Paris Wife, is on full display. . . . Circling the Sun is a masterful story of hardship, courage and love.”—Shelf Awareness

174 of 185 people found the following review helpful. Beryl Markham, horse trainer/pilot, and rival for Out of Africa's Denys Finch Hatton By Tracy Marks How do you evaluate a novel which is well-written, which convincingly portrays a remarkable real life heroine and her milieu, with believable dialogue, yet at the same time presents that heroine as unlikeable, and callous in personal relationships? And what if the other characters in the novel are one-dimensional? Such is my dilemma reviewing CIRCLING THE SUN. For the above reasons, my reaction to Paula McLain's latest novel is mixed.A few years earlier, I had read THE PARIS WIFE and believed McLain to be a talented writer. The subject of CIRCLING THE SUN overlapped the story told in Out of Africa, one of my favorite movies. I also was captivated by the beauty of CIRCLING THE SUN's book jacket – a 1920s woman on a rich, warm, golden background. So I decided to read the novel, and open myself to Beryl Markham's perspective.Admittedly, I was ambivalent from the start, because Beryl Markham was a rival to Karen Blixen in regard to Karen's love affair with Denys Finch Hatton. Karen Blixen, under the pseudonym Isak Dinesen, had described her life in Africa in her book OUT OF AFRICA, but in the book, the focus was more on Africa itself, rather than her affair with Denys. Likewise, Beryl Markham focused more on her accomplishments as a horse trainer and pilot in her own book, WEST WITH THE NIGHT, rather than her love for Denys.CIRCLING THE SUN, however, emphasizes personal relationships rather than accomplishments, although it does cover Beryl's development as a horse trainer. Although Beryl became famous as the first woman to fly east to west across the Atlantic, her experience as a pilot receives only cursory attention in the novel.McLain portrays Beryl, who was abandoned at age four by her mother, as a headstrong tomboy growing up in the wilds of Kenya, and eventually becoming the first licensed horse trainer there. Although from a fairly wealthy British expatriate family, her best friend as a child was a native boy of the Kisii tribe, whose company she preferred to other white families. She was never interested in preparing herself for a traditionally domestic female life.Beryl went after what she wanted, even when doing so meant hurting or betraying friends. As a young woman in post WWI British East Africa, she became a subject of scandal several times because of the carelessness with which she flaunted the norms of society – particularly in regard to her extramarital affairs. Yet this same lack of concern for what people thought of her enabled her to develop her mastery with horses and receive renown as a horse trainer and racer – a very unusual occupation for a woman of that time.CIRCLING THE SUN is likely to appeal most to readers who have seen OUT OF AFRICA and remember the Karen Blixen/Denys Finch Hatton relationship as portrayed by Meryl Streep and Robert Redford. A turning point in the film was Karen's jealousy of Denys' friendship with a young woman he promised to take flying. That was Beryl Markham, although the film fictionalized the situation. Likewise, CIRCLING THE SUN emphasizes the love triangle - although the relationship between Beryl and Denys is not particularly romantic and the circumstances of his illicit affair are not likely to win Beryl the adulation of women readers. More admirable is Beryl's achievements as horse trainer and pilot. But whether or not you warm to the main character, you are likely to appreciate McLain's skills at writing dialogue, and at presenting the British expatriate community in Kenya during the first few decades of the 1920s .Occasionally, McLain's Beryl even makes statements that led me to pause and reflect. "I've sometimes thought that being loved a little less than others can actually make a person rather than ruin them," Beryl says at one point. At another time, McLain writes in Beryl's voice, "'This is why there is poetry,' I said, so softly. I wasn't sure he could hear me. 'For days like these.' "Although McLain is more concerned with personal relationships than describing the environment, she does at times write lyrical descriptions and narrations: "The sun was an anvil on the top of my head, shoulders and neck, where fresh sweat poured and wetted my color. My clothes hung on me, the wet salt form my body drying in rings. I was breathing hard.....But we had our distance to cover. What was tiredness?"McLain's imagery is sometimes vivid and meaningful. Here, with an apt analogy, she captures for us the importance of personal freedom to both Beryl and Denys, neither of whom are willing to be confined: "Denys read on, his voice rising and falling, while a leopard moth that had got caught in the curtains stopped struggling for a moment, and realised it was free."Do I recommend CAPTURING THE SUN? Yes, I do, although you may, like me, have a mixed reaction to Beryl Markham and find most of the peripheral characters in the novel to be one-dimensional. But I read the book in less than 24 hours and didn't want to put it down. It will most likely hold your attention too, and deserves at least four stars for that.

By pebbles (no spoilers) This first thing to remember about this book is that it is classified by its author as "historical fiction." I tried to keep this in mind while reading, but found it hard and distracting to try to figure out what was factual and what was not. Maybe not a great way to read this. I'm a big fan of Isak Dinesen's (Karen Blixen) writing and her story. I have read several books by her about her life and also Denys's. So I was naturally intrigued by this book since part of Beryl's life was intertwined with theirs. Beryl and Karen shared many personality traits and life experiences, with some glaring differences. In the movie portrayal of Karen's book, Out of Africa, Beryl makes a vague appearance in the character Felicity. Beryl Markham, was of course, a real, fascinating person and many of the events described in the book are true, just where that line gets blurred is hard to tell. Putting that aside, which I had to, I sincerely loved this book. It took a couple short reading sessions for it to get its hooks in me, but once it did, I stayed up all night to finish it.I am in awe of both of these women for they were true pioneers in many ways. Although Beryl didn't have a choice of where she grew up, it's clear she wouldn't have chosen any place else. This novel focuses more on her personal life and less on her public persona. It begins with her as a young child and follows her to early adulthood. "Growing up wild" as she did, she didn't see boundaries where so many people, especially women, saw in early 1900's. She only saw challenges to be overcome with hard work and determination. I admire her spirit and her courage. Her love life was confused and often painful. She made it through difficult times by focusing on the other things she loved, horses, and eventually flying. As a horse lover myself, I particularly enjoyed the author's descriptions of the horse and the races. Thrilling is the word that comes to mind.I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the time period, horses, or Kenya. It is also a romance, but that takes a backseat to the rest of her early life. It is very well written and flows nicely. I know I will read it again, perhaps in conjunction with re-reading Isak Dinensen's books. I will also seek out other books by this author. I loved her writing style.

"Circling the Sun" is an exquisite foray into historical fiction, engrossing the reader from the first sentence. Between the covers is the life story of Beryl Markham, a woman of remarkable and numerous accomplishments in the early 20th Century, which include being a female landowner (rare) and horse trainer of champion racers in Kenya (also unique), and author. She later becomes the first woman to fly cross the Atlantic from east to west, (Great Britain to N. America). This is certain to be a book that makes the New York Times Bestseller List for 2015 and undoubtedly, a feature movie in the future.Initially, the story starts at Beryl's abandonment by her mother and elder brother to return their native England, leaving Beryl in the hands of her father, who starting with little manages to gain notoriety within white society of Kenya. Beryl learns from a tender age, the theory and practical aspects of breeding and training racehorses and goes on to become famous in her own right. The story of how she starts with little to achieve great respect and admiration is a very involved tale. Soon she becomes friends with Karen Blixsen, a coffee plantation owner nearby and eventually Karen's lover, Denys Finch Hatton. Their complicated triangle of friendship and love has far reaching implications, particularly for Beryl. I promise I have not spoiled the story, that is why it is essential that you read it!McLain provides a thoroughly insightful look into the colony life and its struggles and secrets which are many. She writes a smooth story in linear fashion that is strong and powerfully gripping. If you like horses, this will be a close second to "Secretariat" as a favorite. Even if horses aren't particularly your bag, this story has such intriguing characters that your fascination with their behaviors will rush you to the finish line. All though their are many characters within the story, the primary characters are all richly developed; additionally, McLain manages to make them so dynamic that you won't become confused. This book is a keeper, not only do I recommend that you read it, it is something you will want to buy so that you will have it to read again!

Regular folks disguised as imperfect heroes or devilish antagonists. Non-preachy books I have shared with most everyone I know. No need to filter out anybody with "special" beliefs so as to not offend. Just pleasantly simple stories.

Really enjoyed this series and the characters. Along the way there were numerous passages that made me stop and think about for awhile. My only complaint is that there needs to be some proofreading. Some sentences seemed to be incomplete by at least a word. Also, there is a difference between "bolder" and "boulder". There were not a lot of these. I kept reading. Biggest one: Pittsburgh was misspelled.Need more Elmo books.

Best Ebook PDF Point of No Return: A Novel, by John P. Marquand

Considered by many critics to be John P. Marquand’s finest novel, Point of No Return is the story of a modern businessman borne back by fate into yesteryear Raised in the small town of Clyde, Massachusetts, Charles Gray has worked long and hard to become a vice president at the privately owned Stuyvesant Bank in Manhattan. But at the most crucial moment of his career, when his focus should be on reading his boss’s intentions and competing with his chief rival for the promotion, Charles finds himself hopelessly distracted by the past.   Years ago, the Gray family was featured in Yankee Persepolis, a sociological study of Clyde. Charles, his sister, and their parents were classified as members of the “lower-upper class,” the unspoken strains of their tenuous social status cast in stark black and white. A chance encounter with the author of the study floods Charles’s thoughts with memories, and when a business matter compels him to make a trip to Clyde, it seems as if the Fates are conspiring to turn back the clock. As he reflects on the defining moments of his youth, Charles contends with one of the central mysteries of existence: how our lives can feel both predetermined and random at the same time.   Published in 1949, Point of No Return is a brilliant study of character and place heralded by the New York Times as “further proof that its author is one of the most important living American novelists.”

One reason could be that people do not read like they once did and this is why serious fiction concerns itself with either life in the university (hardly the stomping ground for everyman figures) and alternately freaks and geeks. Since the death of John Cheever, there have been few books that address the trials and tribulations of the middle and upper middle class reader. One does not find sensational crimes or magic realism in works by John Marquand. While there certainly is a place for these sorts of things, it is a pity that Marquand's influence waned with his death in the 1960s.This book concerns themes that probably are more universal than what one finds in contemporary literature. A man is seeking to get a promotion in his firm and he is in competition with another person for it. During the novel we really get "the story of his life, using the "flashback technique" that Marquand made famous in all of his best books. Along the way there is regret and a curiosity about what he might lost by not pursuing a different path. Not exactly earth shattering events, but things that grownups experience everyday. One wonders if the reason that people do not read as they once did is due to television and other assorted distraction or for the simple reason that the books that are published are so very far removed from common experiences.Marquand's fall since the 1960s has been a sad one. He was at one time, one the best-selling authors in the US. It is a tragedy that more of his works are not in print, this one in particular. If ever an author desereved "The Library of America" treatment it is he.

It sat on a shelf in my father's library and sounded like an interesting title. It is now an old friend.I've reread this subtle novel many times over the years and find, remarkably, that with each reading I get a different sense of Marquand's ultimate message. In fact, the whole story seems to take on new meaning over time, a delightful characteristic of every great book.Marquand is a wonderful author. I am currently savoring his "So Little Time" and recommend all of his work. "Point of No Return," however, will always be my favorite.

35 of 37 people found the following review helpful. A minority report on a flawed novel By David A. Kemp This novel has been called the shrewdest portrait of American life since Sinclair Lewis's Main Street (1920). That may be an overly ambitious claim, but the book has its points (it has also been called a painstakingly accurate social study of a New England town), and many will find it "a good old-fashioned read," a genteel, mildly absorbing family saga covering two generations. My main complaint is that it is simply too long: 559 pages, when it should have been about two-thirds that length. It is old-fashioned all right, in the sense that its pace is decidedly slow and deliberate; those who like their fiction fast-paced and dramatic need to look elsewhere. There is a sense here of all the time in the world, and the modest events of the story unfold in quite a leisurely fashion, with lengthy passages of description, exposition, explanation, reflection, retrospection. Marquand feels obliged to spell out much that a more modern writer would suggest, imply, leave his reader to infer, or simply omit. I sometimes felt I would never get to the end of it. Occasionally the book has an elegiac quality. The protagonist, earnest, conscientious, buttoned-down, and rather dull Charley Gray, is an upper middle-class banker in his forties, back from the war, resuming his place in an old, small, traditional New York City bank in 1947, living in what would now be called a yuppie suburban development with his wife and two children, and worrying about promotion in the bank. A large part of the novel, however, is devoted to his youth, family life, and first romance in the old, small, traditional New England town (Clyde, Mass.) where he grew up and where his family has its roots. Hence some of the novel has a postwar setting of 1947 New York City and suburbia, but most of it has a prewar setting and is a portrait of New England small-town life from World War I through the 1920s.Perhaps the most memorable character is Charley's father, a charming, irresponsible ne'er-do-well of good family and no accomplishment, who promises much and delivers little, and who loses any money he gets his hands on by his compulsive speculation in the stockmarket. Charley is determined not to be like his father. The business about the visiting, snooping academic anthropologist/sociologist who writes a study of Clyde and has a passion for categorizing and pigeonholing everything and everyone is heavy-handed and becomes tiresome, strained, and intrusive. (There is an odd slip in which Marquand has the misapprehension that a Duesenberg is "a foreign car"--a strange mistake for an American social historian of the 1920s and 1930s.)John P. Marquand (1893-1960) enjoyed that rare thing, both popular and critical success, for the last two decades of his life. He was widely read and admired as a distinguished American novelist. He has few readers today. This book has usually been regarded as one of his better efforts. He was a facile writer whose prose here is smooth and readable enough, but lacks crispness, incisiveness, pungency, wit. In the end, the whole performance is pleasant and agreeable but hardly gripping or searching or profound; it is, instead, prolix, rather bland, a little tired, and somewhat dated. And the big decisive scene, the moment of truth toward which the entire novel seems to be building is, when it finally arrives, "a strangely hollow climax," to use Marquand's words (and an all-too-predictable one as well). If you want to read Marquand at his best, before he began to take himself too seriously as a social historian, try The Late George Apley (Pulitzer Prize, 1938), Wickford Point (1939), and perhaps H. M. Pulham, Esquire (1941). I believe all three are livelier and more engaging than this book. (The last of these has a protagonist who has much in common with Charley Gray and who has his own "point of no return" story to tell; indeed, H. M. Pulham, Esquire shares its major themes with Point of No Return.)

This marks six months - half a year! - of me publicly writing about my evidently slow process of dying. Though, from the start, there was no idea just how long it would take for me to actually die. We've still a bit of time before we can get a real idea of the timing. But, in the meantime, pull up a comfy chair, break out the remains of the Halloween candy and join the party.

The writing is so good that I drop everything and read her next installment as soon as I know it's in. Her October installment was no exception. Waiting on November!

Very informative read for professionals to learn from By Relatively Rebecca Human Relations Protocol is a very informative book that would make a great training tool for all types of workplaces and offices. I found that it was well-organized and very thorough. The selling point for wanting to implement the ideas is how Peterson explains ways to change poor professional behavior and offers an explanation of the consequences of such behavior if it's not changed. I think many professionals need to be aware that their actions and inactions will make an impact, and they must decide whether it's going to be a positive or negative one.I also found extreme value in Peterson's idea of using a human relations approach in the workplace more actively.
