In the new edition of this original and penetrating book, John D. Greenwood provides an in-depth analysis of the subtle conceptual continuities and discontinuities that inform the history of psychology from the speculations of the Ancient Greeks to contemporary cognitive psychology. He also demonstrates the fashion in which different conceptions of human and animal psychology and behavior have become associated and disassociated over the centuries. Moving easily among psychology, history of science, physiology, and philosophy, Greenwood provides a critically challenging account of the development of psychology as a science. He relates the remarkable stories of the intellectual pioneers of modern psychology, while exploring the social and political milieu in which they operated, and dispels many of the myths of the history of psychology, based upon the best historical scholarship of recent decades. This is an impressive overview that will appeal to scholars and graduate students of the history of psychology.

Review "A Conceptual History of Psychology: Exploring the Tangled Web brings intellectual clarity to the fascinating and complex evolution of the discipline known as psychology." David Leary, University of Richmond"This work is a most impressive accomplishment. True to Greenwood's stated objective, he has produced a comprehensive history of psychology that traces the critical conceptual continuities and discontinuities in the development of the discipline. Thanks to his deft orchestration of scholarly breadth, intellectual depth, and engaging writing style, Greenwood's book is at once informative, challenging, and a pleasure to read. It merits an enthusiastic welcome!" James Lamiell, University of Georgetown

An invaluable resource for any prospective pharmacy school student By Amazon Customer This is by far the most comprehensive, well-written guide to pharmacy school admissions that I have found. The author does a great job of explaining all phases of the process and how to properly prepare and execute a decisive plan to get accepted to the school of your choice. Sure, I have found other resources out there, but none have provided the level of depth or guidance that serious applicants need. This is simply the best guide on the market today, bar none!

Only took about 20-30% through for me to understand why I interviewed so poorly. A must read for those pursuing this profession.

Did you know God forbids the tying of shoelaces on Saturday? Or that humans emit an color aura which can only be discerned with a Third Eye? That bountiful harvest requires the flinging of a live goat from a church bell tower? That instead of wishing upon a star, we can wish upon a...cow? Well into the 21st century, our species continues to participate in beliefs and customs that seem more suited to the Bronze Age than the Information Age, some of which involve poisonous snakes, holy smoke, urine bubbles, crystals, tarot cards, aliens, costumed virgins and, of course, an offering plate. Join Seth Andrews for a random romp across the planet and a humorous look at some of humanity's sacred cows.

By Brad Crampton ext 207 The humor varies from a quiet smile to laughing out loud. What I consider to be great humor is the kind that leaves one thinking about their assumptions, and in this regard this book is great humor. It may be that when we learn to laugh at our inconsistencies and tendencies toward magical thinking, we can dismantle them and approach life in a way that more closely aligns with truth or reality. But buyer beware, Satan is revealed to be a kind of socially engaged liberal while christian icons seem to have a flair for the deceptive. Seth shows us that it is indeed a funny world when observed from the most obvious vantage points.

Mr. Andrews has an amazing way with words. He writes in conversation style. It's like you are listening to a great storyteller. You are! I found myself getting a bit squeamish and embarrassed at some of the stuff I once believed myself (psychics) what amazes me about this whole book is, even thought he is pointing out the absurdity of these beliefs. He does it without disrespect. I know that sounds crazy. Like it says it's a "lighthearted look at belief and tradition around the world".I give this book 5 stars. I wish I could give it 105 stars! If you like to laugh. You won't be disappointed.

Entertaining Look at Odd Beliefs By Book Shark Sacred Cows: A Lighthearted Look at Belief and Tradition Around the World by Seth Andrews“Sacred Cows" is a lighthearted look at odd religious beliefs around the world. Premiere atheist podcaster of The Thinking Atheist, video producer and author Seth Andrews takes the reader on a provocative journey on absurd religious beliefs. This entertaining 198-page book includes the following nineteen chapters: 1. Once Bitten, 2. Air Supply, 3. Blowing Smoke, 4. Sacred Cows, 5. Are You Naked Under Those Clothes?, 6. Death Becomes You, 7. Die in the Sky, 8. The Fortune Tellers, 9. The Penis Parade, 10. Santa’s Little Helper, 11. Rise Up and Walk!, 12. Free Long Necks for the Ladies, 13. Circus of the Stars, 14. Sabbath Mode, 15. Can You Put Me Up For The Night?, 16. Wag the Dog, 17. The Order, the Doctrine and the Dude, 18. Running with the Devil, and 19. This is the End (Beautiful Friend).Positives:1. A well-written, conversational, brief, witty and entertaining book to read.2. The fun topic of odd religious beliefs around the world.3. Great visual format. Loved the cartoon drawings that complement the lighthearted narrative.4. Andrews makes it perfectly clear that this is a layman tour of odd beliefs and never deviates from it. In short, he makes a promise and keeps it.5. Andrews engaging and provocative personality shines through the entire book.6. Interesting facts spruced throughout the book. “…an estimated 125 snake-handling churches take literally the words of Mark 16:18, ‘They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.’”7. A look at “Papal infallibility” and the three conditions that must be met to be so.8. A humorous look at Hinduism and an amusing list of animals worshipped around the world.9. The amusing Batshit Scale applied to Mormon beliefs.10. One of the oddest chapters, the Church of Euthanasia. “Its slogan: ‘Save the Planet, Kill Yourself.’”11. A fascinating look at fortune tellers. In reference to Sylvia Browne, “Out of the 115 recorded predictions analyzed by S.I., her success rate came in at...zero.”12. Some chapters are laugh out loud funny, check out the festival called, “Kanamara Matsuri”.13. The true story behind Saint Nick and the Krampus poem.14. A look at the scoundrel that is Peter Popoff. “It seems that Popoff was receiving cues from his bride via a tiny earpiece receiver he’d passed off as a “hearing aid” (why the hell would a faith healer need a hearing aid?), and when Randi went public with the information, Peter Popoff spiraled from protest to admission to humiliation to bankruptcy within the course of a year.”15. Amusing look at body modifiers. “Also in the modify-by-disk department, the Kayan women of Burma have a thing about the neck.”16. Scientology’s E-Meter. “In fact, according to ex-Scientologist Marc Headley, author of the book “Blown for Good: Behind the Iron Curtain of Scientology,” the nifty Mark VIII Super Quantum E-Meter will set you back a cool $5,000.”17. Dudes, there’s a chapter on Jediism and Dudeism.18. The panic behind Dungeons & Dragons exposed.19. End of times examples.20. Notes included.Negatives:1. Some amusing stones left unturned, as an example Jainism and some of their extreme practices such as not harming bugs.2. Also, I would have added a chapter on religious practices with drugs.3. Drawings aside, this book I suspect would be much better as an audio book.4. Fun while it lasted but too brief.5. Not all major religions covered.6. Some missed opportunities came to mind that would have added value: a table illustrating animals worshipped (narrative there but better captured visually via a table).7. No formal bibliography. In summary, this is the perfect book to read on the beach. It’s fun, entertaining and provocative. The high-quality drawings complement the humorous tone. Andrews gives the audience exactly what he promised a light-hearted tour of odd religious beliefs around the world and in that regard he doesn’t disappoint. There were some stones left unturned but overall the book entertains and raises some eyebrows too. I recommend it!Further recommendations: “Here and Now: A Whimsical Take on God” by Jeff Stilwell, “God Bless America: Strange and Unusual Beliefs and Practices in the United States” by Karen Stollznow, “Crucifying America” and “Atheists Can’t Be Republicans” by C.J. Studies in the Horror Film: Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, by Tony Magistrale, John Baxter

Review I've just read your masterful book from cover-to-cover and have to tell you how thorough, creative, complete and helpful the work is - it will definitely become a document from which film students will learn for decades to come. -Veteran filmmaker/IMAX camera developer and Shining cinematographer, Greg MacGillivrayFor this excellent and exhaustive compendium of Shining lore, editor Danel Olson has collected deep-dish essays, unseen pics and exhaustive interviews (with cast and crew), beginning with an introduction by Pixar's Lee Unkrich (a noted Shining zealot). A satisfying study in filmmaking, not kooky Room 237 theorising, it feels like nothing has been overlooked. -Ian Nathan, Empire, 07/2015 (print) Book of the Month... Enthusiasts will drool over the immaculate detail put into this 10-years-in-the-making tome. -C. Jackson, Fangoria 07/2015 (print)Cover[ing] everything fans of the film ever wanted to know, the hefty tome is packed with academic essays, as well as new and classic interviews with the movie's cast and crew, including the elusive Kubrick... It illuminates interesting facts that have only come to light through this publication, including that Jane Fonda was originally considered for the role of Wendy Torrance and co-screenwriter Diane Johnson wanted to bring a feminist bent to the character... The book [also] boasts incredible alternative poster artwork. -Andrea Subissati, Rue Morgue, 07/2015 (print)The essays, as Director Lee Unkrich's introduction explains, were provided by 'a range of commentators,' including 'documentarians, philosophers, scientists, literature critics, film scholars and fiction writers' explor[ing] completely different aspect[s] of The Shining... Olson's maximalist efforts pay off here, though: it's the exhaustive, detailed, and complete nature of the The Shining: Studies in the Horror Film that gives it a chance of becoming the definitive scholarly source on a film widely recognized as one of the greatest of all time. -Craig Manning, IndependentPublisher.com, 7/2015Having just been to the Shining reunion and bonded with the surviving crew (and the sadly depleted studio environs), reading your great compendium has been even more fun. It evoked a marvelous time in the business and an especially wonderful shoot. -Steadicam/SkyCam/DiveCam inventor and Shining cinematographer, Garrett BrownThe SHINING book looks splendid!! -Guillermo del Toro"'Here's…Johnny!' While some scary movies usefully encourage a new sweetie to hug you tight in the cinematic darkness, others just leave you, your date and the entire theater audience traumatized. Anyone fascinated by how films are put together, let alone fans of 'The Shining' itself, will immediately recognize the sheer value-for-money of this latest installment in Centipede Press's Studies in the Horror Film. In 750 amazing pages, editor Danel Olson has assembled stills from the movie and casual photos from the set, a dozen essays on director Stanley Kubrick's artistry, an equal number of interviews with the major cast members—Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Joe Turkel, Scatman Crothers and even Lia Beldam, who plays the nude woman in the tub from Room 237—and, perhaps best of all, reminiscences galore by members of the crew of what it was like to work on the production. A major contribution to film history and scholarship."—Michael Dirda in The Washington Post

From the Back Cover                                          "Jack, just make yourself at home..."         For almost four decades, viewers have crept with the Torrances through Overlook corridors and run through its maze. Now in the largest collection of new and reprint interviews, essays, and reminiscences on Stanley Kubrick's The Shining to date (along with unseen photographs), we can discover who or what else moved beside us.        Crafting the ultimate slow-burn movie out of 1.3 million feet of film (and tempting Shinologists to scry its hidden messages), Kubrick and team abandoned a traditional arc and classical three-act structure for something altogether different, affecting, and lasting. Editor Danel Olson invites cast, crew, and film scholars to explain how. An illuminating introduction from acclaimed Oscar-winning writer/director/producer Lee Unkrich ushers the discussion, asking why the snowbound story still means so much for pop culture, filmmakers, and us.

About the Author Danel Olson is the Shirley Jackson Award and World Fantasy Award-winning editor of a six volume original fiction print series, Exotic Gothic. His other edited works in print include 21st Century Gothic: Great Gothic Fiction Since 2000 and The Exorcist: Studies in the Horror Film. His forthcoming publication is The Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth: Studies in the Horror Film featuring pre-production art supplied from Director Guillermo del Toro never published before.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. DON'T OVERLOOK THIS BOOK!!!!!!! By Richard Masloski Why is Stanley Kubrick's film THE SHINING the voguish vortex that it has become over the decades, since its first appearance on the silver scream-screen in 1980? Why is it so loved and embraced by so many? What is the reason for the mystic chord that binds and pulls myriad movie mavens to this horror film? It speaks to them in symbols and secrets which they then decode and deliver unto us, the supposedly uninitiated, the baffled and perplexed - even though many of their readings of the film are more off-the-wall than anything in the actual Overlook Hotel itself! (One reading has THE SHINING as Kubrick's secret confession for having faked the moon landing.) And because Stanley Kubrick has a overly inflated reputation for being a perfectionist in his films, his movie mistakes are mistakenly interpreted by his acolytes as having much more meaning than Kubrick ever intended. (Perhaps, though, he would have ultimately preferred his mistakes to be re-imagined as artistic intentions.) But mistakes were made in his movies! He was NOT perfect. One only need watch the first shot inside Claire Quilty's mansion in the opening of LOLITA to see the major mistake of someone - perhaps Kubrick himself! - quickly leaving the scene before the entrance of James Mason. Unless, of course, Kubrick's over-arching plan all along was for his films to be viewed as a canon, as chapters in a book rather than simply individual films. In this interpretation, coming events cast their shadows before. Perhaps the ghostly figure in the beginning of LOLITA is NOT a mistake at all, but rather a precognitive, subconsciously generated image of the ghost of a guest from the Overlook Hotel, the lost soul of a perpetual party-goer popping up at the Overlook's 1921 Fourth of July party and then haunting Quilty's gothic mansion decades later. Wait! Hold the phone and freeze the frame! Is that possibly Jack Torrance himself hurrying out of the scene, leaving an evil whiff of his influence for Humbert Humbert to inhale and thus follow in the murderous footsteps of Grady and Torrance and all killers whose dark destiny in Life is to celebrate Death? There are mistakes in THE SHINING as well. Continuity errors and even questionable approaches to the direction. Why have ominous music playing before Danny on his bike turns a corner and sees the Grady ghosts? The same with the scene wherein he first sees them: why the tip-off music and the phony zoom shot onto his face as he sees them before we do? Why the Spirit Store skeletons in the lobby that Wendy sees that look like something out of any Halloween haunted house attraction? In Vivian Kubrick's "Making of..." documentary, Stanley is seen adamantly insisting to a brow-beaten Shelley Duvall that what she is doing with her character in a certain scene looks fake. Well, someone should have had the courage to tell him that the corpse dummies in the lobby looked fake! And didn't add, but rather detracted from the ghostly ambiance he labored so to create. And why are ALL the lights ALWAYS on in the Overlook? Didn't the Torrances consider - before they all went batty - Ullman's electric bill once he returned to reopen the place come spring? Why would 70 year old Dick Hallorann cross the country in plane, car, snowcat and on foot and go to the Overlook in a blizzard knowing well enough of the probable dangers in store and NOT take any help with him? Larry Durkin probably would have accompanied him if asked! He looked like a powerful backup to take along! And simply as a horror movie, I never found any of it frightening, despite Kubrick's avowed intent to make the scariest horror film ever. No, it was always too much The Jack Show for it to ever be taken seriously. Jack Nicholson and Jack Torrance were way all over the place, and to me that both made the film - and also diminished it. Anyway...Despite it all, I love the movie! Even though that love is a bit like Jack T's purported love of 'the little s.o.b.' that is his son. And having this love/hate relationship to the movie is actually a mirror to the movie and its many messages itself - and the movie is replete with mirror images, reflections, doublings, contrasts. The movie is about love and hate, life and death, warmth and cold, all of the contrasts that make life the conundrum that it will always be - and even, most likely, will continue to be once we ourselves pass over. Contrasts, yes. So we have Hallorann's first appearance as he walks from the same direction that Grady's ghost will later come from and collide with Jack. But the cook is all about life and health and being happy by staying regular with prunes. This is why he talks to the mother and child in the kitchen, in the food storage, amongst the very staffs of life - whereas Grady talks to Jack in the toilet after having spilled and soiled the man carrying the soul he and the Overlook aim to steal. Life and Death, the Kitchen and the Crapper. "Great party, isn't it?" even though the ghost who says this has a split, bloodied head! This book is magisterial! It is beautifully designed and published, handsome and hefty to hold. It is overflowing with insights, interviews, photographs and then some. I only wish that Danny Lloyd had taken part in this epic production. A map of the Overlook would have been wonderful as well. But with Halloween fast approaching and then after that the cold and snow of a winter at the Overlook, I can think of no better book to curl up with and devour - even as it will undoubtedly be devouring you!

This massive tome of a book is filled with interviews, lengthy essays, and gorgeous photo spreads. Don't think - just purchase the thing already. You'll be happy you did.

Hickey One of a recent spate of useful books about Stanley Kubrick and his work, this collection of critical essays and interviews, many of them new, contains fascinating theories and analysis, personal stories and production information that I, an avid Kubrick fan since 1968, had not read before. If you've ever wanted to talk to somebody who worked on a Kubrick film, here they are, recounting their experiences on "The Shining" in detail. Actors (Jack, Shelly, Joe Terkel, the Grady twins, the bellhop, the girl who says "Good-bye, Mr. Ullman," the girl in the bathtub, etc.), technicians, designers, assistants, camera and sound crew, longtime Kubrick collaborators and others who swore never to work for him again are all here, and they recall their experiences openly and with humor. Some of the story-tellers' memories conflict -- due, no doubt, to the years that have passed -- and a few of their memories are contradicted by the film itself, but you will find plenty of first-hand information about Kubrick's highly collaborative working methods and mercurial personality that will probably surprise you, since so much of it contradicts the Kubrick legend. After reading this, I watched "The Shining" again (I'm up to around 20 times over 35 years), and this book helped to refresh my enthusiasm for of the film. I found myself fascinated again by its mysteries and methods, felt by the end as if I had spent a whole winter inside that hotel, and discovered much in this endlessly complex work that is still new and surprising. If the film itself weren't so enthralling, this book would be a curiosity; because it is Kubrick's "The Shining" they're talking about, it's an indispensable gem.

Following on from the first two books in his 'Genesis Trilogy', Lawrence Swaim tells the amazing stories of people who broke the trauma bond, and created new lives for themselves. Including, among others: Norman Finkelstein (whose parents were both Holocaust survivors) who broke free from the inter-generational trauma in his family system by exposing extensive corruption in his community--and in American society--and by working for social justice in the Middle East; Eric Lomax, a former British soldier in the far east, who broke free from his haunting traumatic memories by meeting and reconciling with the Japanese man who had tortured him fifty years before, with the help of his brave and insightful wife; Gerry Adams who, together with his IRA and Sinn Fein comrades, broke free of the trauma of Northern Ireland's civil war, finally redeeming himself by questioning some of his own assumptions and then dedicating himself to achieving peace in the Good Friday (Peace) Agreement of 1998. This is a definitive book about personal struggle against traumatic memory, but also about how trauma bonding operates in society. It is the author's belief that unresolved feelings of psychological trauma are the wheelhouse of systemic evil, whether of the dictator, the demagogue or the criminal psychopath. It is by manipulating shared traumatic memories that tyrants control people, and get them to do terrible things they would never otherwise do.

Overcoming Systemic Evil By Miriam Knight This book is difficult to read, detailing as it does some of the most horrific episodes of brutality and evil in the wars and armed conflicts of recent history. It is however ultimately encouraging, because, it tells the story of people who have bravely told the truth and found the way to maintain their humanity in the face of evil and serve the greater good. The trauma bond in the title refers to that quirk in the human psyche whereby victims of torture or brutality may identify with those who hold power over them and then go on to vent their pain through aggression toward others. The chapter that gives the book its name is about Norman Finkelstein, the son of two Holocaust survivors, who wrote his PhD thesis on exposing the untruths in a book written to morally justify the expulsion of the Palestinians from their villages during the establishment of the state of Israel. Later published as a book, Finkelstein's work earned him the enmity of the Israel lobby and indirectly resulted in his being blacklisted from academia despite being recognized as a gifted researcher and teacher. There is a chapter about Eric Lomax, whose story about ultimately forgiving his Japanese torturer was made into a movie with Colin Firth called “The Railway Man.” Another chapter talks about the work of Gerry Adams and his brave decision to seek a political solution to the Irish troubles that had cost so many lives over 30 years.Iris Chang was a Chinese American whose grandparents and parents were present in Nangking during the Japanese invasion and exceptionally brutal treatment and massacre of its citizens. Known as the Rape of Nanking, the history of these events had been suppressed, presumably due to the US desire to foster good relations with Japan and avoid embarrassing revelations. While the other stories in the book were about freeing oneself from the effects of the trauma, in this case Iris was working on behalf of an entire community to give voice to a story that had been silenced because of political pressures. Iris was driven to write several highly regarded books on the subject, at considerable cost to her delicate mental state, and interviewing survivors of the massacre for her last one may have contributed to her suicide.Another particularly moving chapter for me was the story of Noam Chayut, an Israeli author and former soldier who was moved to become one of the founders Breaking the Silence - www.breakingthesilence.org.il - an organization of Israeli soldiers dedicated to talking about their experiences serving in the occupied territories, and exposing to the Israeli public the reality of everyday life for the Palestinians who live there. What ties these and all the other chapters together is the author's thesis that two things are necessary to break the trauma bond and successfully combat systemic evil: one is to acknowledge the truth about a situation and speak of it to others, and the other is to take some kind of positive action for the greater good. This brings to mind the quotation from Edmund Burke, "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." Throughout the book are examples of how even good men may be drawn into complicity with terrible acts. When brutality becomes commonplace and winning at any cost is the only criterion of right action, the moral compass loses direction. There are far too many resonances with present day events, and one can only hope that Swaim’s call is more that of a rooster at dawn than a canary in the coal mine. The book would have benefited from some drastic pruning and copy editing. Its length is rather off-putting, which is a pity because it does provide valuable perspectives and sobering food for thought.

Recent developments in Freudian psychoanalysis, particularly the work of Kohut and Winnicott, have led to a convergence with the Jungian position. In Individuation and Narcissism leading Jungian analyst Mario Jacoby attempts to overcome the doctrinal differences between the different schools of depth psychology, while taking into account the characteristic approaches of each. Through a close examination of the actual experience of self, the process of individuation, narcissism and narcissistic personality disorder, the author demonstrates the benefits of a cross-fertilization of ideas and techniques for the professional analyst.

This book is a magnificent tour d'horizon, spanning the crucial decades from Freud to Jung and therefrom to Kohut. The book demonstrates that, in a way, Heinz Kohut merely took Jung a step further and invented a new vocabulary to rephrase some of Jung's insights. He said that pathological narcissism is not the result of excessive narcissism, libido or aggression. It is the result of defective, deformed or incomplete narcissistic (self) structures. Kohut postulated the existence of core constructs which he named: the Grandiose Exhibitionistic Self and the Idealized Parent Imago (see below). Children entertain notions of greatness (primitive or naive grandiosity) mingled with magical thinking, feelings of omnipotence and omniscience and a belief in their immunity to the consequences of their actions. These elements and the child's feelings regarding its parents (which are also painted by it with a brush of omnipotence and grandiosity) - coagulate and form these constructs. The child's feelings towards its parents are reactions to their responses (affirmation, buffering, modulation or disapproval, punisment, even abuse). These responses help maintain the self-structures. Without the appropriate responses, grandiosity, for instance, cannot be transformed into adult ambitions and ideals. To Kohut, grandiosity and idealization were positive childhood development mechanisms. Even their reappearance in transference should not be considered a pathological narcissistic regression. am Vaknin, author of "Malignant Self Love - Narcissism Revisited".

If truly recognized as an effort to compare "The Psychology of Self in Jung & Kohut," one can understand the difficulty of comparison in paralleling two different psychoanalytic careers in two different continents with two remarkably different approaches in mind. Yet, one must appreciate and recognize that the work of these two men in psycho-analytic-self-object psychology (Jung's unique presentation of Psycho-Analytical and Archetypal Psychology) and psychoanalytic theory (especially the Narcissistic and Borderline Personality emphasis of Kohut as Self-Object Psychology) has a very interesting, meaningful, and useful communications overlap.Mario Jacoby does make this overlap of interest meaningful and rewarding for those who have a necessary (but not necessarily completed) background in reading Jung and Kohut to follow and understand his presentation of their views of the self. In my own readings of these master-minds, I interpret Jung as a lofty-spritualizing-cultural personality; while, Kohut strikes me as being a "down-to-earth" hardcore realist in dealing with the personality problems of boarderline narcissistic disturbances. The very nature of this comparative work is a challenge, but someone with competence and a high degree of credibility had to do it, and this effort to offer a comprehensive introductory comparison of these two men and their thoughts regarding psycho-analysis as a healing develop-mental process is very worthy. In the Jungian work "Celebrating Soul: Preparing for the New Religion" by Lawrence W. Jaffe, I found myself reflecting on an interpretation that the new temple will take (based on Jung's projected interpretation of a dream) six hundred years. Symbolically and structurally understood in my thoughts, each pillar of this new system will represent a comprehensive variation of emerging pscho-analytical develop-mental systems. Hence, Jacoby's comparative work may subscribe to Jung's notion that any fixed psycho-analytical or theraputic system is not worth very much if it cannot add or learn something new about our-selves. I personally found many areas of Jacoby's presentation offering something new to my own understanding of my-self, my life experiences, and my life-long interest in psycho-analytical thought as a healing develop-mental field, and as a universal psychologism of learning to be a humane human being. With this in mind, I sense that a well-grounded foundation in Jungian Psychology makes Heinz Kohut's work in Self-Object Psychology much more meaningful and useful in terms of a global theraputic and cultural application; especially, for those who are interested in pursuing "Self-Analysis"...as a universal practice of self-discipline and personal maintenance.

Narcissism as the beginning of growth to maturity, not the tragic end of an unlived life By MARITA DE WET Jacoby's style is both intellectually clear and empathic, from the heart. He explores the many modes of experience and behavior that we characterize as Narcissistic, and the common denominator amongst them. Aligning with Kohut to see Narcissism as a developmental task, he explores the meaningful rewards of Narcissistic maturation (empathy, humor, creativity, wisdom). He writes with great sensitivity and honesty about treatment of Narcissistic Disorders. The book gave me valuable insights and practical guidelines.

May 12, 2015 Dear diary— Wait, no. There’s no way I’m starting off like that. This is an explorer’s journal, not a book about my middle school crushes. Adventurer’s Log, Day 1: Unknown time—perhaps morning I, Sir Benjamin Shortsword, arrived in the new world today, with the blessings of my people ringing in my ears, and outfitted solely with this pencil and diary. Stevespeed to me on this dark and dangerous quest, filled with unknown monsters and devilish evils. May I endure with the perseverance of our founding father, Steve, and fight till victory is won, or until I meet my bitter end in death. I shall fight on, never failing to— Oh, look, a sheep. Unknown time— late evening Enough flowery talk… I should probably just tell you what’s going on.

Thanks to the author for these techniques, as they help as much as possible to look at the events of the book through the eyes of the main character, to dive into his thoughts and feelings. A fascinating story!

This was a different type of read, but being the avid fan I am, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The story line was well thought out and followed the game accurately. I look forward to the next portion of the boom!

Although it was written for children in mind, if you enjoyed comics as a child then you would enjoy this book too. Great work.

A “Medical Mom” is a mother of a child with medical difficulties. Typically these mothers have been through one or more hospital admissions. Their child may or may not have a diagnosis. At first they’re frazzled and unsure, but over time they become staunch advocators for their children and their medical needs. My goal is to reach the frazzled and unsure beginners and expedite their development into the advocates their children need them to be. Everyone has to start somewhere. The journey to becoming a fully-fledged medical mama is no exception. Whether you have some medical knowledge already, or don’t have a clue what any of the words the doctor is using mean, you’re in the right place. I’m going to make sure you know the basics. By the time you’re through, you’ll know how to survive admission, whether it’s a day or a month. You can do this. I know it’s overwhelming. The things the doctors say may not even be making sense right now. If you’ve already received a diagnosis, your head is still spinning trying to figure out what that means for you and your child. If you haven’t, but your child is obviously struggling and no one knows why, you’re not alone. There is a ton of women out there, just like you, which have no idea what’s wrong with their child. If you’re a medical dad, let me apologize in advance. Most of the medical parents I know are mothers. Many fathers help, but the mothers frequently provide the majority of medical care to the child. If you are your child’s primary medical caregiver, you’re just as awesome as us moms! Please don’t feel intimidated by the fact I refer to mothers throughout the text. It applies to dads too.

Review "Being the mother of a child who spent the majority of their first few months in a hospital, I found Ashley Bergris' book, Becoming a Medical Mom, to be a beneficial guide to any mother. I wish I had this book back then with my son." -OnlineBookClub.org"I give Becoming a Medical Mom a 4 out of 4 rating. Ashley gives the good and bad of most situations in dealing with the basic parts of having a child with medical issues. She is not partial on subjects and doesn't glorify doctors or disdain them. She tells what you will expect, terms and titles you should understand, andthe basics of traversing the initial medical protocol." -OnlineBookClub.org

About the Author Ashley Bergris is a mother to a special needs child. She enjoys writing things she believes will be helpful to other moms with special needs children. Her first book, "Becoming a Medical Mom," is geared specifically toward helping mothers unfamiliar with multi-disciplinary medical care to manage their children's medical treatment. Writing is therapeutic for her, but as she started writing more and more about her son's difficulties she realized the information would be helpful to other mothers in similar situations.

Clear, straightforward, helpful guide By Erin I am an expectant first-time mom and I really enjoyed this very straightforward account of how to best advocate and care for a child with significant medical needs. It's written in a way that moms can understand and clearly explains medical jargon that medical moms might come across. This book would also be a helpful guide to anyone navigating the health system for the first time when caring for a child, an adult or seeking medical care for themselves. By Amazon Customer I've been living the Medical Mom life for nearly 12 years. This book is VERY well written and covers what I wish someone had told me all those years ago when we first embarked on our journey with our very special little girl. Even as a veteran, there were plenty of topics covered that I was able to glean helpful hints and perspective. I would recommend this to ANY parent who finds themselves facing the uncertainty that comes with raising a medically involved child.

In 1945, WWII nurse Clair Randall is transported back in time to the 1700s Scotland. Here she encounters civil war, villains and unrest, and dashing Highland warrior Jamie Fraser. The lives of the heroic characters of the outrageously popular Outlander TV series play out against the lush backdrop of the Scottish countryside--an alchemy of romance, time travel, and historical drama! Based on the equally popular book series by Diana Gabaldon--an international bestseller for 20 years!

Webster Got my calendar and can't wait to use it BUT the pictures are only from the first 8 episodes and are all ones that have out on the internet. Would have like to see some pictures from episodes 9-16 and some that have not been released yet. Maybe in the daily calendar.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Quality photos and more Outlander fan fun By Harold Wolf It is obvious, Outlander is going all out selling merchandise. But this is a fun Outlander addition to any collection. It has photos of the TV series. Best of all, it is priced as low or lower than most calendars. Everyone needs a wall calendar, so this is a no-brainer for Outlander fans.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. There are only 4 photos that I like. By Bird Mommie I don't think a fan of Outlander put the photos together. It is disappointing. There are only 4 photos that I like.

Taschen is nice for an international perspective, not just the ordinary Hollywood critics. These books contain great photos, including behind the scenes pictures, along with filmographies about each of the movies. Very interesting.

For some reasons, under this book title are included reviews written prior to the publication of this book, referring to 2 volumes which could be an extended version that may have some features which the ONE volume lacks, as an introduction to the book and to each filming decade.I’ve mixed feelings about the 2015 version. At first sight the book seems impressive; abundant beautiful films stills album style quality accompanied by comments. Movie synopses contain witty quotations from the motion picture which encapsulate the essence of the whole flick. Film critics are quoted from prestigious journals and magazines, all these features intensify the enjoyment, understanding, insight and ideas beyond the story itself; otherwise they could remain unnoticed when viewing the movie for the first time. BUT, since the book is a compilation of different commentators the movies’ mini-reviews aren’t quality homogenous concerning movie analysis, some just settle for movie synopsis, which is a meagre contribution to the reader. There are additional flaws: movies titles are omitted from the index which makes it a chore to find the movie you’re looking for. On top of that the book was published on June 2015 while the last film dealt with is ONLY till 2000; close to 16 years of movies excellence were omitted by the compiler, a regretful miss. Hence I rate it 3.5 stars!!

Back in New Orleans after more than a decade away, homicide detective Valerie Cabrera is ready to lose herself in a case. But the case―and her new partner―are more than she bargained for. Her new partner, veteran detective Roger Bell, is ready to write off the case before they even begin the investigation, after all it’s “no humans involved,” a case concerning a castoff from so-called polite society. But a local radio personality takes an interest in the case, applying pressure to the NOPD, and reinforcing Valerie’s need to pursue the case and escape her crumbling personal life. A marriage falling apart hounds her, and she is still haunted by the deaths of her parents. When their leads run dry, Valerie pushes harder and starts making mistakes. And in the Crescent City even the tiniest mistake can be fatal…
