A Good Story Lost in Editing By LJHazy "Lillian felt if he ever found out the truth about her he would hate her; he would never have even let her in his home had he known what had brought her here so badly broken. He’d seen the visible scars, but only she knew of the ones that were hidden inside, and it was those that would drive him away from her."  These thoughts expressed by the main female character, Lillian James-Reid, in B.C. Yancey's western romance novel, are directed toward widower Sawyer Weston, the handsome stranger who takes her into his home and helps to heal her physical injuries following her escape from a band of outlaws.  She is found by two children named Paul and Kitty, Weston's neighbors, who run to him for help.  The plot is rather predictable, but the characters are well developed.  About This Book states that this edition is an "updated version:  error's have been fixed"; however, there are numerous errors throughout!  Please re-edit!!! Lost and Found is a nice read, if the reader doesn't become too distracted by the poor editing, especially in the beginning of the novel.  I was willing to stick it out and did enjoy the storyline and characters.

About the Author Jomo London is the creator of Adia Comics.  Wow....that was pretty bland.  I feel I should say a joke or something.  But I'm new to this so I'll have plenty of opportunity to poke fun of myself later.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Black Girls in Comic Strips Making Moves! By Brooklyn Assata Let me first start out by saying..."Yes to this comic strip collection!!""Asia Sunday Comics: Full of Twists Like a Braid" is a breath of fresh air in the comic strip world. It's fun, quirky, innovative and imaginative. This is the type of comic strip that is legible for not just children/youth but adults as well. Creator and cartoonist Jomo London paints a picture of a young girl Adia who is far beyond the average person. According to London, "Along with her friends, Adia Sunday Comics is humorous escape to different situations Adia finds herself in." This is important to take note of because the various storylines bring a level of excitement in which readers can journey with her.Along with fun-loving stories, the small details of color, font style, and of course the art are very much noticeable. Adia, her friends and family are cleverly drawn and add a whimsical flavor to the comic strip. The colors that London uses remind me of art by fellow comic strip and illustrator Jennifer Crute. This work is also reminiscent of some other Sunday comic strips like the look of "Beetle Bailey," the script style of "Hagar the Horrible", and the hopeful and earnest feel of "B.C.", but what makes "Adia Sunday Comics" different is an added charm and "color". In addition, it should be noted that this comic is not just a white comic painted brown, but an original comic cartoon with "mainstream appeal".Now with all great things, sometimes there are places for improvement. A few minor glitches in "Adia Sunday Comics", that may or may not be intentional, include the fact that there are various storylines in this one collection. At points, just when the reader gets into a particular story, it changes to a new one. Being that this is just the beginning of what is to come, according to London, the comic strip would benefit by elaborating on some of the stories within the larger text. For example, one would love to know more about the incident at the zoo with the panda bear, or the jumping over the bar story. Both of these storylines have the potential to be "fun teachable moments" versus just simply a fun and cute dialogue among the characters in the panel. Even despite the above mentioned glitches, with more massaging and extended stories, readers can be further convinced that young black girls are beyond monolithic. Now one things that does leave me wondering is the significance of the title. It's something about the "Full of Twists Like a Braid" that leaves me wanting more. This is just one of the many things that I hope to learn more and see more in future works from London. Plus knowing that there is new material such as "Adia Sunday Comics" gives me further hope that diversity in comic strips is alive and well, and not going anywhere no time soon.To see more from Brooklyn Assata (aka Grace Gipson) you can find her on www.blackgirlnerds.com and on Twitter at @GBreezy20

A new adult romance from Entangled's Embrace imprint...

No kissing. No touching. And definitely no falling in love...

Armed with her besties, an embarrassing number of shots, and her list of 10 Wild Things To Do Before Adulthood, recent grad Cameron Lawson is partying it up before she starts her dream job at New York's biggest ad agency. Her last task? Hook up with a random guy. And while it's so not her style, the super-sexy guy sitting next to her is definitely game. No names. No details.

At least, that was the plan.

On her first day of work, Cameron discovers her hook-up is none other than Aidan Truitt-her new boss's boss. Talk about failing the "no fraternizing with coworkers" policy on an epic level. Especially when Aidan makes it clear their one night was only the beginning. Falling for him could cost her everything, but sometimes the only way to get what you want is by breaking a few rules...

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Great NA read! Love Aidan and Cameron! By Teresa This book is the perfect read for New Adult fans! It has everything I love about the genre, without feeling like every other New Adult book I’ve read. Melissa West’s characters are always likable and her guys are always swoony. No Kissing Allowed was an addictive read and one I was able to finish in a few short hours.Cameron is an awesome heroine and I related to her in so many ways. I was Cameron not too long ago; starting a new job in NYC and while unlike Cameron I have lived here my whole life, it is still a crazy life change. We are both independent and take pride in our success and the competitive streak is something I understand well. So yeah. Me and Cameron would get along just fine and I really loved that about her. I love seeing myself in a character and I saw a lot of myself in Cameron.Aidan, our love interest, is so so swoony. It’s very easy to fall for him. He is driven and successful, but he is also charming and sweet and a great guy. He isn’t an alpha bad boy and I loved him all the more for that. He is simply a good guy and a realistic guy and one that any girl would be lucky to find. He has his hang ups, but everyone does. What I liked about Aidan is that he is willing to work and evaluate and admit when he is wrong. So yeah. Aidan is great.Aidan and Cameron are great together. They are the kind of couple that makes each other stronger. They push one another to be better and don’t try to hold each other back. Despite Aidan being her boss, he never treats her as if he is superior or shows her any preferential treatment. I also loved the low level of angst in this one. Their relationship has the normal ups and downs, but there is no drama and angst just for the fun of it. It was so refreshing to read a book like that and it made me love it even more. All in all, No Kissing Allowed was a great read and New Adult fans should definitely check this one out. Its quick and fun and swoony and not one to miss.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Enchanting and Romantic!! By deb1210 As Cameron gets ready to start her first real job in the working world, she decides to blow caution to the wind and creates a 10 wild things to do before adulthood list. Her friends help her with her list by adding a number eleven: Hook up with a stranger. Cameron is a good girl. Did what she's supposed to do. Go to school, get good grades, get a good job-she doesn't do anything random and definitely has no intention of actually going through with number eleven. Until a guy at the bar has overheard the whole conversation with her friends. He ropes her into kissing him. Soon after she spending the night with him but in the morning shoves him out the door never getting his name not caring because she has no intentions of seeing him again. Cross off number eleven! When she starts her new job, she's introduced to Aiden one of her boss's and its none other than the hook up guy! Oh no! This is uncomfortable and awkward to say the least! Both try to make the best of it but Aiden has a problem. He can't get Cameron out of his head! The more he sees her, the more he can't stay away and he knows he should, especially since his company has a no employees dating policy.I really had a fun time reading this story! I could relate to Cameron and understood her wanting to let loose just once in her life. She's been hurt before vowed never to be weak again. I liked her resolve. She felt like my friend and just wanted to help her anyway I could. I equally liked Aiden-again totally relatable. He's damaged because his father walked out on he and his mom and has always treated them like crap. He never wanted to do that to someone so he just never got into any relationships. Until he wants one with Cameron, but he's afraid. This is my first story by Melissa West and I loved her writing. Not only are the hero and heroine likeable and relatable, the secondary characters are equally intriguing. They added a lot to the story. Although I would've loved to know what was floating around inside Aiden's head at times, this is a enchanting and very enjoyable read! No Kissing Allowed is one of those stories that once you start reading, it gets under your skin and you can't stop!4 stars/3.5 flamesThis book was given to me by the Jeep Diva for the express purpose of an honest review. Her characters are rich and full. They feel real and I want to be part of their lives. Her stories are captivating and satisfying from start to finish. She's quickly become a one-click author for me.In No Kissing Allowed, Cameron is letting loose for the first time before her first real job starts. A kiss turns to more with a hot guy at the bar and she wakes up to him in her bed. It's not her normal MO and she ushers him out without getting him name, though he does look vaguely familiar. Expecting to never see him again, she's shocked when he turns up running the meeting on her first day at her new job. Not just her boss but her bosses boss. And no kissing is allowed between employees.I love Cameron. She's a relationship girl who spend four years with the wrong guy only to have him sweetly break up with her. Feeling the need to make up for lost time but also wanting to focus on her career, she's totally taken by Aidan. She never backs down from this man that owns her heart, she says what's on her mind and is a strong women. While he's not a relationship kinda guy, maybe she deserves some fun times with him. He's so worth the risk.Aidan is a different kind of no relationship guy. He's afraid of becoming his father, though he's far from him. His dad (a total jerk) left him and his mom when he was young and has treated them like dirt forever. Aidan sees the way to avoid hurting a women and child that way is to avoid marriage and family. And it's worked for him until now. But now, he can't get Cameron out of his head. Staying away from her is painful. Hurting her keeps him up at night. Distance just doesn't work. What I thought was interesting about this story was the turn in the story. Most romance have a falling out and then a period of pain before something changes and things are resolved. This story felt different. That falling out/painful period was not the regular fair. It's hard to explain without spoiling so I won't. Just that I liked it...a lot.If you've ever read Melissa West, you already know you want this book. If you haven't had the pleasure, then make this your first. It's an amazing read.

The films of the Coen brothers have become a contemporary cultural phenomenon. Highly acclaimed and commercially successful, over the years their movies have attracted increasingly larger audiences and spawned a subculture of dedicated fans. Shunning fame and celebrity, Ethan and Joel Coen remain maverick filmmakers, producing and directing independent films outside the Hollywood mainstream in a unique style combining classic genres like film noir with black comedy to tell off-beat stories about America and the American Dream. This study surveys Oscar-winning films, such as Fargo (1996) and No Country for Old Men (2007), as well as cult favorites, including O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000) and The Big Lebowski (1998). Beginning with Blood Simple (1984), it examines major themes and generic constructs and offers diverse approaches to the Coens' enigmatic films. Pointing to the pulp fiction of Dashiell Hammett, James M. Cain, and Raymond Chandler, the study appreciates the postmodern aesthetics of the Coens' intertextual creativity.

I can’t express enough how stupid his theories are By Amazon Customer If you are buying this book you are probably doing so because it is a requirement for Jeffery Adams class at UNCG. I am not writing this as a spiteful student, I am writing this because I am trying to spare anyone who reads this book, which is nothing but Jeffery Adams bizarre theories. His theories are bizarre and condescending to anyone he does not consider to be an intellectual- which is most people. What is most aggravating is that Jeffery Adams theories are not supported by any evidence what so ever. He often contradicts what the Coen brothers themselves say in interviews, in order to support his own theory. The Coen Brothers would not approve of this book nor Jeffery Adams. His theory of homosexual overtones, in “all” of the Coen brothers films, is offensive to everyone in the homosexual community. I can’t express enough how stupid his theories are. If two male characters sit in a car together, or punch each other or if a male character has a girl’s name, by his theory those characters are Homosexual. Which is offensive because that’s not what homosexuality is. But Adam asserts that these things are obvious to the well-educated and if it isn’t obvious to you then you’re too dumb. Again, these theories would be fine, if they were supported by any evidence at all and if Adams didn’t criticize any other interpretations. The Coen brothers themselves say that they want people to enjoy their movies with their own interpretations and to not over-analyze them. Jeffery Adams goes against that and holds his own opinions and theories above everything else. Please buy a different book and if you’re taking this class please drop it- Jeffery Adams was the worst teacher I ever had simply because he is soooo pretentious and refused to validate anyone’s ideas nor does he treat people with a decent amount of respect.

When I saw how big the book is, I never thought I’d finish it within a month. It’s a fantasy adventure with a strong emphasis on fantasy. I simply love the portrayal of bards and their magic in this book, especially when they’re in their orchestras. It’s like watching a fireworks display in words. The world building is just spectacular. The author does a really good job in description, but I love it the most when I come across a city and its cultures. Every time I did, I felt like I was walking with the characters. Speaking of which, don’t expect any Game of Thrones depth in here. Many of the characters that are introduced have little chances of showing up again. I’m pretty sure I’ve read like twenty names once and never saw them again. With this, you can tell the author is new. The editing is not professional with a number of word slip-ups here and there. This guy needs a better editor to polish things up. However, they aren’t too bad and many of the times could paint pictures I don’t think actual paintings could portray.I love the characters, the places, and the plot, and wanting to know what could happen next makes me excited for the second book. Strongly recommend for readers, and for the author, a better editor.

Jorge Lanata

When I was a young man I thought that metaphysics was the most exciting (and important) thing in the world. I wish now that I had not wasted so much time on the imponderable questions of metaphysics but had used it to more worthwhile effect. Rather than study philosophy, I should have studied insects. In the little essays that follow, I have no grand theory to prove, no single message to convey. Small things and slight occurrences have caught my attention and caused me to reflect a little. I hope only to please the reader. — Theodore Dalrymple

Out Into The Beautiful World, by Theodore Dalrymple

Review

In his modest claim to have no grand theory or single message, Theodore Dalrymple echoes the great essayist Michel de Montaigne - whom he resembles in wisdom, wit, felicity of prose, and insatiable curiosity, as well.

- Myron Magnet, author of The Founders at Home and editor-at-large of City Journal

This is a constantly engaging and humorous collection of the always informative and original observations of one of the most elegant and erudite contemporary writers in the English language.

- Conrad Black, author of Franklin Delano Roosevelt: Champion of Freedom, Richard M. Nixon: A Life in Full, A Matter of Principle, Flight of the Eagle: The Grand Strategies That Brought America from Colonial Dependence to World Leadership and Rise To Greatness: A History of Canada from the Vikings to the Present

Theodore Dalrymple has done something that all the severe literary critics had decreed impossible. He has revived the essay. In the course of chasing his hat where it listeth, Dalrymple discovers the extraordinary multifariousness of human life from tender book inscriptions to "healthcare serial killers" and reveals all of it to us in language that is sometimes witty, sometimes tender, sometimes sharp, and always exactly right.

John O Sullivan, author of The President, the Pope, and the Prime Minister: Three Who Changed the World and editor of Quadrant --New English Review

About the Author

Theodore Dalrymple is a former prison doctor and psychiatrist. He has been arrested as a spy in Gabon, been sought by the South African police for violating apartheid, visited the site of a civilian massacre by the government of Liberia, concealed his status as a writer for fear of execution in Equatorial Guinea, infiltrated an English communist group in order to attend the World Youth Festival in North Korea, performed Shakespeare in Afghanistan, smuggled banned books to dissidents in Romania, been arrested and struck with truncheons for photographing an anti-government demonstration in Albania and crossed both Africa and South America using only public transportation. He is also the author of more than two dozen books and innumerable essays.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Updated Review: Upon a Second Reading One Finds Much to Admire and Enjoy By Michael Revision on 12-15-2015: Trust not the whimsy of critics (like me).To my surprise, gratification, and slight embarrassment I found a second reading of Out Into The Beautiful World worthy of the highest rating. Since few have rated this title my original three stars seem to carry atypical (and unworthy) weight. Plainly stated, I was wrong the first time around. Though this essay collection tacks a new, softer rhetorical heading away from earlier works like Second Opinion and If Symptoms Persist, fans of "Dr. Dalrymple" will quickly recognize his droll, quick-witted, and acerbic style; the same style chalk full of dry humor and poignant expository asides about "life at the bottom" of English society so utterly the domain of the present author, George Orwell, Henry Mayhew, and Charles Dickens.Despite such hefty intellectual company Daniels (Dr. Dalrymple) meets the challenge again and again of reprising and updating their collective tradition of articulating the immeasurably dismal states of the poor and criminal underclass. If only someone on my side of the pond could do as much to reveal the banality (and triviality) of the evil, lazy, and insane among us in America. (Perhaps it says something of our country's anti-intellectualism and ridicule of anything glinting at highbrow that we have no one either prepared [or willing] to do us this much-needed favor.)In reviewing the motives for my original poor assessment I think it stemmed entirely from my own wrong-headed expectations and not from any intrinsic fault of the book's style or content. Out Into The Beautiful World is sunnier and altogether more nostalgic and philosophical than the books Daniels wrote while working as a prison and NHS doctor; more introspection than invective: we learn something of the man behind the mask (and he is thoughtful, humane, self-conflicted, and utterly honest). These essays are particularly enjoyable for those readers who have followed their author from the get-go, an observation which walks some few steps in defense of my original suggestion that new readers not make this their first "Dr. Dalrymple" book.Indeed, while earlier books went to some great lengths to shield the author's identity, Out Into The Beautiful World reveals the man behind the tweedy pseudonym directly on the copyright page. Since his retirement, it seems Daniels has sloughed more than his rhetorical cloak: This book is altogether more thoughtful and reminiscent; more latte than bitter black coffee (though the enjoyment of either scales with the occasion and ones mood); sweet milk in lemon tea; a contemplative dusting of snowflakes instead of a blizzard; more nocturne than scherzo; the quieter, lilting melody of a calm sea rather than the roiling, frothing, vigorous percussion of a gale-force typhoon. This is what I meant by misaligned expectations. Both parts of the preceding antonymic juxtapositions are meritorious in their own rights but you will admit, as metaphors for Daniels variety of prose, they occupy their own non-overlapping and exclusive domains.I owe much of my own limited and pell-mell intellectual development directly to Anthony Daniels and his books. His relentless citations and literary allusions and metaphors have led me to purchase and read so many books that it is not unsafe to claim one-third the present quantity of my library’s inventory came out of the pages of his books. It seems uncontroversial to propose an acid test for great writing is one’s desire to revisit the material, to linger over a particular book’s sentences and paragraphs, parsing and musing over the novelty of the syntax or the proper use of cliché and metaphor to render an argument with unique clarity; and it is in this regard that Daniels’ writing has beckoned my repeated attentions while newer books from lesser authors pile up around my feet like grains of sand in the path of a gentle but otherwise persistent tide of trivial gibberish and pabulum. His prose are so densely wooded with referential nods to giant minds of the past that only a classical scholar could proceed without an encyclopedia and collegiate dictionary nearby. Indeed, to one seeking to carry on “the great conversation” Dr. Dalrymple is an intellectual Virgil, and I should praise him in the same style as the student who issued Allan Bloom his greatest compliment (“You are not a professor of political science, but a travel agent.”) Anthony Daniels is not an essayist but a bibliographer; less psychiatrist than philosopher; less a writer than a reader; less a doctor than a teacher and a guide. His writing is dense without being impenetrable; his references challenge the reader without overwhelming him. Out Into The Beautiful World and, indeed, all Daniels’ writing is to the essay form what Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights is to art: one cannot take it all in the first time around. And he manages all this elaboration without losing the reader in a maze of pseudo-profundities; and he doesn’t bore and confuse the reader until they are hypnotized by virtue of their misunderstanding into agreement as does, say, Hegel with his Phenomenology. (Hegel's artistic doppelganger is almost certainly the infinitely nonsensical Jackson Pollock.) By comparison, even the most abstract of Daniels’ essays are portraits of lucidity and concision. In all these regards, who other than Robert Burton or Montaigne has Daniels to second? I can think of no higher summary of Daniels’ talents and contributions to my intellectual life and, I’m certain, those of most of his readers than to include him in this company. It is surely the fittest exercise of a reader to constantly seek out authors who challenge him; with little hesitation do I claim Anthony Daniels will hold this vaulted status perennially.I hope critics of my original review will grant me the same clemency Daniels asks for in this book's essay about Rwanda, buy Out Into The Beautiful World, and enjoy it as much as I did. Thank you. - Michael. My Original Review:I love Daniels' writing (aka Dr. Dalrymple). The spines of my copies of If Symptoms Persist, Second Opinion, and Spoilt Rotten are shredded and falling apart from multiple readings (this is slightly misleading because I only read the Kindle versions but ever so much as an eBook has a spine, and ever so much as said spines may be shredded—my Dr. Dalrymple eBooks are indeed falling apart). He is as close as anyone has come to matching Orwell with his stoic commentary, invective prose, and laugh-out-loud subjects and is a lauded member of the modern occupational essay canon along with Bill Bryson, David Foster Wallace, and Frank Chalk. If you have *not* read the above-listed books (or if you are considering Out Into The Beautiful World as your first Dalrymple purchase) please stop reading and purchase If Symptoms Persist or Second Opinion (or both). The failure of this most recent book should not detour a reader from the joys of the above-mentioned superior essay collections.Indeed, the principle intended audience of this review is that class of readers who have read and enjoyed Anthony Daniels' writing and just noticed (as I did) that he's put out a new book. I purchased it on impulse and am almost embarrassed to report the degree to which I found this most recent work lackluster, forced, and otherwise unexceptional. I read the first several chapters, sampled the next several, then finally gave up and for the first time, did not finish an Anthony Daniels book. It's disheartening and I hesitated to publish my opinion here in this review because of how much I revere the man's intellect.Out Into The Beautiful World is a collection of too personal musings (one cannot call this a collection of essays) about well, quite a lot of disparate nonsense. Unlike pretty much anything Daniels has previously written, these articles have the feel of personal diary entries or, at best, meandering blog posts. That is not to say the book has no merit: it does. I especially enjoyed the article about meeting "the fly man" outside a courtroom but (and you've all experienced this with certain essayists) at some point the ubiquity of the personal pronoun ("I") seemed to obscure the content and jump out of the page like a Magic Eye image. There were far too many "I's" for a writer of Daniels' caliber. Without qualification, it's just lazy writing. To conclude: While a few articles glint at the superlative genius behind better-written earlier works, Out Into The Beautiful World was a messy hodgepodge of mediocre quibbling by an author who has given his readers enough brilliant material to earn a get-out-of-jail-free card on this slip-up.

Now that my kids are grown up, I am considering liposuction to do away with the extra fat. But with the amount of information available both online and by word of mouth from friends, it is often intimidating! I have read another book by the same author and found it really useful hence decided to give it a try. If I could describe it in one sentence, it would be, It has everything and yet not too much of anything. It doesn't overburden you with information but rather guides you regarding the various types, pre-treatment precautions as well as post treatment ones, possible complications etc. I think I am much more clearer now regarding liposuction and willing to go forward with it!

My sister is considering liposuction and I definitely made her read this book. It addresses everything you need to know about the procedure and the different types there are. I was impressed by the amount of information in a short book and the ease I found in reading it. It explains all of the steps, results and I found the history of liposuction rather fascinating. It is not a cure all, nor a fly by night thing, you have to really take care of your self before and after for it to be successful. My sister is now armed with every possible aspect and it will certainly help in her decision. The author did an outstanding job on this book and I highly recommend it to anyone who is wanting to take this step. All of your questions are answered.

She was the American woman who changed Australian history. She broke through barriers for women in architecture and spent 15 years working for Chicago architect Frank Lloyd Wright, in the formative years of the Prairie School of Architecture. Then she teamed up with Walter Burley Griffin working with him in winning the design contest for the new Australian capital city, Canberra. She was an architect, artist, environmentalist, social observer and community builder, yet her work has been constantly overshadowed by the famous men in her life. The first biography of Marion Mahony Griffin in her own right, Making Magic tells Marion's story. It dates back to the days of Abraham Lincoln who was friends with her grandparents as a travelling lawyer in Illinois. It follows the story of her life over three continents - America, Australia and India. And her love affair with her husband which produced such historic results. A woman with a fierce sense of idealism and a passion for nature, Marion always had a mind of her own. She developed fine artistic and architectural skills which helped to make Wright and then Griffin famous. A woman in a man's world, she made history with her pioneering role as a female architect. Her creative work was sheer magic. Faced with her own challenges, she drew on her energy and creativity to refashion her role in a new country. She was instrumental in setting up a unique community in the Sydney suburb of Castlecrag. Her paintings, drawings and descriptions of the Australian bushland produced another exercise in magic. Yet few know her real story. Making Magic comes as Marion's role is now being recognised with accolades in America and Australia. Northwestern University Professor David Van Zanten describes her as the Frida Kahlo of the Chicago school of architecture. "Everywhere and nowhere, forgotten then suddenly remembered, unique in her work." Drawing on her diaries and historical records in libraries in Australia and America, and conversations with Griffin experts home owners and others with links to Marion's life, Making Magic tells the story of a most unusual woman. It puts the case for her recognition as an important figure who emerged from Chicago's Prairie School of architecture and tells an inspiring story of a woman and her own special brand of magic. About the Author: Glenda Korporaal is a journalist and writer based in Sydney, Australia. She has lived in Canberra and Washington, DC, and has a Master of Arts (Economics) from George Washington University, Washington, DC. The author of four books, she has a long time fascination with the work of Frank Lloyd Wright and interest in the ties between Australia and America.

By Broadsheet This is a very well-written, readable story of Marion Mahony Griffin, an intriguing figure in the Prairie School of architecture, and her husband, architect Walter Burley Griffin. The focus is on Marion and her adventures as an architect, artist, community builder, and lover, planter, and passionate painter of Australian trees. Much of it is set in Australia, where the couple has to contend with anti-American feelings of British colonials during the first years of World War I, when the U.S. was staying neutral. The story is told using wide research and lots of letters of friends, neighbors and others who observed the Griffins in their daily life. It is up to date; the last event is the naming of a beach for Marion in Rogers Park, Ill., in May of 2015.

How is this book unique?

Formatted for E-Readers, Unabridged & Original version. You will find it much more comfortable to read on your device/app. Easy on your eyes. Includes: 15 Colored Illustrations and Biography The Importance of Being Earnest, A Trivial Comedy for Serious People is a play by Oscar Wilde. First performed on 14 February 1895 at the St James's Theatre in London, it is a farcical comedy in which the protagonists maintain fictitious personæ to escape burdensome social obligations. Working within the social conventions of late Victorian London, the play's major themes are the triviality with which it treats institutions as serious as marriage, and the resulting satire of Victorian ways. Contemporary reviews all praised the play's humour, though some were cautious about its explicit lack of social messages, while others foresaw the modern consensus that it was the culmination of Wilde's artistic career so far. Its high farce and witty dialogue have helped make The Importance of Being Earnest Wilde's most enduringly popular play. The successful opening night marked the climax of Wilde's career but also heralded his downfall. The Marquess of Queensberry, whose son Lord Alfred Douglas was Wilde's lover, planned to present the writer with a bouquet of rotten vegetables and disrupt the show. Wilde was tipped off and Queensberry was refused admission. Soon afterwards their feud came to a climax in court, where Wilde's homosexual double life was revealed to the Victorian public and he was eventually sentenced to imprisonment. His notoriety caused the play, despite its early success, to be closed after 86 performances. After his release, he published the play from exile in Paris, but he wrote no further comic or dramatic work. The Importance of Being Earnest has been revived many times since its premiere. It has been adapted for the cinema on three occasions. In The Importance of Being Earnest (1952), Dame Edith Evans reprised her celebrated interpretation of Lady Bracknell; The Importance of Being Earnest (1992) by Kurt Baker used an all-black cast; and Oliver Parker's The Importance of Being Earnest (2002) incorporated some of Wilde's original material cut during the preparation of the original stage production.

About the Author Oscar Wilde was born on October 16, 1854, to the Irish nationalist and writer Speranza Wilde and the doctor William Wilde. After graduating from Oxford in 1878, Wilde moved to London, where he became notorious for his sharp wit and flamboyant style of dress. Though he was publishing plays and poems throughout the 1880s, it wasn t until the late 1880s and early 1890s that his work started to be received positively. In 1895, Oscar Wilde was tried for homosexuality and was convicted and sentenced to two years in prison. Tragically, this downfall came at the height of his career, as his plays, An Ideal Husband "and The Importance of Being Earnest, "were playing to full houses in London. He was greatly weakened by the privations of prison life, and moved to Paris after his sentence. Wilde died in a hotel room, either of syphilis or complications from ear surgery, in Paris, on November 30, 1900.

The characters are all aristocratic British so full of folly I was rolling with laughter. They bungle everything with witty humor and sharp remarks. It is worth reading for the English alone, the language that is, not to knock the people though. I can't really sum it up without ruining the plot, but, think Shakespeare comedy. I can say no more.

While the school year has barely started we've already read The Power of One, Invisible Man, Fountianhead, Beowulf, Dubliners, that satire about eating children, and a couple poems. Of these, only the satire wasn't ridiculously serious and philosophical (well, it was still critical, but funny and weird in its own right). While I really enjoy the novels and stories we've read so far (except Fountainhead, which has become a sort of trigger word for me...just mention Howard Roark and I go off like a smoking gun) I don't think I've ever had so much fun reading a classic piece of literature.Honestly, AP English Aside and coming from an avid reader and 17 year old, this drama is HILARIOUS. I was practically dying of laughter during class hearing my classmates read the snarky, biting quips of 1895 british aristocrats lying and deceiving each other. The plot is absolutely hilarious, the characters all dreadful in the best ways, and the social critisism well executed and scathing in its farce-driven shell. And for those expecting a drawn out, boring play that only disappoints compared to the glorious promises of some Amazon reviewers...DON'T. The pacing of the play is very fast-paced and witty, moving from one scene to the next with an easy to follow but fast speed, and even to a modern audience it's sure to get a chuckle out of the most firm unbeliever. Reading through the first two acts, the whole class was cracking up laughing and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves thouroughly. It was a nice break between satires about eating babies and old English epics, that's for sure, and I'm definitely going to order my own copy, it was so good.So overall, 10/10 would read again.

By Tim Drain This is a great book by a great writer that was turned into a great movie (the one starring Michael Redgrave and directed by Sir Anthony Asquith, not the God-awful 2002 remake). This is British humor at it's finest with the movie featuring Margaret Rutherford, (later to be known for her portrayal of Miss Marple in the Agatha Christie movies), as the marvelous Miss Prism. The original 1952 movie has a great backstory. Oscar Wilde was a brilliant writer and playwright who had a scandulous reputation as a rather unrepentant homosexual in Victorian England. He was unceremoniously banished from England and forced to travel about Europe, all the while being recognized as one of Britain's finest writers. It was decided by the Centurian Group (one of England's most prestigious production companies) to showcase Wilde's talent by making "The Importance of Being Earnest" into a movie. They chose Sir Anthony Asquith to be the Director. In a great twist of irony, Sir Anthony's nephew was the fellow with whom Oscar was having the homosexual affair which had forced him into exile years earlier. When you read the book, do yourself a favor and get the 1952 version of the movie (also available through Amazon). The movie dialog is word-for-word the same as the book, and both are hilarious.
