A series of events cascade until one more event is too much, and it leads to a time when independence can no longer be sustained. This creates havoc for those thrust into the role of care-giver, and let’s face it, not everyone is suited to it.What’s the Deal with Caregiving? by Chris MacLellan is a guide to helping you get through it. He writes, “Often you have to give up things you love in order to care for the one you love.”Full disclosure: Chris is a friend of mine. I know him to be a man of great empathy and compassion, and I know his mission is to relieve suffering for others who find themselves in this situation. He writes from both a professional and a personal knowledge. Chris lightens the burden of care-taking by making lists of things to know and to do. For example, he lists “the activities of daily living” that help you decide when independence is no longer possible and that insurers will use to determine when additional services will be paid for.Chris encourages you to have a discussion with the “caree” about the most crucial questions as health worsens such as resuscitation, mechanical ventilation, feeding tubes and antibiotics. He lets you know that having the discussion is more vital than the list of questions so that when you become the decision-maker you will know what’s most important to your loved one.One of the most important parts of this book is Chris’s emphasis on creating a team. Chris suggests that you make a list of the caree’s needs and another of the resources available to meet those needs. For those who are not cut out to be involved in direct care, structuring and managing this list of needs and resources is as crucial as changing bedpans. Chris also points out the critical role of the medical companion, and instructs how to advocate for appropriate medical services.The burdens of care-giving are much greater than they were a century ago, and Chris also recognizes that the care-giver needs their own care-giver. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. HE HAS WALKED THE WALK By Sam C. Chris MacLellan has written a very useful and readable handbook for Caregivers everywhere. He has walked the walked, and it shows. I, too, have been a caregiver on more than one occasion, and can honestly say that it would have been very helpful to have had this delightful “how to” guide to caregiving to help me maintain my sanity. The book is logically laid out and the style is easy-going and comfortable. It is definitely not cumbersome. Thumbs up to Chris MacLellan! Give us more like this one…..

Wonderful Book for the Non-Professional Caregiver By IJ Woods When someone you love becomes sick with a terminal illness it’s shocking, scary and disorienting. If and when you become a caregiver for that person it can become terrifying. Why? Because, if you are like the millions of volunteer caregivers around the country, you now have responsibility for something you’re not trained for. Your actions can hurt your loved one physically. You can inadvertently hurt them emotionally and maybe even advance their death. This is almost akin to getting on a flight and as you enter the plane, the flight attendant tells you that you are going to fly everyone to the destination and that there’s plenty of literature in the cockpit to help you. That may sound overly dramatic, but as the primary caregiver for a loved one who was terminally ill, I certainly felt that way many times.Most of us who end up in the position of caregiving are not professionals. We do it out of love, but unless we’ve done it before we are walking into a big unknown - and it doesn’t take long to discover that loudly and clearly. Chris MacLellan’s book “What’s the Deal with Caregiving” is the place to start. This book is the result of several years being the primary caregiver for his partner, Richard who eventually succumbed to cancer in 2014. In that period of time Chris researched, learned and tried all he could to provide the best care his partner could have. We are fortunate to have a carefully constructed overview of his experience in the form of this book.During my time as a caregiver there were many sublime moments but there were also traumatic times that live with me to this day. And though it’s impossible to be prepared for every eventuality, “What’s the Deal” is a book I wish I had from the start. Although my wife was incredibly organized and made sure we took care of all the practicalities, neither of us were able to see the entire scope of what was in front of us as her life ebbed away. There was a ton of literature and information, but for me it was a jumble. I like this book because MacLellan distills the caregiver’s role down to the most essential components and also makes it readable and comprehensible.“What’s the Deal” is not a textbook on caregiving, nor is it a “caregiving for dummies”. This is part guide, part story based on being there and having to learn on the job. This book is filled with heart and is an obvious work of love. MacLellan’s insights and topics are well selected and come from his own discovery of what’s important – and they are! There’s no fat, and the writing is a joy to read on what can be complex and detailed subjects. Weighing in at around 100 pages someone can read this in one sitting and feel a greater sense of clarity about what they need to do.For instance, let’s just take just one topic - the understanding that the primary caregiver is an “advocate.” MacLellan learned that being a primary caregiver is not a passive thing, it is active, watchful, observant and communicative. He understood that he needed to be an advocate for his partner. As such he was the center point, the hub and protector. He understood that being an advocate doesn’t mean having all the expertise but involves working with and developing an expert team around him. If I had read just this one section alone my ability to caregive would have improved dramatically. And though that very thing may have been said to me in various ways, it was MacLellan’s words that brought the concept to life.“What’s the Deal” will give you a well-rounded picture of caregiving with enough detail and resources that will help you feel prepared and enable you to make your loved one feel they are in good hands. With the book's content as your base, the resources will show you how to augment your understanding and knowledge as you go along. Though “What’s the Deal” doesn’t try to be everything, but it's a book well worth having and keeping with you during your caregiving journey.
